Completely marvellous experience. The staff were welcoming and helpful, they did everything to make us comfortable and help us enjoy our stay. If you want a truly exceptional experience of Japanese-style rooms and meals (not to mention the wonderful hot bath) this is the place. I am so glad that we opted for the half board, as the beautiful evening meal was a special way to celebrate the last night of our holiday. Staff gave us good advice for exploring nearby and finding the best spots for views of Mount Fuji (not visible from the hotel itself). [This is a real review, I'm not being paid for it, we genuinely found this an exceptional hotel :-).

You might find the hotel a little difficult to find if driving, but it is nicely located on the hillside, tucked among the trees. Use your satnav. Turn left at the little local post office. Follow the single-track road round to the left. Look for the name of the hotel written discreetly on the letterbox by the steps up to the main door.

A truly unforgettable stay at Ryokan Hakone Fura. From the moment we arrived, the warm hospitality and attention to detail from the host made us feel incredibly welcome. Every aspect of our experience was exceptional. The traditional Japanese room was spacious, serene, and perfect for our family of four. It was beautifully maintained, blending comfort with authentic Japanese aesthetics. One of the standout highlights was the exquisite kaiseki-style dinner and breakfast. Each dish was a work of art, showcasing seasonal ingredients with refined flavors and elegant presentation. It was a culinary experience we won’t forget—every bite reflected the care and tradition behind Japanese cuisine. The onsen was another highlight—clean and soothing Most importantly, the hospitality here goes above and beyond. The host was incredibly kind, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile. We felt truly cared for, like guests in someone’s cherished home. Hakone Fura is an absolute gem. We can’t wait to return.

The only minor downside is the location a little bit far away from the main attractions but there’s a bus stop 10mn walk.

I've always dreamed of staying at a ryokan and Hakone Fura is the quintessential ryokan experience with both private and public onsen options and an amazing kaiseki dinner that was beautifully presented. We got to try lots of small courses, and discovered foods that we wouldn't otherwise have known about. Breakfast was also amazing. I came with my two elementary school age kids, so it was nice that the ryokan accepts kids. Our room was clean, spacious, and appealed to my sense of minimalism, but with beautiful Japanese charm in the sliding wooden panels, tatami mats, and floor futon. All very cozy and comfortable. After the onsen, my skin felt so soft and my daughter's tummy ache went away. Definitely healing waters indeed. This was a splurge for my budget, but worth it! The hosts were so kind and gracious. Highly recommended, especially for foodies like us who love trying new things!

Location can be a challenge to get to. I found Hakone in general to be very hilly with lots of uneven terrain, which can be both charming and brutal for folks with mobility issues or bad knees, so just a heads up.

Every thing was great, welcoming host, confortable and large rooms in the japanese style, convenient location to easily visit the most important spots in Hakone (Gora, open air museum, cable car to Owakudani, Pola museum, Togendai and the lake, Fuji san view and trails, ...), and above all, amazing food, delicious and very refined Japanes cuisine, both for diner and breakfast. Really amazing

The only possible improvement would be an open-air onsen, even though the one we had did have wide windows looking out.

Was not the first time we experienced the traditional Japanese hotel: Ryokan. This one was one of the best with private and public onsen within the facility. Only 6 rooms available, so it made the experience very special and rare. Located at about 30min by bus from Hakone Yumoto sta. The owner even use his own car to stop by the next bus stop (Sengoku), from the ryokan… very nice as it was raining that day (only 3 min by car) The all experience was exceptional and the onsen are perfect! We strongly recommend this resort.

Loved my stay at hakone! although traveling there from osaka was quite a commute it was so worth it. my friend and i ended up arriving around 6:30 which is right after dinner started, we were greeted w a warm welcome and taken up to our gorgeous room before joining dinner. our meals exceeded my expectations! our plating was set up and we had an 8 course meal that was prepared so delicately and everything was so delicious. you can tell they put love and effort into every course and there was only one guy running everything and he was so sweet and did an amazing job! we mainly went for the onsen which was also amazing, during morning time its a public onsen so anyone can go, and i night you can reserve a 40min time slot to use privately. the onsen was much needed during our busy japan trip it definitely healed me, and breakfast was many courses as well and prepared perfectly. overall this stay was really amazing and i wish i stayed for longer!!

the commute was a bit tiring since its uphill so after we got off the bus we had to walk up quite a bit with our luggage but the stay itself was perfect no complaints :)

Fantastic breakfast and dinner. We stayed when there were no other guests, and it was just the most peaceful stay. It was an amazing experience in Hakone. The owner did a lot to ensure our comfort and even drove us to the bus station at the end of our stay.

The location is up a hill, just be forewarned in case you are carrying lots of luggage.

The Kaiseki dinner was amazing and so was the breakfast. I enjoyed using the baths--essentially private and the host was awesome. It's a bit of a hike (7-8 minute walk) to get from the main road to the property and I was not looking forward to doing it again, but the host was so kind and offered me a ride down!

There were bugs here and there, but to be expected of an older property.

We had the most relaxing stay here, the room was so cosy yet spacious and we were able to book the onsen for private use after dinner for an hour which was a great experience. The dinner and breakfast was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious- it was a perfect sample of local foods and dishes we wouldn't have been able to order on our own in a restaurant. You will leave very full! This was such a special experience and would definitely recommend anyone staying in hakone stays here!

Nothing - it was amazing!

Food is absolutely delicious and will definitely be one of the best meals you'll have in Japan. The staff is also incredibly kind and helpful. The hotel manager took us to the bus stop in the morning since we couldn't get a taxi and he even mailed my jacket (which was forgotten in the room) to another city.

Hotel is a bit dated and onsen is indoors, but that's clearly advertised in the pictures/reviews.
