Cute little ryokan. Owner was nice and helpful. The traditional breakfast was delicious and cool to experience, onsen was lovely.
There was a weird musty smell in the room, little bits of mould in the bathroom. I wish the listing was more transparent with the private onsen. You are limited to 1 onsen visit of 40 minutes per booking/stay, which we didn’t find out until paying. I don’t usually leave reviews but wanted to mention this in case others had the same thoughts as we did when booking.

Even though we arrived late, the owner welcomed us warmly, provided essential information, and reserved two private onsen times for us. The traditional Japanese experience with a traditional room, kimonos, private onsen, and breakfast was fantastic. :)
A suggestion, not criticism: During breakfast, we didn't know what each dish was. Maybe having a "menu guide" with pictures and explanations for each dish would help guests understand what we're eating and how to enjoy it. :)

Transportation: 1. Takes you about 1 hour from Odawara station, with the bus (T 桃園台線) to the stop 仙石原文化センター. Check the bus timetable on https://www.hakonenavi.jp/transportation/station/ Extra info: Would be convenient for travellers if purchase Hakone Freepass (3 days) or Fuji Hakone Pass (3 days) in advance from Odakyu website. We used Fuji Hakone Pass (since we were going to Fuji the next day) and did not need to pay any extra fee when taking the buses and other transportation needed. Room 101: downstairs, next to the two private Onsens. Large, and very clean. Private onsens: free to book during check-in, can book one more on the next morning. Love the outdoor onsen, people with tattoos would not get rejected!! Dinner and Breakfast: exceptional!! Better enjoy the dinner after the onsen.
Would need to confirm you would have dinner that night between 5-6 pm (dinner at 7 pm), need to be back early for this one thing.

Loved the location off the beaten tourist trail and the private onsen was truly incredible. Likewise, the room felt very authentic and had a great natural view.
Dinner was set at 5:30pm with no option to change the time. Likewise, the menu was set which proved difficult for my wife and myself as we have dietary restrictions (vegetarian). While the staff accommodated our dietary restrictions for breakfast (which again was set for either 7:30 or 8:00am, no changes optional) I felt a bit more communication from the staff ahead of time would have prevented this unexpected, uncomfortable situation.

The journey to the Onsen was a long bus ride but once we arrived the rooms were wonderful as was the spa. We had three rooms as we were five people. We were able to book 3 spots for the private spa. This was a treat as some of us have tattoos and had not used the spas at previous locations. There was a wonderful restaurant just up the road and a Lawsons too. It was a great way for us to experience an onsen. I would defiantly recommend staying here. Just wish we had more time to explore as we would have loved to gone to Lake Ashi.
Just the long bus ride to the hotel, but it was worth it.

Their meals were exceptional - it's worth the stay even just for the meals. The quality of the onsen (hot spring) was just as great. One night, we used the bath at the end of the day (after everyone else had used), but the water and the facility were still very clean. They must be cleaning them between each use - very impressive. The staff was really friendly at the reception desk and in the dining hall. They set up the futon each day and refreshed the amenity daily (tea, snacks included). We were very happy we stayed here.
The futon mattress was pretty thin. We could feel Tatami (Japanese floor covering) underneath and just couldn't get comfortable while sleeping. Signing up for the bath & meal time at check-in and the hostess writing them down on small pieces of paper felt a bit too convoluted, especially if you are staying for multiple days.

This charming ryokan was everything that I've wanted to experience since watching chibi maruko chan as a child growing up. From it's futons to charming employees, there is much to love here! My friend's review: Hakone Onsen Yuyado Yamanoshou is a very charming ryokan. It is within walking distance to a bus stop and several beautiful walking paths. Breakfast, dinner, and onsen time are scheduled at time of check in for the next two days. The onsen is private so perfect for people who are tattooed or shy around strangers. It is set outside with beautiful scenery and warmed rocks to lay against. The onsen provides the usual shampoo and conditioner but also several oils and essences to elevate your facial routine. My skin felt so smooth and healthy after just a few nights of this routine! I always ended my onsen time with a cup of water or milk. The milk there is really fresh! Meals are traditional kaiseki. Be prepared to try new things. The staff is very kind and welcoming. They will happily explain any part of the meal that seems confusing. Some of them do not speak english very well but it's nothing google translate can't fix. They will do everything possible to accommodate your requests. Through no fault of anyone, my husband had a bad stomach ache and they were constantly checking on him. They adjusted his meals so it was more palatable and easier on his tummy too. My husband is a very picky man and he felt that the food here was the best he's had in Japan. I had also requested extra pillows. They didnt have any at first but they remembered our request the next day and brought them in and even tucked in my little plushie! An important thing to note is that you are sleeping on futons. Once I had the second pillow, I slept like a rock but some people may have trouble sleeping on the floor. Hakone Onsen is not the fanciest hotel but the hearts of the people working there are as warm as the hot springs they maintain.
There really isn't much to not like. Perhaps for my friend's husband, it was the sashimi but from what is stated above, he's a picky man and just isn't used to a variety of asian foods as my friend and I.

Staying here was a lovely relaxing break. The room was lovely, the food was excellent (including catering for a vegetarian), the onsen was great and the staff were so helpful. When we arrived we were booked into our dinner (5:30pm) and breakfast slots (07:30/08:45) for the 2 days. We were also booked into our 50 minute Onsen slot for each day. It seemed there was 2 private onsen rooms each with hour slots from 3-10pm - giving enough times for each of the rooms to have a daily slot. There are plentiful public transport options to explore the area and the nearest bus stops are only around a 5-10 minute walk. The Lalique museum is also close by (7-8 mins walk) and has a lovely cafe for lunch and the option to have tea in an orient express carriage - a good rainy day option.
As we’re used to sleeping on a mattress, the futon on the floor was a bit uncomfortable but that’s all part of the experience

We loved our time at this Ryokan! The Onsen time is limited to 50 min per session - but this is more than enough time and the Onsen is really beautiful! The food was amazing - very traditional and tasty! If you want to stay at a traditional Hotel and have a truly unique expierence in Japan, I can highly recommend this place!
Honestly, nothing! Best to check-in early, place is well-accessible by bus but it takes approx 1h from odawara station - we left our big luggage there in a locker overnight and did Hakone vulcano and this wonderful Ryokan only with a smaller backpack, and this made the whole trip even better.

The private onsen and the complete traditional experience with yukatas, tatami rooms, futons. And most of all, the traditional kaiseki ryori dinner. Also the breakfast just as good. Amazing overall and the staff really friendly. To clarify because I had the same doubt, each room has it's own bathroom with shower. Then the onsen is separate. They reserve an hour for you to use privately. Be sure to arrive before 6pm so they can prepare your dinner.
