The location and facilities were wonderful. Although some of the decor and fixtures and fittings were a little tired and dated, that in itself made the hotel genuine and unspoilt so it was not a negative

Our only slight complaint is that when ordering in the restaurant my husband requested no tomato or relish in his burger (he has a strong intolerance to tomato) but when the food arrived it contained both. The waiter apologised and confessed he forgot to relay the message to the chef - this is not our complaint as mistakes happen. Our disappointment was that when the burger was returned it was clear that the tomato had just been removed and the relish scraped out. We would have expected fresh food as we could have scraped out the relish ourselves if we were willing to risk it. We feel this let down the meal unfortunately.

Building and location was lovely. Bedroom was spacious. Breakfast was excellent. We also enjoyed the jacuzzi and pool

I had pre-booked a table in the restaurant for 7.30 weeks earlier. When checking at reception I was told the restaurant was fully booked then, and we were offered a different time. Hotel is lovely but very jaded in places, in need of renovation. Bedroom we discovered THICK dust on the wardrobe tops (I have an allergy to dust) and also an old packet of Viagra up there too. Ensuite bathroom definitely in need of attention - bath panel coming to pieces, tile grout heavily discoloured (this is MOULD growing in the grout), cold tap barely trickled. Very old shower with small spray, and standing in bath with a shower curtain is never a pleasant experience, we did expect a MUCH better bathroom for a 4 star hotel

Food was lovely as usual ,just a shame new owners give a food allowance that doesn't cover 3 courses ,used hot tub at pool for the 1 st time

No tablet with pot of tea as before,cheap toilet paper , Afternoon Tea could be improved ,perhaps hot sausage roll or quiche to pad it out a bit ,I am a great fan of Afternoon Tea and had high expectations,and they were not fully met ,jam served in platic tub not quite what id expect from a 4 Star Hotel

The location/landscape and the feel and image of the hotel is really great. Its pretty special. The food is excellent. I'd eat there every day if I could! The history regarding the building is interesting. The swimming pool was very good. The staff were very polite and helpful and made the stay feel like home from home. Beautiful and peaceful surroundings.

The areas such corridors to the rooms felt just a little bit tired. Not a problem, just an observation. It's an old hotel after all. The sauna was out of action, which was a pity, as I was looking forward to being able to use it. However, the pool and the jacuzzi made up for the loss. The rooms were not particularly insulated from noise. Not a problem for all nights except for the last night due to noisy guests in rooms on either side of us.

Stayed a couple of nights with my colleagues at this beautiful old hotel. What a majestic building and setting. Accepting it for what it is, is the best way to view this hotel. Yes its not as grand as it once was, but its full of character and history, and sometimes on a business trip this is nice change from the standard modern chain hotels I normally use. The hotel was clean and tidy, and the staff do their best, with what must be a endless task with a building of this age. The rooms are huge, in fact so large the tv remote wasn't reaching the tv!! One of the most comfortable beds I think I have ever had in a hotel. Food in the evening was good, if a little expensive, but I guess that's the captive market in this location. Breakfast buffet was great, and hot for a change which is not normally my experience of a buffet style breakfast.

No real negatives, apart from....similar comments regarding the reception staff. Lady on check in was lovely, with a warm greeting and explanation of how to get to my room.( she was quite new in the role as she explained). However having returned after a day working in the area with my colleagues....the man on reception was anything but warm. Didn't really have that "reception customer facing" skillset...

Beautiful location. Faded grandeur. Spacious warm rooms. Excellent hot shower. Friendly, helpful staff. Very comfortable. Lovely quiet pool and jacuzzi with stunning outlook. Nothing too much trouble for a quick response from staff.

Not great if you have mobility issues especially as lift was out of order. Some stairs en route to facilities even when on same floor, long corridor distance. A bit old-fashioned including our room decor, although this not necessarily a criticism. However, need to update cooked breakfast menu to include veggie options as standard (delicious vegetarian sausages but they took 10 mins to cook). Bathroom facilities in our room had no external window, fan was so noisy I can't imagine anyone being able to tolerate actually having a bath.

Loved our stay, a nice, relaxing place to be and lots of lovely walks around the grounds. Staff were exceptional - friendly and professional and they really made us feel at home. Special mentions for Stephen, Margaret and David who looked after us for dinner in the conservatory with our dog - nothing was too much trouble for them. Nice to have the pool as well and we enjoyed sitting on the wee balcony in our very spacious room. Loved the history of the place and the grounds staff do a great job, especially looking after the specimen trees. Will definitely be back.

This is the fifth time I have been on a weekend break and it never fails to please. Yes it’s old and palatial but it is also stunning. There is everything you need from bath robes for the swimming pool to board games to while away the evening with a choice of fabulous drinks. Whilst I am not a golfer the course looks amazing and incredibly well maintained. The staff are amazing with the exception of the foreign male receptionist who had no patience and appeared quite rude. Perhaps he was having an off day.

The shower room off the swimming pool is in need of an upgrade. It looks grubby and the shower curtains have seen better days.

Impressive building and former stately home. I love places like this but it feels weird to have a pint in a room as gorgeous as these were. Staff mostly fine but reception could have been better. No one really guided us to our room and being such a large building, it's easy to get lost. Mainly a golfing hotel.

Our room was large but like all such hotels, it needs a little TLC. I'm just pleased someone looks after it and it didn't get demolished. The evening meal was ok but dining / breakfast room could be better. It didn't match the magnificence of the reception other rooms.

There are some criticisms about the Cally Palace; some say it's dated, that it's a bit jaded, but I found I could excuse that when so many other aspects of the hotel shone through. Firstly, the location. The entrance drive is impressive, through beautiful leafy woodland leading to the hotel, which is set in stunning secluded forest and gardens including the golf course and water features. It's like entering Downton Abbey with all its grandeur. You half expect to be greeted by a kilted Laird at the door. Every member of staff I encountered was cheerful, welcoming and happy to help, especially Harry and Ezra in the restaurant. I stayed in a double balcony room (107) which is in a more contemporary part of the hotel. A benefit of this was easy access out to the car park from a ground floor door for unloading my luggage without having to walk too far. My room was very spacious with a King sized bed. Yes, it was a bit dated, but it was clean. There were two armchairs with a coffee table plus two wardrobes, dressing table and a work desk. Another unit housed the TV and tea/coffee making facilities, milks, various teas, sugars and biscuits. There was a luggage rack plus a hairdryer in the dressing table drawer and bathrobes and pool towels in the wardrobe. Large sliding doors led out to the balcony with two chairs and a table. The views were of woodland overlooking part of the golf course. The balcony is part undercover from the balcony above, so even when it was lightly raining I could sit outside. The bathroom was again dated, but again very clean with plenty of soft towels. There were hand-wash, body lotion, shower gel and shampoo available and a decent supply of spare toilet rolls. The shower is an over bath one with a curtain. Unfortunately, on my second morning it wouldn't work, but I managed without and reported it as I was leaving. It did look quite ancient to be honest.
