Mitake is a very good experience. The service is great. You have a private onsen and modern bathroom in the room, even though it is traditional. It is easy to reach: take the T line Togendai bus from Odawara station or Hakone-Yumoto station. Stop at 250 Senkyoro-Mae. Mitake is 10 feet away from the bus stop. The same bus goes back to Odawara from bus stop 3 near Mitake (just across the street).

Loved the private onsens, and milk the cat! The traditional hosting and floor bedding was special for us. We didn't have time to play board games but it was really cool that there's a playing room and also Origami books and a common area to chill and play with the cats. It was amazing to be able to wear the traditional clothes during our stay.

The Japanese breakfast was a bit hard-core for us, but it was nice to see that side of the culture. It's a bummer that the only place to take a shower is at the onsen itself, because we came with a baby and it was a bit challenging to shower her at the onsen where she can't sit and both parents are needed, but we understand that it's also part of the magic in this place.

Although this was my fourth time in Japan, it was my first stay at a ryokan with hot springs. I loved everything about Mitake—the courteous staff, the food, the accommodations, the onsen, and the location. The dinner was delicious and plentiful, and I had the chance to soak in both the private and public onsens, both of which were wonderful with natural spring water. In the private onsen, you can adjust the water temperature to your liking. The room had everything needed, including dining utensils, and was decorated in a traditional Japanese style while still featuring a private toilet and bathroom. The ryokan is very quiet and peaceful, likely because it’s not as crowded as a large hotel. A bus stop is within walking distance from the ryokan. Highly recommended!

Everything is nice

First off: location is great, do the Hakone free pass, as soon as you get into Hakone yumoto go to gora, then ropeway, cablecar, eat a black egg from the top of the mountain (smell the Sulfur) and then go down in cablecar to lake aishi (do not have big lunch!!!!!) from lake aishi see the pirate shit but don’t take it, take instead the buss that will drop you in front of mitake, check in, there are 2 cats to pet, your room is classic and old style and your massive dinner will come at 5:30 and then eat at 6 in your own room, later you can enjoy your private onsen, is another world experience(sacrifice? You are getting the best value per money, but the ryokan needs a bit of love in the cleaning and improvement of small details here and there, maybe the food wasn’t hot enough) but the staff lovely again great location value for money considering others prices and location, next morning they will wake you up at 7 with your room set breakfast and after you are ready (check out at 10) from there take the same bus that got you there but in the oposite direction to lake ashi, now take the pirate shit and head to the other cost, you can walk to Hakone shrine if you lake explore the area and after that head to Hakone yumoto station or odawara depending if you taking romance car, or normal train. Good luck

A very beautiful ryokan with very friendly staff. The entire ryokan and the room were bigger than i expected. The room was cosy and comfy, and we had a toilet to ourselves. The toilet was very cold though, as there was no heater. There's a balcony which i would recommend opening the glass doors in the daytime as the garden is beautiful too. They also have a sakura tree in the garden, which was in full bloom during our stay. The food was lovely and very filling. I would recommend opting for the halfboard to get both dinner and breakfast for the full ryokan experience. The private onsen was the best. You can head in anytime without reservations, and you don't have to worry if you have tattoos or not. There's a shower right next to the onsen, so you can shower there before going for a dip. They also provide a wide variety of yukata you can choose from in the public area, or you can simply use the one they provide in your room. Staff were very friendly, there was a grandpa (the boss) and his son, and a few other staff. His son did his best to converse with us in English, and even spoke to us in Malay and Chinese as we are from Singapore, and we were very grateful for that 😊 The cats were so adorable and were happy to get some pats. They also have a homemade gacha machine for you to gacha a Mitake cat sticker at 100 yen, really cute! Would love to come back again, and I would recommend staying for more than a night to really enjoy the place.

I should have stayed another night... 😔 check out timing is at 10 am, which is the same for most ryokans here, so it was definitely too rushed to just stay for a night. Also, there are 4 cats living here, but we only saw 2 🥲

Mitake is etched in our hearts. The kindest staff who even learned a few words in our language. We loved the room, it was exactly what we wanted to experience in Japan. Tatami, futon, even a living area with huge windows. We played board games in the lounge, bathed in the onsen (there is also the option to use the private onsen). There is a konbini about a 5 minute walk from the accommodation. Good transport accessibility to Lake Ashi. And amazing cats! We want to come back here.

Very cute and comfortable ryokan. I liked the friendly staff, traditional vibe and host cats. Supper and breakfast were also delicious and good value but almost too much food so I'm glad we only ordered once of each. Hot spring facilities were clean and cozy.

I got used to the sulfurous smell quickly but something to know before you book, this is a feature of the area.

If I could give Mitake 10 stars I would! This stay was the highlight of my two week trip. The rooms were beautiful and simple, the onsen was inviting and relaxing. However if there’s two things to really highlight it’s the food and the staff. The dinner service is a must! I didn’t anticipate a gorgeous and fresh feast! The staff is truly some of the most kind, generous, hard working people I’ve ever met who clearly love what they do. They were incredibly patient with my friend and I, who speak little to no Japanese. Please consider staying here and appreciate the staff and their hard work! THANK YOU MITAKE!

Nothing!

The breakfast and dinner meals that were included were wonderful. The food was so fresh and lovingly prepared. We changed into the yukatas that they supplied for dinner; this made our dinners more fun and memorable. We had a wonderful and memorable stay at Mitake; wished we were able to stay more than 2 nights. We all agreed this was one of the best parts of our trip! We will be back!

Steep stairs to go into the onsens, but that's just me because I have bad knees.

Staff is welcoming, onsen is super nice, location is calming and peaceful. Cats are friendly too, thought not really interested in interaction unless you have some cat's food :) Location is also nice, there are 2 combini around, one is working 24/7, and a couple of restourants as well. The corridors are waiting to be rennovated, but other than that place looks cosy and not outdated. Private onsens are free of charge, which is also a huge bonus. I would love to come again.

Neighbours had a kid, who cried half of the night, which was understandable, but annoying, because I could not sleep. But it can't be helped. Also, for some reason, the dinner was not that great, cannot recommend, for me it was 3- out of 5 at best. Looked beautiful, but... The breakfast was ok though, 4/5!
