The location was perfect, close enough to Keswick, but far enough to be away from the hustle and bustle. The bar/restaurant area was beautiful - we didn’t eat at the hotel, but did have drinks in the bar & it was lovely. Room was gorgeous.. made all the better by the stunning views from the window. Bed - ridiculously comfortable, just what was needed after a busy day walking! Bathroom - gorgeous!

The only criticisms I could give would be: 1) The shower tray in the bathroom needs sorting out - as soon as you turn the water on, it fills up.. at one point I had to switch it off as the water level rose over my foot and up to the bottom of the shower door. 2) The fan in the bathroom sounds like a helicopter! It was SO loud, we had to switch it off at the wall!

The room was immaculate with an excellent view, high quality carpet, an ensuite shower and a separate bath. The hotel even included hot chocolate alongside the standard drinks selection which was greatly appreciated. The cherry on top was the dining. From the organisation of the waiting staff to the food, it was spectacular! I looked forward to each meal and cannot praise the hotel enough. It is idyllically located in a rural setting to the south of Derwentwater. There are a few landmarks within walking distance (i.e. up to 3 hours hike) that are worth visiting.

I'd struggle to find anything worth mentioning without being overtly pedantic and insufferable.

We had a fantastic 2 night stay at the Borrowdale Gates Hotel. From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly helpful, friendly, and professional – nothing was too much trouble, and they really made us feel welcome. Our room had been upgraded it was exceptionally spacious, clean, and very comfortable, with everything we needed for a relaxing break and the views were incredible. While we didn’t dine in the hotel for lunch or dinner, the breakfast each morning was absolutely lovely – fresh, well-prepared, and a great way to start the day. The setting is stunning too, right in the heart of Borrowdale. Highly recommended.

Room 24 has an awkward bathroom. Toilet needs to be moved so door opens Room a bit hot at night. Would have liked to have been closer to a local pub or had a more casual setting in the hotel as well as fine dining Lovely to have dinner on one night, but fine dining 2 nights in a row is a bit too much. Having some bar food as an option one evening would have been good. I love desert but didn't like the menu options on either night we ate there so was a bit disappointing. So variation on the classics like an upmarket crumble would have been nice Overall a good hotel though

Location and setting great and surprisingly better internally than we expected having viewed from the road in the previous month. Exterior could be enhanced and paintwork, roof and guttering etc freshened up. Good bar area and dining area with good views and comfortable seating in both the restaurant and the extensive seating areas. Internal fittings and furniture and curtains and shower really good. Great walks available from the doorstep including immediate access to Cat Bells.

Not too keen on the cattlegrid in the access/ entrance and outside would benefit from some enhancement but not that much of an issue.

Location is absolutely gorgeous, the view from the dining room really gave things a luxury feel at breakfast. Nicely decorated too. I felt breakfast was pretty good, the food was fine with a nice selection. The breakfast service was very attentive, staff were friendly and very classy. Lots of natural light in the room and a very comfy bed.

Despite the modern fixtures being great, the bathroom was perhaps a little small in comparison to the room but it wasn't a major concern. Also minor but perhaps more vegetarian substitutes for the full cooked breakfast but honestly there was enough customisation on the dishes and a good selection at the buffet too where I didn't feel like it was a big deal not having fake bacon etc. Only minor stuff really very pleased overall.

Location was stunning in the Borrowdale Valley. Breakfast choice was excellent and all cooked choices were freshly cooked and served at our table. All Hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Hotel did not have a corporate feel which was good.

Electric car charging was via an app to the outside contract provider. The app was slow to set up and a lengthy period of time for it to actually work and start. Others on site I spoke to had the same issue. Not acceptable. Charging should be plug/pay/startwith no need for apps and delays.

The location was beautiful, also such a good idea to put bird feeders outside the restaurant window. Kept lots of diners occupied. Breakfast was very nice , although on our last day our order was totally confused.

Part of the issue with an older property is that sometimes the layout isn't logical. We did find it a bit of a maze using the stairs for the first time. Also on a personal note I found the public rooms too hot.

Gorgeous hotel. When we arrived, we were told our room had been upgraded for free to a superior room with a balcony. Couldn't fault anything. Great night's sleep. the bed was so comfortable. The breakfast was lovely and you could tell it was locally sourced bacon and sausage, we didn't have an evening meal but that was only because it was such a short stay and we had a couple of restaurants we wanted to try. Will definitely be going back :)

Brilliant location in Borrowdale. Very warm welcome. Its a small hotel and so it feels friendly. The location means its quiet, away from the main road in the Borrowdale and also means you can walk the fells from the door, or to the lake, or around the lake, or to Keswick. Our room faced south and had magnificent views towards the mountains. The room was very quiet and was very recently refurbished to a high standard. Dinner was fantastic and definitely worth booking - 2 or 3 courses. Great wine by the glass and without paying a premium. We relaxed in the spacious lounge before and after dinner while the staff served us aperitif and then coffees.
