Nicely decorated rooms with well thought out furniture and plenty of space for our belongings. The hotel had charm and plenty of rooms downstairs to join in the fun or retire with a book to a quiet corner. Good restaurant for dinner or lunch.
We’d asked for a quiet room but our room faced onto the Main Street near a nightclub and rowdy revellers were around till 4 in the morning. It was the same for Friday and Saturday. Whilst I appreciate staff thought it was noisier at the back it clearly wasn’t as my son’s room was at the back and he had no noise apart from a generator. We therefore slept badly both nights which was such a shame as we were there for a lovely family wedding but we had to leave early as we were so tired. Everything else was spot on and the staff couldn’t do enough for us.

The location was fantastic, in the town centre of Barnstaple with easy access to everywhere essentially due to Barnstaple being within a 10-15 minutes drive of most places you might wish to visit in this area of North Devon. The staff stood out to us, extremely friendly and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble. We managed to break a glass in the bathroom within 20 minutes of check-in, and it was cleaned up very quickly. We ate in the restaurant, the food wasn't quite to our taste but you can't absolutely love everywhere you eat, it's very much personal preference. The restaurant itself was a really nice environment and vibe, and again the staff were fantastic. The Bartender Ian we became friendly with, and he shared with us some of his clarified cocktails which were not only impressive, but delicious. In fact our experience with Ian over the 3 nights we stayed made the stay even better, he was great to talk to, although he remained very professional, he seemed to 'get' what his customers were about and catered to their needs, including us! The room itself was lovely, very spacious, comfortable, and good value for money. The bathroom was clean and also spacious. We will be staying again on our next trip to Barnstaple to see family.
We found the restaurant menu unusual and not quite to our taste, but again, this is personal preference. We were given positive feedback / recommendations from several locals! As a side note, the parking on site is first come first served, which is fine, but be warned that the smaller car park has extremely tight spaces, with barely any space to manoeuvre. The overflow car park is slightly further away from the hotel but much easier to deal with so I would recommend heading for that one in the first instance if you have anything bigger than a hatchback, it's a stones throw away from the smaller one.

This is a really good looking interesting building steeped in history All of the communication from booking to checking in was really welcoming, friendly and helpful We had a very comfortable room and the bar and restaurant area are lovely Had a nightmare parking initially (typical busy England holiday period) but the hotel had sent alternative options in their fab communications, however again same firm used the day before in Worcester was £10 cheaper for the same period It really is an impressive building
The bar prices, we stayed the night before in another town hotel and the drinks were more than 50% cheaper The bath and shower were really intensely hot

We were glad to find parking in the second car park for hotel guests close by. Room was comfortable and a bit quirky with uneven flooring and original features. Nice bathroom, towels and shower. Breakfast was good although cappuccino was charged as extra.
We had an amazing G&T settling in at another north Devon hotel in our last visit so we were rather disappointed with being served a Hendriks G&T with a slice of lemon rather than refreshing slices of cucumber (and there was a slightly odd taste...maybe from the lemon cut on a shared chopping board or something else?).

I stayed here at the end of march for one night. Overall my experience and time here was good. Friendly staff, good service, a decent room. I slept well. Bed was comfortable. Had everything you could need for a short stay. Good location. Reasonable WiFi connection. An ok sized bathroom and reasonable storage like drawers and a built in cupboard/closet. I visited the 62 bank for dinner and breakfast. I Would happily stay here again and recommend to others :)
I did notice a few things that could’ve done with some touch ups or maintenance within the room, but just general maintenance or cosmetic things.

I had a great stay at this centrally located hotel, right at the beginning of High Street—perfect for exploring the town. The room was clean and comfortable. Parking was easy too: the hotel offers two car parks, and there’s plenty of additional parking nearby if needed. The hotel blends historic charm with modern touches, and the atmosphere feels both elegant and relaxed. Staff were friendly and professional throughout. I didn’t try the food, but the on-site bar and brasserie seemed popular and well-reviewed. Overall, a solid and convenient choice for staying in Barnstaple.

The central town location is perfect, the hotel gives an air of grandeur and is well kept and clean. The food at breakfast was superb but we didn’t try lunch or dinner. The staff are all friendly and efficient, our room was not big but adequate with an excellent shower over the bath. We would definitely recommend the Royal and will certainly return in the future.
The town centre location means all rooms are without a great view as it’s surrounded by other buildings but this is irrelevant when the hotel is this good. There are two car parks very close that belong to the hotel, the age and location of them mean parking is little tight but there is a public car park very close.

The ambience of the interior of the hotel and restaurant were impressive. The staff were so helpful and courteous. We had been allocated a designated parking space following negotiation with reception. Our friends held a blue badge and were so grateful
The heating in the lounge was a concern although the bar staff responded quickly to our request for a warmer environment. We were in Room 205 and there was a a constant sound of creaking floorboards/beams from footfall either on stairway or overhead rooms. The slope in the room spoke of its age!

I liked the location and the fact that there was an area to have a drink and eat.
The courtyard was tired where our room was - flowers strategically placed could have made it look like a haven with the scent from flowers as an added concept. The netting above was ripped and looked a mess and the paint on the floor had lost its glow. Also, It would have been good to be able to take the dog in the quieter bar area. The double bed in our room was awful, because you rolled into the middle.

The location was superb for the theatre, only a minute or two’s walk, two hotel car parks behind the building which was very convenient. The decor in the hotel is very tasteful and classy and has a lovely classic feel, quite quirky. Our room was much more spacious than expected and tea & coffee facilities were excellent. You could really tell there was a lot of history attached to the building with the quirky shape of the room and slightly uneven floor in places and was really comfortable. The bathrobes and slippers was also a very nice extra along with the bottled water. The breakfast was superb and every member of staff we saw was friendly and polite. Overall we would definitely stay here again if going to the theatre.
Everything was great but if we had to be really picky, the pillows could be a bit firmer and ‘full’ and unfortunately the ceiling was creaking quite loudly at night when someone was walking around in the room above, but was not surprising in an older, traditional hotel. We certainly wouldn’t be put off staying again, very luxurious overall.
