On arrival in Cumbria from Sussex, my two daughters and I arrived at our original accommodation to find that it had been double-booked. Tired and stressed and already late in the evening, we made a new reservation with Calder House Hotel. We were given such a warm welcome, as well as a beautiful family room, which was very clean, very well equipped and very comfortable. Calder House Hotel's owner Elaine and her staff were incredibly friendly, kind and helpful and gave us a wonderful stay! They even suggested putting a mini fridge in our room so that after we returned from climbing Scalfell Pike (our reason for going to Cumbria), our food would be fresh. We accepted this very kind offer. Calder House Hotel has got a rich history - it used to be a school for girls - and is situated right on the beach. The breakfast/dining room has views out onto the fabulous beer garden and the beach, which is accessed via a gate at the bottom of the garden. In all, thanks to Elaine and her staff, we ended up having a wonderful stay and a stress-free climb up Scalfell Pike's Corridor Route! We will be paying a return visit!

This was a little 3 night break so we could do some hiking over the Easter bank holliday. Calder house was absolutely stunning and full of breathtaking history. This place has a snooker table!!! What an absolute magical place and town. Access to the beach through the rear of property where amazing memories were made. The staff and owners are undoubtedly the friendliest I have ever met. The food was just so tasty and fresh. The atmosphere in the bar where locals and guests just chat and have fun.. bring a dog BRING 10 this place makes everything happen. I can't speak highly enough. You have to see to believe.

Having to leave.

The location was lovely, overlooking the beach, just a couple of minutes walk. The area was clean also. Ample car parking. There is a good size bar and seating area for socialising or small quiet private areas if you need it. You can have your food in the bar area, the restaurant or on the patio or beer garden. There is a full size snooker table in its own designated room with a tv. We had a lovely sea view room, quite large and spacious. Very clean, the linen and towels smelt fresh. Comfortable double bed. Plenty of room for luggage in a large built in wardrode, with an Iron/Ironing board, hair dryer, coat hangers etc and a fan heater (not that you will need to use that!) Large flat TV with a good signal Free WiFi also with a good signal Good size bathroom with a large walk in shower that worked great and clean Plenty of tea & coffee in the room with a good size kettle Lovely and quiet Large lawned area/beer garden The freindly staff couldn't do enough for you. We asked for a couple of special requests and were catered for straight away. You could easily see that a lot of hard work, love and affection is put in by the staff to make your stay memorable.

We couldn't find anything not to like.

We had such a lovely stay at this hotel! From the moment we arrived the staff were brilliant, so friendly and informative about the surrounding areas. Originally we planned to stay one night but we ended up staying two nights! It’s also extremely dog friendly. The rooms were so clean, cosy and had everything you needed for your stay. The garden is just beautiful with amazing views of the stunning beach which is a 2 minute walk from the hotel. Breakfast was also lovely, it was nice to help yourself to the tea and coffee facilities and enjoy a nice cuppa in the garden in the morning! Highly recommend this hidden gem to anyone, also a recommend visiting the stunning lake wastwater which is a 20 minute drive away! Thank you to all the staff for your friendly welcome and a great stay!

We stayed in Seascale for an Ultramarathon so didn't have a lot of time to explore the area. However, the beach at Seascale is lovely and sandy and stretches for miles! There is also a fabulous Ice Cream parlour at the main car park on the beach. The Calder Hotel was charming. Clearly lovingly restored and run. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, the hotel had a very homely feel to it. The breakfast was delicious. We ate in the restaurant one evening, the food was incredible, all home made. Service was excellent and prompt. It was busy so there was a wait for the food, but this was explained to us and it was definitely worth the wait. The room was comfortable with plenty of space and the shower was really good, hot and powerful. Our room looked over the beach, which was lovely to see in the morning. Secure parking was also available.

There was nothing to not like!

Room very good. Everything in the room was spotlessly clean. Lovely soft towels. Great views over the coast. Food both at breakfast and in the evenings was excellent and reasonably priced. Staff across all areas were friendly and helpful.

The hotel side of the building was excellent but the bar didn't fit with the overall feel of the hotel. Whilst there had been an effort to make the bar area comfortable, it was somewhat spoiled by each area having a TV which was playing. I realise that they are trying to attract locals into the bar area but as residents in the hotel there was no dedicated area in which to relax with a drink.

Lovely sea view and sunset view from room 7. Breakfast top notch. Evening meal also very good. Bar is fantastic and beer garden, drinks reasonably priced. Room: fine, just a few finer details need attention. Bed comfy, shower great.

The area of seascale literally has nothing there apart from a beautiful beach to watch the sun set . There's nowhere else to go or to eat nearby (walking distance). One co-op, 3 takeaways. Seemed like the Calder house is the main attraction in the town. I chose it as a base for the lake District but it's an hour's drive from Keswick. Ravenglass is close and has a nice miniature train ride.

All the staff were friendly and helpful. We had a meal out in the garden overlooking the beach on the evening we arrived and it was beautiful. The food and the view. Cajun chicken starter was well presented and tasty with a lovely creamy whipped do and salad. Pork belly starter was eaten so quickly I didn't need to ask if it was nice! The hunters chicken included plenty of BBQ sauce and cheese, a very well crisped thick piece of bacon (no fatty bits floating around) and the thickest home made chips and some lovely fresh salad. Perfect. Scampi was beautifully cooked and again came with fresh salad and home made chips. Great to sit out and enjoy our food with the sound of the sea after a long drive. Our room had a lovely bay window with wifey opening windows to let in a great breeze when needed. 2 comfy chairs to sit and read and just look out to sea (right across to the Isle of Man at the right time of day!). The bed was firm which was great for my bad back. All clean and lovely warm duvet with a thin throw if you preferred a lighter cover. The wardrobe and drawers are old and in need of a bit of love really but are large and hold plenty of stuff so you can keep the room tidy. The lamps bedside the bed fitted in well though only one worked and I forget to mention that to the staff to be honest. I'm sure they would've popped a new bulb in if I had! There's a little heater in the wardrobe in case it gets cold and an iron and full ironing board. A hairdryer in the drawer (worked very well) and the little kettle on the side with coffee and tea was a welcoming addition after a walk on the beach. The bath was so deep I needed help getting it after a nice long soak! I did have to wait for my bath as there was no hot water during the day so I waited till around 5pm and managed to half fill it (more than enough with his deep it is!).

I have mobility problems and there are stairs everywhere here. Up to the rooms, down to the bar... Though I reduced this by going outside and walking down the car park slope to get to the garden! The stairs are not deep and there is a good bannister rail, but it may be difficult for some to access everywhere properly.

The position right on the sea front - and especially the view of the sea & sky from the bedroom - was amazing. Staff really friendly. Decent homely food, with good cooked breakfast options. Snooker room & pool table were a great addition, which we would have definitely made more use of if we’d had time. Nice bright decor in room.

Could’ve done with some hooks in the en-suite, as there was nowhere to hang things. Bathroom was a little old/tired feeling in general. Bed was very obviously two twins pushed together - comfy beds, but would’ve benefitted from a mattress topper or something to cover the join as that part was quite uncomfortable. Could’ve done with some water glasses in the room.
