Wonderful historic building in outstanding location. Beautiful views from the property.. The bar area and terraces with lovely views were a real bonus. The staff, especially the bar staff and the lady who managed breakfast ,were professional and friendly.

The room allocated was not really suitable. It was on the second floor and was a difficult climb for elderly legs. To be fair, we had booked last minute and were unable to transfer to another room. Next time will book well on advance to secure more comfortable room.

It's a stunning historic house with beautiful plasterwork and great views across the town and fields. I was lucky enough to get room 5 which, along with 1, has the best views. Big comfy bed, comfy armchair, windowseats and a huge, sunny bathroom.

A better coffee machine at breakfast would have made all the difference. The milky coffee options were grey and tasteless so I just drank espressos. Also the lovely bar terrace is not so lovely when you're sleeping above it and it's a warm night but at least that falls quiet around ten.

The staff were excellent, couldn't do enough for me. The room didn't have a hairdryer but the lady at breakfast sorted it quickly. The room was a good temperature (I normally find hotels too warm). I had a really good evening meal with a colleague who lived locally. I ordered a breakfast bag to go as I had to leave early and that was very good.

My only difficulty was finding the car park as the signage is behind you as you drive up a steep drive with a hairpin bend, it wasn't very clear and arriving in the dark I had to park on the hill and get out to find my bearings.

Our room was fantastic with 4 windows (some with window seats), good views, a giant bed and a giant bathroom. It was all really clean and comfortable. The in-house gin distillery was a good bonus and we enjoyed the tasting.

We had booked a table for dinner on the Saturday night, but the atmosphere in the dining room was dreadful - the dining room had become a spillover from the bar, so people (lots of young locals) were pulling chairs around dining tables, drinking pints and being really rowdy. It was not pleasant to eat there, even though the food was lovely. In fact, the dining room atmosphere ruined the experience

An elegant and characterful building. Its clearly going through a period of refurbishlment so parts of the building look a bit tired but look beyond that and you'll see beautiful period detailing in the bedrooms and shared spaces making it so much more interesting than some of the bland, modern chain hotels. The owners should be applauded for investing in retaining those features. My bedroom was much larger than average (though I know some are smaller) and with a large, modernised bathroom. The terrace accessed from the bar provided superb views of the surrounding countryside. The staff were welcoming, polite and friendly - mostly younger folk who took pride in their job which was refreshing.

More relaxed seating and subdued lighting in the inside bar would make it feel more welcoming

Very spacious new rooms, amazing bathroom. Large TV, tea and coffee with kettle in the room. Hairdryer provided. Very friendly staff. Plenty of toilets available. Lovely outside seating areas. Breakfast was good and plenty to choose from. Bathroom needed some hooks for your clothes. Hard to know how to turn off the towel heater. Larger mirror would have been preferred in the bedroom for when drying hair. New rooms in the basement had no signage at all. No family rooms so had to book 2 rooms.

The building is a large mansion-type old house with rooms downstairs for dog-owners. It's certainly got a lot of character... and is obviously tired in some aspects, like the carpet... but the staff, the cleanliness and the breakfast service all make up for any disappoinment.

No room facilities for dog - even though we paid £20 cash for her to stay. No water bowl, no welcome treat, no dog bed like we had in another hotel over the previous 2 nights.

Lovely hotel and friendly helpful staff. Slowly being returned to its former glory. Depending on which room, there are fantastic views over the town and surrounding countryside. Gorgeous plaster friezework around dining room (particularly the small part.of the room) unfortunately in need of some renovation, but good to see the character of the building retained.

Previous years of neglect have made their mark, and will take time and money to rectify. Rooms are very warm, although windows can be opened a small way. Some carpets could do with a good clean. Grounds and gardens could be improved, but secondary to restoring the building.

Beautiful bedroom with ensuite. Thoughtfully decorated. VERY comfortable bed and luxurious "shabby-chic" in a very good way. Genuinely lovely. Exceptionally helpful, friendly, welcoming staff, who went out of their way to offer a great stay. In hot weather, a problem because the windows don't open very far (just inches due to "Health & Safety gone mad" authorities), but this is not the fault of the hotel and they provided a fan, which did the job. Lovely landing and staircase with chandeliers. If we had stayed longer, which we could happily have done if time had allowed, it would have been nice to sit out on the terrace with a coffee. We could see the castle ruins from the window, and there was ample parking space. The nicest hotel we've been in for some time. Highly rcommended if you would like somewhere very friendly and relaxed, with the scent of the sea in the air from not far away.

As in my part of the review, above, authorities disallow the big windows to open very much (not the fault of the hotel). If you are staying in hot weather, check that the hotel have a fan for the room. They quickly provided us with one, which was really great service.

Great location, helpful team, easy walk through the castle grounds or streets into the town centre, excellent value including a really nice breakfast, comfortable room and parking outside was no problem.

The curtains in our room did not actually close which was odd, the main bar is good but very noisy, and our room was near the road and laundry room so quite a lot of noise. While breakfast was very good, it took around 30 minutes to arrive.
