Beautiful place to stay, the room was stunning and the staff were lovely. The dinner was not something my husband and I would have again, but it was great to try. We ended up skipping breakfast and going to the convenience store next door. The bath in the room was really nice but very hot, and it looked out to the forest and was beautiful. The beds were thin so we got extra ones out of the cupboard and doubled them up. The walls were thin and we could hear people staying next to us talking, and their child screaming and thumping around.

Meals were very filling, and mostly delicious. Rooms were big and spacious. Futons were quite comfortable despite our first time sleeping on them. We initially thought they might not have enough support but that was not the case. Private onsen was incredible and one of the biggest reasons to come here. Public onsen was great as well, outdoor one is great for nighttime. Family mart right next door was a godsend (and one of the reasons why we picked this ryokan despite the location).

Only thing missing would be maybe a one sided window in the private onsen so that we can see outside.

We could not have been more pleased with Susukinohara Ichinoyu. I only wished we could have stayed two nights instead of one. The room we booked was spacious and beautiful, and the private onsen was luxurious. Our onsen faced the mountains and trees. Opening the window and enjoying the view was so special. Our room was on the second floor of the main building. I had been worried that this inn would be too far out of the way of the major Hakone sights. But it was easily accessible by bus from Hakone-Yumoto and Odawara stations. We forwarded our baggage from Hakone-Yumoto which was easy and affordable. I actually appreciated that it was away from the main road (RT 138) and other crowded areas because the setting was serene, just what we wanted to feel in a peaceful 'getaway' after a few days in Tokyo. It's still very close to the glass museum and open-air museum. We skipped the main Hakone sights (shrine, lake, cables) and instead opted to hike to the top of Mt. Kintoki (not easy but rewarding). The front desk staff was helpful and gracious with all of our questions and helped us figure out how to get to Odawara station. The dinner was lavish! (The sea bream was so tasty.) If you decide to have breakfast on the day you check out, just make sure to give yourself enough time to get to the train station as the bus ride is easy but can take awhile.

It was our first time staying in a ryokan and it was such a wonderful experience! (We were here around 1.5 weeks ago from time of posting). The private onsen was so relaxing to be in, and the room was furnished well albeit it being quite dark inside due to the wood finishes - we like this aesthetic so we had no issues with this. We left our windows and shutters open to let the natural light in - we were in the 2nd floor. The food was also soooo good!! The brekkie and dinner sets was absolutely delicious, whilst wearing our yukata. We were served different sets over our two night stay, so nothing was repeated :) In terms of getting to the ryokan, we came from Osaka and got off at Odawara station (go to East Exit), and took the Togen Dai (Hakone) bus to Daigatake - which stops conveniently outside a Family Mart. The bus takes roughly 1h 15min. Be aware that it is just a regular bus with little luggage storage. Then it is a minute walk to the ryokan.

The main road gets quite busy during the day time, but it becomes all quiet by the evening.

Everything was beautiful, staff was exceptional, onsen and the private room bath was incredibly rejuvenating. I loved the traditional yukata that were provided to us & the free amenities and drinks bar at the entrance.

The food was traditional, plentiful and lots of variety. Although quite an experience, some of it did not suit my palate. But nonetheless I left dinner and breakfast very full

Wonderful ryokan with spacious rooms, tatami area and most importantly a private onsen. The breakfast and dinner are truly culinary experiences. Located close to the bus stop and with a mini market close by.

The staff doesn’t speak English very well but they were very helpful nevertheless.

The provided dinner and breakfast were fantastic, a real experience. It made the trip easy knowing these meals were being provided onsite. The private onsen in the room was appreciated as was the parking and the public onsen. Location was accessible to Hakone and Gotemba and beyond. Great having a Family Mart next door.

Don't understand why smoking was not allowed anywhere onsite - this was unnecessary and could have been accommodated somewhere outdoors under cover. It meant that guests and staff were regularly walking over to family mart to smoke in the rain. A better path to Family Mart would have ben helpful, very narrow and on the road - wet and dangerous. Parking in the driveway made it challenging to get out at times.

Very spacious and comfy room, private onsen attached to the room is nothing fancy but still very relaxing after a long day. Public onsen was also very big and had an outdoor area with nice landscaping too. Shower room was big with hot water and good pressure. The included breakfast and dinner were yummy with good variety of small dishes and different dinners for both nights we stayed :) There was all you can drink during dinner times + free alcohol bar available all day. Definitely worth the price! Nice location next to a bus stop + convenience store and close to Togendai and the Venetian glass museum.

The private onsen attached to the room could have been a bit nicer and with open windows instead of fixed bars to enjoy the view better. But still was hot and relaxing!

After a long day traversing the wonderful sights of Hakone, I absolutely adored my brief stay here. The hotel is in a peaceful area, two mins walk Family Mart, and the bus stop directly across from there. My room was fabulous, clean, and had traditional Tatami floor and table, a really comfortable bed (there were two), and my own private bath. I sat and watched some fun Japanese music contest on tv while I snacked on an assortment of pickled vegetables and a beer or three. I didn’t watch tv during my time in Japan apart from this hotel, they had fun stations to watch and I really enjoyed the relaxed environment to myself, hopping in and out of my bath for more snacks and checking in on the song contest. Breakfast was a stunning traditional Japanese breakfast. I got in early and it was just myself and a local who I believe was a local tour bus driver who I met when outside Family mart. Breakfast consisted of freshly cooked fish along with an assortment of seasonal appetisers, Miso soup with shell-fish and steamed dumplings with pork and vegetables thst cooked while I had the fish and appetisers, and a huge pot of rice with tea, water and coffee if requested. I didn’t know where to start, but when the man beside me cracked open his egg into the miso and giggled with delight….you bet I followed him through every step of this beautiful breakfast. The reception and breakfast staff were very friendly and I can tell are all really hard workers judging by the quality of the food, facilities, and excellent cleanliness of the room.

My only gripe is that I couldn’t stay longer. Hopefully there will be another time I visit and am lucky enough to stay here again.

Fantastic Onsen hotel, food in particular was an amazing experience, a huge meal and catered to my vegetarian requirements for both breakfast and dinner, they went out of their way to do so. The quality of the non veg kaiseki meal was incredible also. Location is great, very accessible by bus and train from Tokyo. Lots to see nearby.

Cleanliness of the room was very poor, the beds being traditional beds were not too comfy for my western standards but were a nice experience. The private onsen was rather small for 2 people. The bathroom in general was very poorly lit, old fashioned and not very clean.
