Let’s start with, I had literally no idea what I was getting us into. As we drove from Durban we turned off the main highway and just kept going. The roads got smaller, fewer markings, farm land, small villages/towns and then a turn off with a one-lane-ish road, bridges across streams that said “don’t cross if the water covers the bridge”. But when we arrived we realized what a special place this was. First off, family owned and run, currently being managed by the three daughters of the founders and I loved that they are all very engaged and on the property with guests every day. The property is set up with individual thatched house cottages and a main lodge. Each cottage has its own private patio with a view of the Drakensbergs and especially the Amphitheater mountain formation. We had also signed up for half board and boy am I glad we did that because the closest town was 30km away and didn’t have much to choose from. There is an option for a la Carte lunch and dinner too. But it keeps getting better. The property has amazing hikes, 18 horses, a couple of ponds, swimming pool, spa, tennis court and a dining room that offered us bespoke menus each. For David “Lactose Free Vegan” and for Ilene, “Lactose Free, Vegan & Gluten Free”. Dinner’s was multiple courses, and all delicious and beautifully displayed.

Montusi is very well-looked after and everything is quite pristine! Much care is invested in both property, and guests. Our garden suite was spacious, we lacked for nothing, and we had more than enough privacy from our neighbours. Many thoughtful touches in the rooms such as umbrella's, filter coffee, pool baskets, flowers. The linen was great and the rooms were perfectly clean and fresh. We used Montusi as a place to rest, and it was the ideal place for unwinding. The pool area is really beautiful. And the food and service was pretty perfect too. I used the Spa a few times, and although the spa menu is quite simple, the treatments were first-class! A great place to stay!

We had a cottage with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a living room which was very spacious and clean and had a great view on the amphitheatre. Design was nice, but nothing special. Food was very good and staff very friendly. The location is a great place for hiking tours, since you only have to drive a few kilometres to the National Park where you can make amazing hiking tours. The lodge offers a kind of flyer with detailed description of several hiking tours which was extremly helpful, since sometimes there was no internet connection on our tours.

Due to the number of cottages and the possibility to drive directly to your cottage we felt like being in a holiday park and not in a lodge. This is what we did not like that much.... but that's all.

Everything. It was lovely. There was a once-in-a-generation snowfall which caused chaos but the staff were absolutely incredible in dealing with it and looking after everyone. The food was exceptional. The rooms are big and comfortable and the shower is great. The views are magnificent. There are lots of hiking options as well as guided hikes and trail runs. Horse riding too! Such a beautiful place. The bathroom even has underfloor heating :) Also - good coffee provided in the rooms. Highly recommend Montusi.

The other floors are a little cold when it’s cold outside so would recommend some thick socks if you’re going in winter.

Exceptionally clean and tidy. Was not inconvenienced during a power outage in the area due to great planning by the hosts. Very friendly and helpful staff. Secure environment. Great trails on site. Beautiful views of the amphitheatre. Peaceful environment. Great meal selection, flavours and presentation. Best ice cream served at dinner (made in-house). Welcome drinks and biscuits were a nice touch. Iron and ironing board was provided on request. Will definitely stay at Montusi when we're in the area again.

Nothing, everything was amazing!

Montusi Lodge will always be among the most special places we have ever visited. The grounds are gorgeous and location stunning - remote, with birdsong, epic views towards the Drakensberg amphitheatre and spectacular skies. The food is superb with a daily changing menu and we looked forward to 4 course dinners each evening (and the wine list!). We stayed 5 nights and hiked every day. Before we got there, Dumisani was super helpful with pre-organising transfers to the Royal Natal National Park (about 25km) which has fabulous hiking. Shorter self-guided trails can also be done on the Montusi estate, right from the lodge. A really impressive operation for such a remote location and hosts Lindsey & Mick and their lovely team are to be congratulated. Thanks for making us so welcome and accommodating our thirst for the great outdoors!

This is a beautiful lodge in a stunning location, the views are spectacular. We had a lovely individual cottage with parking outside our door, they had thought about every you need in the room. The meals were excellent and my husband still talks about the best steak he has ever eaten. Everything was very high quality.

The pool area was lovely with lots of comfy beds and sunshades but there were a lots of children in the pool making a lot of noise and even though there were notices saying there had to be an adult with them there was no adult to be seen! It would have been nice to have an adult only quiet area.

The Montusi Mountain Lodge is really beautiful. The lodge is beautifully located and elegantly designed. We enjoyed the scenic view so much. The bungalows are well maintained. It was really cozy in there. The staff is very friendly. Breakfast & dinner was the best we have had in ZA so far. We wish, we could have stayed longer!

The mattress was not comfortable (too hard)

The breakfast was great and the accomodation was so comfortable and spacious we loved being there and the views from the room were stunning every minute there was great and the staff and owners of the property were so accomodating and just all in all a wonderful experience we will be back for sure. Best fillet we have ever eaten as well!

I found my bed a bit hard but my husband said it was great so think I am used to a too soft mattress :)

The property is situated in the most amazing grounds with spectacular views of the mountains. Grounds were immaculate and the lodge exceptionally clean. The evening meal was excellent and there was a great variety of food at breakfast too. Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Loved the walks on the property grounds too.
