The location was beautiful, peaceful and rural. The owner Judy was very friendly, accommodating and approachable. The room was pleasant and bed linen was fresh and clean. There was complimentary tea, coffee, sugar and toiletries and the towels were fluffy and white. The parking was plentiful and easy to access. We had an evening meal in the pub itself which was absolutely delicious and the portion size was very generous. It was definitely value for money and will definitely be returning.
Although we found almost everything was perfect, I think the only slight niggle was the cleanliness of the shower. There were black marks around the shower base and the shower head needed a bit of a clean. Also I thought there needed to be some additional power points or extensions as we had to unplug the heater to use the kettle.

We chose this stay purely on price and rating, and to break up a long journey specifically close to Exeter. Dunsford is a lovely little village, and the Royal Oak is at the heart of it. I’d say ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ - the room is basic, but it was clean. The beds were comfy and quality bedding and towels. Judy and Mark were excellent hosts, and the steaks Mark cooked for our evening meal were fantastic. Nice pub to sit in for a few hours and we enjoyed chatting to Mark, Judy and a couple of the locals. We have a dog and they were really dog friendly with a little welcome pack for our pup in the room. Judy recommended a lovely walk which our pup enjoyed.
Nothing - it’s just a shame the pub wasn’t busier as the hosts deserve it to be.

What a gem. Initially I was a bit disappointed with the room, the bathroom was freezing and only a small electric heater in the main room. If I hadn't been soaking wet from walking the dogs beforehand this would have been no problem! I just needed to dry my clothes. I then found out what I thought was an extractor fan in the bathroom was also a fan heater, toasty bathroom after that! Nowhere to dry the towels, but if you are staying for more than one night the owners give you extras. Its very dog friendly and the breakfast was substantial and good value. The pub opens at 18.30 and does a good selection of 'pub grub' also very good value, much cheaper than average, good portions, the beer selection also very cheap. Another lovely touch was as I arrived on a Monday and the pub is closed mondays, I was still offered an evening meal. The owners are just so accommodating. I'll definitely stay again next time I'm in the area.

We had a lovely stay with my partner and our family dog in October. The food was delicious and cooked better than in some of the restaurants I visited in London, nothing was too much for Judy and Mark. It is easy to get to by bus from Exeter and everybody is very welcoming and friendly. Accommodation is good for a quiet stay and we enjoyed a garden area outside and seeing horses, alpacas and rabbits kept by the owners. The dog beg, bowl, a towel and even biscuits were provided for our dog free of charge.
There is only one bus and it has a very limited service Monday to Saturday with no service on Sunday. If you don't drive, there is not much to see and roads are not suitable for pedestrians to walk from one village to another. But if you just want a quiet retreat in the countryside, it's a very lovely place to be when the weather is good.

The accommodation isn't glamorous but it's a really good base within the pub grounds. There's plenty of parking and fantastic views from the pub garden. It's a beautiful area with lots of animals around to adore. The pub itself is nice and there are also other local pubs that do food that's good too. We had a lovely time there (albeit 1 night). We visited Castle Drogo on the way there.
Just take some slippers or fluffy socks as the floor isn't carpeted so a little chilly on your feet if you wake up in the night for a midnight pee 😉

We needed a place to stay to break up a journey and this was ideal. Rooms were spotless with the usual welcome tray. We ate in their pub at night and it was very good and the locals were extremely friendly sharing banter. The next morning we had a cooked breakfast for £10 each and was well worth it. I would not hesitate to recommend the Royal Oak in Dunsford for an overnight stay.
The steps leading down from the rooms to the pub are a little bit iffy if you aren't fully mobile.

The centre of a quiet little village - feels like the middle of nowhere - Warm welcome, uncluttered functional room , a lot quieter than the normal "room in a pub". Everything worked. Great food served promptly in warm and very pleasant surroundings in the pub. Very good nights sleep and a pleasure waking up to the sound of sheep and phesants ! And excellent value .
Not the place for you If you want a flash wet room with power shower, oversized beds and expresso coffee on tap !

A great pub room in a small courtyard behind the main building, so no noise from below. Spacious rear (sloping) garden next to the church - very peaceful until the bells chimed; which we greatly enjoyed. A caring landlady and friendly visitors, all added to making our stay very enjoyable. We will come again.

The breakfast was more than great as it was truly value for money - in fact I would have paid more for it. The choice was more than you get at some venues where it costs twice the price and is not a patch on what was on offer here. Nothing was too much trouble and all the items on the full English breakfast were cooked to perfection.
There wasn't anything I didn't like. I stayed on a quiet night. It would of been nice to have other guests in the pub but this was not an issue at all for the hosts or their extended family of cats...

Loved the quirky old building and the lovely gardens Also after being a bit disappointed to find out that the pub was closed on Mondays we then really enjoyed the fact that they prepared food for us in the pub and we were able to have a couple of drinks with our food .
Initially disappointed to find out that the pub was closed on Mondays but please see above to see how well the owners dealt with it
