I liked the one night stay as a single traveller in a dorm at an unbelievably low cost in a really nice location. The YHA is very relaxing and the facilities are really good too. The self catering kitchen has everything you need providing you bring your own consumables and you can make yourself anything from just a cup of tea right up to a proper meal, alternatively there's a really good restaurant for breakfast or evening meal.

As usual the internet signal isn't great and no TV but okay I suppose if you want to escape for a short stay. I'm not too keen on double decker bunk beds in the dorms, fortunately mine was less than half full so okay on this occasion.

Amazing place and location! Very remote if you are not driving. Have to get the dial a bus from Ashbourne. (Theres 2, moorland connect is one of them and has an app.) Beautiful place with its own grounds, stunning. Great value breakfast, seemed pricey at first but i was constantly offered more and they are constantly cooking fresh bacon ect. Staff really helpful and nice.

The prices of the food and drink if you are staying in the dorm to be economical then this is not cost effective. Especially the drink £4.50 for a bottle of lager, Ouch! And theres no consuming your own inside. However I did see people drinking outside on the beautiful gardens which really are amazing, so i don't suppose its really a problem. If i went again i would cook my own meals and have their breakfast.

Wendy and Lesley are just brilliant. We had a brilliant stay and felt like a home from home. The food was very decent and cooked to order. They went the extra mile with our youngest and made them feel so at home that they keep asking when we can go again! It was a great break. The room was brilliant. Warm and comfortable and the lights being slightly less bright than other yha ones on the beds was nice too. I'm just super thankful for a brilliant break and how well looked after we were. Thanks to Wendy and Lesley in particular for your kindness and for liking our daughters' painting so much you shared it on social media 😀 😊

It's a yha so it's gonna be simple quality safe accommodation. We like that but if you want more frills then this isn't the place for you. We found it a smidge tricky to find the room at first, but we were tired on arrival so that may have been the main factor!

The room was clean and comfy, and the sink a nice addition. The games room was nice with places to sit, get a drink and play games. Parking was nearby and only £2 overnight as discounted for guests. The place was gorgeous outside and for the price we got exactly what we needed for a one night stay. It's also close to Alton Towers which was our destination and the people were lovely.

This was our first time with a shared bathroom and we weren't a fan (but that's on us). They were clean but one toilet felt like it was falling off the wall.

ive never stayed in a hostel before and for the price i paid i was abit sceptical but I had no reason to be as i absolutely loved it here, the location was what made me book as it is absolutely beautiful with stunning scenery and i definitely wasnt let down, the staff are amazing very friendly and welcoming, the breakfast is well worth the price and so tasty, the room (I had a private family room) was perfect, loved the shower and the space. the self catering kitchen is brilliant and saved us from eating out. will definitely be returning 100%

there wasn't anything I was pleased with everything

Myself, sister, son and niece arrived late in the evening but didn't stop us going for an adventure with our phone torches. What a stunning building on stunning grounds. The gent in reception couldn't do enough to help us, he was brilliant. We enjoyed getting back having a coffee and playing Jenga in the games room. We loved that we had our own plug and light above our bunk beds.

Wasn't so much didn't like, but the pillows where really flat and bed a bit uncomfortable but would still 100% come back, I'd just be sure to bring my own pillow and a mattress topper :) for the price of the stay I'd have slept on the floor.

Great staff, amazing location, superb building, accessible and friendly. Food is good and has accessible prices. We had a great stay!

Our double room was okay — very basic, even by hostel standards. Large flakes of paint were peeling from the low ceiling right above the bed, which gave the room a neglected feel. It clearly needs a serious refresh. Overall, not the best value for money, especially given the relatively high price of the room (it was the last available option)

He staff were really lovely, and made us feel really welcome, helping also with ideas of walks. The grounds and building itself are just breathtaking. We walked along to Hinkley Hollow. Food was fab, catered for myself well (coeliac). And it was just amazing to be in the middle of all this beauty. My boys loved the ping pong and the choice of board games.

The bedaide lights didnt work. And the menu showed the pepperobi pizza as being £10.95 however we were charged £10.95 and the a + £2 for pepperoni, which made no sense as the margherita was £9.95. It all goes into the place but incase someone was on a tight budget worth checking.

Having visited ILam when I was 10 years old it was wonderful to return to the happy memories I've held dear for many years ( I'm now 49 ) Met up with a dear friend and enjoyed a trip to Ashbourne followed by a relaxing evening sitting in the grounds of Ilam Hall drinking wine and catching up. The food was lovely. Simple but filling and tasty. Staff were amazing and the other guests were of all ages with a lovely friendly but not invasive feel. For some I can imagine it would be rather basic but when you consider the beautiful surroundings and the fact that you are staying in a historical building in a stunning part of the country for very little money it makes the whole experience unique and affordable. One I will repeat again and again. I highly recommend a visitor.

I loved everything about this place. I honestly can't fault it.

Extremely good location to the Thorpe Cloud hill. 40 minutes to reach it and it is a 150m climb. Mobile phone coverage is almost inexistant, so you feel in a different land and time, also due to the magnificent architecture. Also chances of having real life 1.0 conversations with fellow guests increase therefore. The mostly quite young personnel was so polite and service oriented, that you felt more welcome than in a luxury hotel.

I did not care but for many older guests a room in the Gatehouse tower would be difficult because of the 50 steps to your room.
