Alan was incredibly friendly at check in, giving us a lovely welcome as he showed us to our room. He told us a bit about the history of the hotel as well as provided an informational pamphlet with things to do nearby! Rooms were perfectly clean and the beds were very comfortable. They even have Netflix available on their TVs! My partner and I took the 3 minute walk to the beach that Alan mentioned, and we loved it. You can hear the waves from your hotel room, so the location is great! We didn't use the minibar in the room, but the rooms do come stocked with wine, champaign, some beers, and snacks.

The only minor criticism I have for this wonderful hotel is the rooms are pretty hot after being in the sun all day. They do provide standing, oscillating fans and the massive sliding glass doors allow a nice ocean breeze in. We may have missed the AC unit but we couldn't find one, and opening the windows did let some bugs in unfortunately.

Owner Alan and Olivia were so welcoming. You felt like you were a local not a tourist. With the local knowledge shared, we were able to travel to Great locations in the short time frame of 2 days we had. The room was so clean and bed comfortable. We had a self contained unit. Location was quiet, but close enough to town should you need supplies. A short walk to the beach. Paroa had a Restaurant, Bar and bottle shop on site. Fabulous, Friendly Staff and Great Menu. Highly Recommend.

We could not stay longer!!!

Great accessible 1 brm unit with parking outside the door. Genuine wheelchair accessible unit, which was good to see. Parking right outside, ramp access with hand rails, large lounge kitchen area, with a bench cut out for wheelchairs, full wheelchair access bathroom, really comfortable bed. Good sized table and chairs, smoking area on the deck just outside the room. People in wheelchairs can book with confidence in this unit (Room 7). Excellent restaurant on site for both dinner and breakfast, with room service available. Really friendly owner, staff and locals. Great location, just south of Greymouth, right by the Shantytown turnoff, half an hour to Hokitika and an hour to Westport.

All great

We approached the Paroa Hotel with low expectations (Greymouth is a bit of a hotel desert), but from the moment of our arrival and warm welcome by the owner, everything was transformed. A hotel business that has been in the same family for 3 generations is clearly doing things right in every department, and they still have a firm hold on quality and service. Our room was immaculate, well designed and appointed, and extremely comfortable. It was only 350 metres from the beach, which was a huge bonus with an easy walk to enjoy the views. We enjoyed an excellent supper in the hotel's restaurant from its extensive menu. In the morning we had a heroic breakfast before heading out to view sights recommended by the owner, Bernie. Overall, the greatest strength of the Paroa is its people, owners and employees alike, who were incredibly warm, welcoming and helpful.

The weather! During breakfast the wind exceeded 50 mph with driving rain and salt spray - very Westland.

I always say stay at family owned hotel/motels in New Zealand and this place proved my point even further. It was modern, clean, great location, friendly people and honestly one of the best places I've stayed in on my trip so far. It had smart TVs, good wi-fi, onsite restaurant with good variety, the rooms just felt like a homestay and I loved everything about this place. If I'm ever on the West again this is the only place I'll stay at. Also the handy tips for things to explore when I checked it was also great. The simple things like a handshake - just sealed the deal for me for how down to earth this place was. Just want to say a huge thanks for investing in such a high quality accommodation. Way better than any of the international accommodations by far. 5/5!

We had the 3 bedroom unit which is called the bungalow. It's actually a house on its own separate to the hotel accommodation. It's an older building but had some newer facilities like a great sized spa bath. It had all the kitchen facilities we needed and there's a little corner store shop between it and the hotel if you need a few supplies. Over all a comfortable stay. Happy to recommend.

The house is located right on the main road so naturally there is some road noise.

Friendly staff, clean, comfortable and spacious property. Well located on the beach and super convenient for visiting family. Great beach for sunsets. Did really appreciate having 2 decent size queens for sleeping ( in 2 different rooms).

We had the room closest to the road this time. Previously had one of the newer rooms facing the beach/grass/sunset etc set further back. It was fine but the outlook to the building over the fence from the outdoor seating area wouldn’t be my first choice. Minor on the scheme of things. Wouldn’t stop us returning to the property. Just to be aware that check in can take place inside at the bar/restaurant or even at the drive through liquor counter.

Very modern, clean, tidy, spotless setup and facilities. Comfy bed! Super friendly and nice staff. Nice bar within the hotel. Good location. Good value for money! We as a family had good time there. Will 100% stay again if I go to Westcoast. Recommend to other travelers.

The room I stayed is west facing and extremely warm and we had to open the door and window to get cool air in. And we cannot really sleep well. I hope it would have air conditioner for summer.

The bar and restaurant are excellent, recently renovated, very clean and comfortable. The room was much nicer and larger than I expected, clean, comfortable and well equipped. Good value for the price. The location is great, just a short distance south of Greymouth, 2 mins walk to the beach. Convenient for the TranzAlpine train (if you have transport).

The room was stiflingly hot when we arrived and it took a hour after dark with the doors open and lights off (to stop bugs being attracted by the light) to cool the room down. It has been a very hot summer so far and the room has no AC. However, I give them a pass for this as the West Coast is not usually somewhere that AC is required. There's probably only a few days a year when it would be this hot! The shower box was very small, though the shower head itself was great.

The Paroa was ideal after a day travelling over Arthur's Pass. Hokitika is lovely but this ticked all the boxes of convenience for us. As a late booking we were in a disability access room but it was fine. The shower was good, there was sufficient room for cases and a separate seating area. The restaurant was very good - especially the renowned whitebait. A very good one night stay.

The roadworks that set off at 5 in the morning but that was hardly the hotel's fault! A few more little touches to give it more charm wouldn't go amiss but it's good value for money and I recommend it.
