Location and room, and breakfast. We have known this hotel for 20 years, but whilst room was clean and serviced daily, the general running of the hotel was pretty shambolic.

Menu was incredibly limited. We were served dishes that were not what we ordered. Half of the very limited menu of five items were not available. Other guests were told that the dinning room was fully booked, when in reality there were only 6 to 8 guests being served. Service was very slow, with almost an hour just to be served our starter. Staff really had no idea what they were doing! Very sad to see a superb hotel struggling under new management.

The Breakfast was very good ,plenty of choice .The Location is excellent, especially for walks , and as a lovely base for the Peak District. Our Bedroom 15 , was a King Room , and it was truly lovely .The grounds of the Hotel are in need of some serious attention ,as is some of the outside seating .

The Food we had for an Evening meal was not that great , always Prawn Cocktail that was Spicy And you couldn't taste the prawns. T he Steak and Ale pie , left a lot to be desired. Hardly any Steak , what there was were diced pieces, which were very small. Didn't bother with a sweet ,based on what the first two courses were like . My wife's Lasagne was dry and overcooked .

Breakfast was very good with good choice of food and well prepared meals. The dinners we had there (2) were also of high quality. The location was superb with climbable peaks on our doorstep.

The bed was not particularly comfortable but bearable. There was the unfortunate banging of a kitchen door. Our room was directly above the kitchen and at dinner times the constant banging of this door was noisy and reverberated and shook our room. We did report this to duty manager and he said he would look into it. He reported back to us but unfortunately it was not something that could be rectified before the end of our stay.

Beautiful location, wonderful staff, very accommodating and very comfortable and we got Engaged here so it will hold a special place in our hearts!

Hmm, well there wasn't really anything bad per se I will admit the food was a little steep but then it was also very delicious. I will say this though despite all the other wonderful things about it what made us feel most special was when the staff were really friendly and kind to us I should encourage the staff to continue to uphold this as their most important value going forward so they may continue to make their guests feel as special as they did for us

Fabulous location, beautiful and quiet. Room was quite spacious with comfortable bed and lovely views. Hotel was warm and cosy (we were there during Storm Pia). Dinner was excellent and staff attentive and very helpful.

The lighting in the dining room is bland. The dinner was excellent, but small lights or candles on the table would really enhance the dining experience.

We stayed with lower expectations based on previous reviews. I don't know if it's under new management but I found the staff welcoming, happy and incredibly helpful. The room was spacious, clean, well provided for and had the views had we hoped for. The breakfast was fantastic. I had a full English but there were other options. It was buffet style, so one could really load up for the day! The location is absolutely amazing, being only a ten minute walk from Dovedale stepping stones, the Dovedale to Milldale walk, Thorpe Cloud and a short walk to Ilam and it's National Trust property. Plus, it is quiet at night. As you have read above, I found it very difficult to square my experience with other reviews and wished that I had stayed another night instead of moving on to a different place that we had previously booked.

I guess the mattress was hard for me. However, bed and mattress comfort is down to very personal taste. Some will consider that the décor is rather old fashioned and some investment here might be beneficial. Nonetheless, this also gives it a certain "time gone by" charm as well. We didn't use the restaurant. So, can't comment on the evening meal experience.

We had been before and knew how good the location is for Dovedale, Ilam, The Manifold Trail, etc. Our room was large and with great views. The staff were friendly and helpful.

The hotel has clearly had some work done in the communal areas. However, the bedrooms are tired, though clean. A larger TV would be a welcome improvement. The staffing levels seem low for the size of the hotel, which was evidenced by the receptionist doubling as barman and by the limited choices available at the evening meal.

We were met by Chris ( the manager), and we mentioned to him that we first stayed at the Izzak Walton Hotel in 1993 and this was an anniversary trip to celebrate this. Chris could not do enough to make our stay very special. We have to say the whole team were exceptional in how they looked after us during our stay here. Also a special mention to Salim who looked after us during breakfast 👍👏. The hotel is in a perfect location for some beautiful walks and a great place to get away for some quiet time. Location was absolutely perfect for Dovedale & Ilam, views from room amazing. Breakfast could have been better, one flask of hot water for tea for guests to use, teapots would have been a much better choice, filter coffee only, maybe invest in a coffee machine ? Basic cereal, ok but offer of some either dried fruit or fresh fruits to accompany. Cooked breakfast in heated pans, nothing wrong with that but fried eggs not so great at sitting!! Just a few basic things in the hotel to make it an overall good experience. Tea tray in room, not replenished daily, asked for milk on reception, no cartons so a jug of fresh milk given but where do you store it as no fridge in room. As I said, a few minor changes needed and it’s a beautiful place overall

Very friendly and helpful staff . Comfortable room and wonderful location The food was especially good.

There seemed to be a problem with the shower hot water on one occasion. We reported this and hope it will be resolved for whoever stays in the room next.
