Excellent location. If you're taking the bus from Tullamore, you'll get off just outside the hotel on Emmet Square. Once inside, you're likely to be greeted by a genuinely kind person who will show you to the breakfast area and give you sightseeing and restaurant suggestions. (In my case, that person was Anita.) I was traveling solo, and it really makes a difference to be greeted warmly. I stayed in a large room with a view of the square. I cannot say enough about the comfort of the bed or the cleanliness of the space. I also appreciated not needing an engineering degree to figure out the shower, which can happen in other places. My first night, I had dinner in the hotel restaurant and enjoyed a good curry, which I asked to be made extra spicy. It did not disappoint. The second night, I took Anita's suggestion to take a short walk to the County Arms Hotel and had a fabulous baked salmon with creamed potatoes. The staff in the breakfast area (Dooly's coffee shop) will take excellent care of you. It's a cliche to say "they'll treat you like family," but in my case, I felt like a guest in someone's home rather than a customer. The portions are generous and delicious, and I was surprised by the quality of the coffee. So good! (On both mornings, I noticed that locals come into the coffee shop off the street to eat in or to take out. That says something.)
The carpets in the corridors are worn, and the fixtures and decorations could be updated, but I had a wonderful experience otherwise. It didn't bother me.

Excellent breakfast(s). Very comfortable bed. Very kind, friendly & helpful staff. Excellent location for my visit.
As the building is reputed to be the oldest coaching inn in Ireland, (dating from 1743) it would be good to have more information about its’ history and relationship to the history of Birr, Birr Castle & political history. Did anyone famous stay there, etc.

I cannot compliment the staff enough during my stay. The housekeeping staff are phenomenal and the charming gentleman at breakfast was so welcoming. The breakfast was delicious, I ordered the veggie with coffee... Faultless. The bed was extremely comfy and the short time I was there (I was at a wedding) I had no enjoyable sleep.
The only negative thing I have to say is that the walls appear to be paper thin. The guests staying beside me woke me up and this was simply a phone call a woman was having. Although to be expected at a hotel that is central in the town you can also hear what's going on outside. I would definitely recommend earplugs, mine came in handy!

Lovely hotel set in the centre of Birr. Food in bar was nice and nice breakfast in the morning. Rooms were very spacious
Some of the windows in the hotel are old and it was a windy evening so there was a slight draft

Rowdy people outside at 2 am, but that is not the hotels fault :)
