. We really enjoyed our stay at the American Hotel, and I have to thank the reception staff (such as Masuma) for contributing to our positive experience! From helping with a room upgrade, to cutting replacement room keys, to ensuring no forgotten items were left behind, the service at the American Hotel was next to none. We stayed in a Family suite, which was spacious enough for our needs and more. If I visited Downtown LA again, this is definitely where I would stay.

I like the location of the property. It’s 5 mins walk from Little Tokyo Metro station which is connected to Union Station where you can catch the FlyawayBus to/from LAX airport. The location is safe and has amazing restaurants in the neighborhood. I love japanese food and we were on the right place to enjoy authentic restaurants. The hotel has shared bathrooms and the room is enough for 2 people. It has mini fridge and small tv. We got 1 window which is the most important thing for me when renting a room. It’s next to night bar and restaurant, but it did not bother us much. On our 3rd night, there were bunch of guests that were so loud, shouting, and partying next to our room. I am glad that the hotel people managed to remove them before things get worse. Also you’ll meet homeless people around the area, but I think It’s normal around America. We did not experience anything bad, the neighborhood is pretty much safe for tourist and first time visitors of USA. Over all It’s worth the price consider you are in LA. Not a fancy hotel but more than enough to have a peaceful stay and it keep safe our belongings while we are away.
I didn’t expect anything fancy considering the low price of the hotel. So everything here met my expectation.

The staff were helpful and helped me to order an Uber if I needed one. Vanessa was able to give me directions to Universal Studios and The Aquarium at Long Beach. The Metro was just around the corner and she told me what line to take and where to change stops. The Hotel is close to a Mall, and opposite bars and cafes. All in all I found my 7 days stay busy and interesting, with Ian and the rest of the staff friendly and willing to help.
I found the air conditioning machine a little loud in my room.

The accommodation was great, and the staff were very friendly. I arrived around 9:30 PM, and Ms. Masuma warmly welcomed us and upgraded our room to a family room for free. She responded to our questions quickly and provided a hairdryer when I asked. Their support attitude was excellent. The hotel has a good location, close to bus and metro stations, so getting around was convenient. The room was very good and clean. There is staff available 24/7, which makes you feel more secure in case any issues arise.
However, there was no microwave or clothes dryer, which would be very useful. These are areas that definitely need improvement.

The location was absolutely incredible - close to excellent restaurants (several literally across the street, even more a couple blocks away in Little Tokyo), breweries, bars (Death and Co is world famous). The public transit metro is less than a 10 minute walk away and the station is only a few stops from downtown LA. The rooms were comfortable, good beds and actually nice sofa beds, cold AC, mini fridge. The furnishings are modern and while the building is old, we found it charming. Staff were extremely helpful getting extra towels, bedding, and keys for our party. The hotel was was clean and a very very good value for the quality of stay, and again, perfect location.
The bathrooms are shared across the floor which while fine for our group, might be a deal breaker for some (I wouldn't recommend this hotel to families with young children). I never had a problem getting a toilet or shower, but there is some inconvenience having to walk down the hall to use the toilet. There is a gender neutral restroom on each floor which has a locking door if you feel uncomfortable with the frosted glass shower doors. Recommend bringing shower shoes. The bathrooms situation is weird, but I think an acceptable compromise for the hotels value and location.

Convenient location, just a walk away from Little Tokyo and the train station. Room and bathroom area was clean and tidy. Staff were very friendly and helpful. They do provide a safe luggage storage facility too. Overall a pleasant stay and good price.
There was a strange smell in my room, I don't know where it came from but after opening my window and door for a while it did go away, but did come back every time I left the room. Possibly from the previous occupants or from a room nearby. Location seemed a bit unsafe to stay around too late at night, so may be better to book with friends, or go out only during light out. I did not encounter any issues at all.

The Arts District and Little Tokyo neighborhoods are right outside this hotel with lots of restaurants as well as nearby markets and shops. The location is great for reaching everything in downtown LA, and since it's also close to a major subway connection point, you can go directly to Santa Monica beach, Pasadena, or Long Beach too; or go to Union Station 1 stop away on the subway and take the train to other cities or the FlyAway bus to LAX. The rooms in this historic building are renovated, the beds are very comfortable, and the murals inside that give its history a nod are really beautiful. Big thanks to Masuma at the front desk for being so helpful and super nice!

Ok, it's downtown LA so the area isn't amazing, but we always felt safe day or night walking around here and over to Little Tokyo. The hotel itself is decent enough and good value for the price. The room was spacious and comfortable. Bathrooms were good too, there was one on each level that was private as well as ones with cubicles so it wasn't a problem sharing. They always seemed to get cleaned well too. Didn't have too many interactions with staff but those we did were good, let us check in early which after a 12-hour flight was amazing.
Taps in the sinks in the bathrooms were a bit annoying because you couldn't control the temperature. When we return to LA we will probably stay in somewhere like Santa Monica, but can't complain for DT.

The staff is nice and friendly, especially Masuma, she's very welcoming and helpful with whatever you need help with. Location is very close to Little Tokyo metro and there's a bus station right around the corner. The facilities seem clean enough for the price. There is staff checking the washrooms every morning.
The wall is pretty thin (which could be understandable for such an old building) but you might feel disturbed at night if you're a light sleeper.
