Great hotel with a great location. Nice food with the restaurant area overlooking the sea - excellent

Nothing major but the breakfast annoyed me - choice of 1 drink so if you had tea, no orange juice was offered unless of course you paid extra. I also did not like a better / wider choice of breakfast for walk in / paying people rather than the included ones. We were paying nearly £200 per night remember. Also, not impressed with no housekeeping offered for a three night stay - part of the experience of staying in a hotel for me.

Fabulous location, pretty decor, good food and lovely, friendly staff. I would stay again purely on the basis of the staff.

Room was small and very hot. They provided a portable air con unit but it was too loud to sleep with and the hose isn’t fitted properly so it would only work if wedged up against the radiator. I felt it was expensive for what you got (small room and bed, no cleaning during the stay unless requested and breakfast extra) but we did visit in high season so that’s probably why.

location excellent given it is a village next to the sea with narrow streets Staff friendly and efficient and beds were very comfortable: the well-equiped room room provided fresh milk for tea, a lot better that many so-called 4 star hotels. Our meal was good and my steak, considered by all the best choice, was excellent. The treacle tart could have had more treacle but I would not damn them for that! Parking was very close and convenient for our one night stay. The picture is the view from our bedroom balcony at sunrise.

Our only complaint was that we were guests we thought in a pub with rooms but we could not order drinks after about 9 20 approx. They had cashed up for the night even though as guests they could have added to drinks to the room charge. The technology apparently did not permit. Hence our stay was very good but not perfect but we would stay again and repair to the nearest pub after 9 30 (As we did)!

We loved the location and all the staff were very friendly and professional. The junior suite was very comfortable and clean with the additional bonus of having a fridge.

We had been trying to book the Royal George because we wanted to try the 2 rosette restaurant but for various reasons dates had to be rearranged. We were delighted that we finally secured a booking which coincided with a birthday. We are both in hospitality and were surprised how limited the menu was and we wondered whether the chef had moved on. We did not consider the food to be of 2 rosette quality. An example being a pork t bone chop was served with overcooked chips and charred cabbage the cost being £24.00. There were no check backs. We did mention our issue when the plates were cleared.

Recommended and featured in the Good Pub Guide and an article in The i newspaper featuring "30 great waterside pubs across Britain" brought us here. Appledore is a delightful village on the river. The Royal George is a beautiful pub in an excellent location with spacious, clean and comfortable rooms. We had a terrace in room 1. The crew are welcoming and friendly. We enjoyed an excellent evening meal and breakfast, all perfectly cooked with quality ingredients. A doggy friendly pub and restaurant. Short walk into the village centre for a further range of wonderful pubs, cafés, restaurants and independent shops. Would we return? Yes. TripAdvisor Torbayaotearoa

Nothing to dislike

This is a small, lovely old family owned hotel set on the edge of the Bristol Channel, in a very quaint street in a very quaint village. Coming from South Africa, it is exactly what I pictured a small English seaside village would be like! The breakfasts were wonderful, freshly cooked and reasonable, and served sitting right next to the sea. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed for dinners, but there is a very pleasant pub a 50m walk away, that served great food and also had live music.

Parking was tricky initially, but there is a long stay car park nearby and also street parking in the village a short walk away that was available. That might be a problem in busy seasons, check with the hotel before arriving.

This was our second stay in the same room as we loved it so much and it did not disappoint. Gorgeous comfortable room with amazing views. Lovely clean bathroom with the added bonus of a free-standing bathtub. Fridge with water and fresh milk. Friendly welcoming staff who let us check in early as our room was ready which was a huge bonus. Great nights sleep and wonderful cooked breakfast in the morning.

My only gripe in what was an exceptional stay is that the check out time of 10am is a little too early for a Sunday if you are eating breakfast in the restaurant. We found we had to get up and out by 9:15am.. An option of an 11 o'clock check out time (would gladly pay extra) so guests could have breakfast then pack and check out would be much more relaxing. Just an idea.

The bar/ restaurant is set lovely over looking the estuary. Our room was lovely. Very clean and spacious! Very friendly staff!

It’s not that we didn’t like anything about the property. I just felt staying over a bank holiday weekend, I would have thought they may have stayed open on the Sunday evening. I do appreciate that they close Sunday nights but as it was a bank holiday weekend, we found it very strange to arrive and gratefully be able to grab a couple of drinks but then it all shut down. I did find this odd not to stay open as an exception.

This is our second christmas stay at this hotel. We absolutely love the location, the staff (especially the lovely waitress) and the breakfast. The styling of the rooms is really nice; we stayed in two different rooms, the family for two nights and a premium double for one night. The double room was so much nicer than the suite with two rooms.

There is very little storage in the family suite; the only wardrobe space in the main bedroom was taken up with items that should have been put somewhere else. The only shelf in the wardrobe was filled with bedspreads etc and the bottom was filled with portable air conditioners etc. All of these items should have been stored somewhere else. There is one hanging space and one small chest of drawers between two rooms; so they should be empty for guests. Radiator in bathroom stuck on full and it was boiling hot - this was the same two years ago so needs fixing. Our room on night 3 was perfect.

Booked here to be on the waters edge. It is an art form getting down the narrow street and best to offload and park away as there is literally nowhere by. This was not a problem as it was not busy time of year. The room was spacious and thoughtfully decorated in a modern style with strong rustic echoes. We had all we needed for a comfortable stay. Our window was by a street light and the blinds are a light fabric, not a big issue. Nicky, especially was engaging and helpful. We dined overlooking the turning of the tide and breakfasted with its repeat as the estuary life was fascinating. Enjoyed the fact there were nearly as many polite dogs under tables as there were patrons- gotta love England
