Great Traditional Ryokan with private onsen. As expected. The staff were good and the multi course Keisei dinner was unique and delicious. The dinner service is top notch. Good value for money given the busy autumn season.

The location is in sengakuhara which is somewhat interior to other attractions. So I suggest to take a bus from gion rather than coming back all the way back to hakone yumoto station if you are doing the famous roundtrip. I am mentioning it because I found it difficult to plan and can't find this information in any other reviews so want this to be useful to others booking in the future

The private onsen and the entire "ryokan" feel but still having a proper hotel like support (front desk, restaurant, unlimited drinks, small store for goods etc.) was perfect. Staff were exceptionally good as well. Wanted to also help travelers find the place. From the Gora Cable Car Station there is a bus-stop right outside of the station (at/near the train crossroads). Take this bus to "Hakone Highland Hotel" (I believe all busses will stop here from Gora station). Directly across the road from the bus stop is Sengokuhara Shinanoki Ichinoyu. Enjoy your stay!

More variety in the offered meals, though they were EXCELLENT, they only offered Japanese meals. For example, it is mostly seafood so if you have a fish/seafood allergy. Was fine for our 1 night stay.

This ryokan was so worth it. Check-in was a breeze, both the lobby and the restaurant have free drinks! We got the package that included dinner and breakfast and both meals were incredible, there was such a wide variety of traditional Japanese food for both meals and there was enough as well that we were so full afterwards. Our room had a private onsen and traditional Japanese futons. The onsen is great and has a cold water faucet so you can adjust the temp of the water if it’s too hot - just get in slowly! All of the staff from the desk to the restaurant were so polite and nice. If you’re riding the “S” Hakone Tozan bus you can get off at the Venetian Glass Mori stop and cross the street. If you’re riding the “T” Hakone Tozan bus you would get off at Shinanoki. Just note that when leaving, the bus to Odawara tends to be *extremely* crowded, and the bus has to go through a lot of turns to get down the mountain. We ended up getting off at Hakone Yumoto station and taking a train instead because I got motion sickness. 😅

Great traditional style Japanese rooms, just what we wanted! Really nice to have a small private onsen in the room. The public onsen we loved going to as well as it is much bigger. Dinner and breakfast was super nutritious. We loved our stay here. A lot of the reviews here mention the location being out of the way but don’t let that put you off. Most places to stay in Hakone are pretty spread out. If you have the Hakone free pass it’s very easy to get a bus from Hakone Yumoto station to there (about 25 minutes). Then the hotel is near the bus to take to Lake Ashi and the cable car (also included in the free pass). If you have a lot of luggage I would recommend forwarding it to your next hotel after Hakone instead of bringing it with you and just pack an overnight bag.

Late check in time. No vegetarian options for dinner but I understand that is what’s traditional.

Really recommend booking with the dinner and breakfast included, both were excellent. On top of this, one of our party couldn't eat fish and they were very accommodating of this and prepared her different options for the meals. Location was very good. Multiple busses run to it from Gora and some all the way down to Hakone Yumato and even Odawara (although I would avoid these if bringing large luggage as the Odawara busses can be very crowded and won't necessarily have room for large bags) The private onsen bath with the room we booked was excellent. Only large enough to comfortably fit 2 people at a time but that was fine you don't want to spend too much time in it in one go. We all used it multiple times despite only staying one night. Would have gladly spent a few extra days here to enjoy it further! While it was the most expensive place we stayed during our trip it seemed very reasonably priced for the quality of the food and the inclusion of the private bath. Would definitely recommend for a stay in Hakone.

There was a low level paper window on the ground floor through which noise outside could be heard quite clearly. One of our party had slightly disturbed sleep because of this because it was next to their futon and it was windy overnight. Worth being aware of if you have light sleepers in your group, but wasn't a major issue overall.

Love the experience! The traditional style dinner (we got sukiyaki) + breakfast is delicious! Not to mention the drinks are included. Also love the private onsen. A great way to end/start the day. The room is super quiet. The hotel also provided clear communication regarding how to get there. It's not the easiest place to get to but the food and the onsen really made it worthwhile.

Nothing much really. If anything, the hotel did provide instructions on getting there but it's in their website: https://www.hakonenavi.jp/international/en/ You can find "Route search". Basically from either Odawara or Yumoto station, take the T-line bus bound for Togendai (platform 4 at the Odawara Station East exit bus terminal). The destination bus stop is “Shinanoki Hakone Highland hotel”, #244, and the journey takes about 40-45 minutes from Odawara or 30min from Yumoto. The hotel is about 1 minute from the bus stop. Just be aware that it's a local bus so there's no dedicated baggage space. With many tourists, the bus does get crowded. Also the road is tiny so there could be traffic.

Definitely opt for the dinner and breakfast plan - both were exceptional. We loved having the private onsen - sizeable and private, peaceful surroundings.

This is more of a head’s up to other travelers - it’s a direct bus from Ichinoyu Sengokuhara to Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto station, but it is a popular route that gets full so leave lots of time when checking out. The day we were leaving, the first bus couldn’t let us on as it was jam-packed, and the second bus we just made it on by squishing in with our carry-on sized luggage. As we headed down the mountain, we saw other stops skipped as there wasn’t any room left on the bus. (Going there not an issue if coming from Odawara Station as that is where the route originates).

Unique ryokan experience. The location is a little out of the way which added to the relaxation as Hakone is quite busy. However if travelling at peak season would recommend a taxi transfer as people were waiting hours for a bus. The kids adored the family room which had a climbing wall & bunk beds in it that was a lovely surprise for them. The private onsen is an absolute treat as well as all the extras such as robes, slippers, toiletries etc. The Kaiseki style dinner was incredible - the photos do not do it any justice - stunning presentation and the care taken was evident. I am vegan and was so grateful that they made me a special menu - thank you so much. The ryokan is also opposite a Glass Museum which we would recommend visiting.

Nothing!

As expected of a Ryokan, the experience, welcoming atmosphere, nature, and onsen were all absolutely amazing. We were welcomed with the utmost sincerity, offered supplies and welcome drinks as we needed, and guided on everything we needed. The onsen was absolutely amazing as it is semi outdoors with 2 pools, with a lounge area for after you are done to enjoy their complimentary soda ice creams!

We missed out on meals due to a booking misshap + they didn't have enough ingredients to accommodate extra purchased meals. But this is largely due to booking.com rather than the accommodation itself.

The private onsen in the room was incredible and the outdoor shower meant you could alternate between the heat of the onsen with a cold shower if you wanted to. The breakfast & dinner that we had were delicious! They supplied free robes and other amenities such as umbrellas etc

It was a long way out from the main town, about a 30 minute bus trip. I’m not sure if this is the case for every room but in our room the toilet & sink was in a separate area where it doesn’t receive heat & therefore gets quite cold (nothing can really be done about this though unless ducted heating was installed, and this was only very minor for us). In the two storey room with upstairs the railing is loose. If you’re having the hot pot dinner make sure to check underneath for the second lot of meat & veg as we didn’t realise oops!
