This place is AMAZING, the lady who looked after us was very attentive and polite. She always greeted us with a smile and bow and literally did everything for us, showed us how the room/bath works, set up our futons, served us dinner and breakfast. For dinner we were ushered into our own private room overlooking the edo garden and had a Kaiseki dinner which is many courses of seasional dishes. She told us what each item was as she served us, it was like 8 courses. The food, service and atmosphere was truely relaxing and beautiful. 100% recommend as a nice treat. The rooms have Bvlgari products and a beautiful defuser scent with authentic tea.

I am really struggling to put something down here! I'm not sure if its allowed or not but perhaps sitting in the gardens and having tea? Honestly this place was perfect for a couple.

We loved our stay here. I was a little nervous because of some of not glowing reviews but I thought it was fantastic. Those complainers are just grumpy and probably impossible to please. This place is old. It's been operating as a lodging for over 100 years. It looks like the last major update happened in the 70s and it is still in great condition. It almost has a mid century modern vibe to it. The fact that it's been so long since a major update and it's still in good condition shows how well taken care of it is. Kind of feels like staying in a museum. It's old but lovingly preserved. The girls that took care of us were always smiling and helpful. They helped us get dressed for dinner. Our meals were taken in private rooms. We never really saw anyone else. It felt like our own private Japanese mansion. Loved soaking in our private tub after a day sight seeing. Good location. Walked there from the train station. Short walk to the morning markets and old town. The air conditioning was strong and the rooms are huge.

We were so full from the breakfast and dinner that we really didn't get to explore the food in the rest of town. No big deal

The room was huge and beautiful! The onsen bath was also huge and perfect for resting after a long day. Basically once you get there, you don't really want to leave, just to chill. The beds are comfy and the pjs are perfect. The staff welcomed us with a ceremonial tea and sweets which was a lovely experience, and they explained everything about the stay. It's a traditiona ryokan, so everything feels ceremonial and according to "the rules". There are all sorts of perks like free sake and cider in the fridge etc. Dinner was great, with A LOT of dishes that kept coming one after the other! They did their very best to meet all our dietry requirements and we really appreciated it. The food is served beautiufully. It was nice to wear a yukata, although it would have been better to receive a clear explanation about how to wear it to avoid "mistakes", like wearing the wrong colour of socks.

The staff make a huge effort to be accommodating and are very formal, but it ends up feeling a bit off at times. This might be because most of them don't have good English, or generally cultural differences. We felt as if we're not allowed to wander around, and were always escorted in and out of our room (for dinner, breakfast, check out etc).

An amazing experience of a lifetime! Would have spent the rest of our lives living here if possible. :) The entire staff were amazing--so kind and considerate. Food was delicious. Seven course dinners and huge breakfasts. The building is beautiful and historic. The room was traditional and big. We read some negative reviews and do not understand them; I think maybe the price point is high for those reviewers and they had unrealistic expectations. We would not have changed a thing about this journey and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a unique ryokan experience.

Travelers using Japan's great luggage service to send luggage ahead to next hotel should note that this ryokan does not provide this service and you'll need to take your luggage to one of the luggage services (we used Japan Post which offers next day) at the Kanazawa station.

My stay at Kinjohro was the absolute highlight of my trip to Japan so far. I stayed there from September 5th until September 6th, 2024. It is a luxurious and long-established boutique hotel, centrally located between the Geisha district and Kanazawa Castle. As soon as you enter the door, you are taken on an incredible journey back in time to Japan's traditional hospitality culture. The employees wear kimonos. The common areas and rooms are extremely tastefully furnished with numerous traditional art treasures and tatami mats and provide traditional interior including the doors, windows etc. In my spacious room, I was offered matcha and various sweets as a welcome. There is a traditional bathtub, Bulgari toiletries and many inclusive drinks. Guests sleep on comfortable futon beds prepared for during dinner. Modern amenities (television, room cooler, etc.) are not missing. Breakfast and dinner are real feasts in private rooms with a view of the Japanese garden. I wore a provided yukata. There were 10 courses of local Kanazawa cuisine, and the visual and flavor quality, as well as the fanciness of the food, was fantastic. It is not surprising that the restaurant has received several awards from the Michelin Guide. Some of the staff speak English and they all go above and beyond in their efforts to provide an incomparable stay. They are all extremely friendly and helpful. I received several lovely gifts and was picked up and returned from my room door for dinner and breakfast. The employee accompanied me to the cab and waved at me while I was leaving. Overall, it was an absolutely unique experience from start to finish. I can recommend the Kinjohro 100% and would have loved to stay longer. I would like to say a big thank you to the great team!

I previously stayed at The Okura in Tokyo for a week and am a rather demanding traveler. I have to be honest: I liked everything at Kinjohro. Only point: unfortunately, as an animal lover, I cannot support the consumption of shark fins. However, I am aware that this is a traditional dish.

Exceptional food experience: the kaseiki evening meal and the breakfast were really outstanding in terms of the ingredients & the presentation. I especially enjoyed the incredible ceramics (like eating on museum grade ceramics) and the 2 exquisitely refined dining rooms looking out onto beautiful snowy garden views. If you appreciate antiques, historical lineage (the garden at the entrance is 500 years old), and 'wabi sabi' this is for you. It's not a place of modern conveniences but there's plenty of old school service and when you slow down you can really experience a profound relaxation.

The bathroom was a bit tired...

There are only six rooms and each had a corresponding dining room on the ground floor. It was possible to walk around the ryokan without meeting another guest. This is a rare luxury. Breakfast and dinner was served in our red themed room with windows looking out into the garden. The dinner was superb with good quality food like seasonal female snow crab and Noto beef. It was possibly the best meal we have had in a ryokan. Breakfast was good but one must understand this was News Years Day 2025. There was a very nice mochi making ceremony in the car porch attended by all the staff and guests. This was a nice touch.

This is an expensive Ryokan by Kanazawa standards. However, one must balance this against the truly excellent dinner we had and the complimentary in room beverages- which included sake, beer, tea and cider. There was no indoor or outdoor bath available but the deep soaking cedar bath tub in each room made up for this.

The staff was excellent - professional and attentive. They were very helpful and made our stay feel special. Japanese dinner, especially our second night, was outstanding. The amenities offered by the hotel were very nice. And the location in Kanazawa was perfect for sightseeing.

The Japanese style beds were very uncomfortable, as there was not much padding and it felt like I was sleeping on the floor. Perhaps that is just how they are; I thought they would be more comfortable because of others’ reviews.

Everything! This is a luxury one-off experience, with a private dinner curated by a famous chef. The attention to detail in the surroundings, the food and the service is second to none.

It's not that I didn't like it. Sleeping on futons in a beautiful Japanese ryokan is special. But my old bones didn't like it so much. Getting up from the floor presented some challenges to us old folks! Nonetheless, I'd do it again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Kinjoro. The staff was friendly, the room with a garden view was very nice. We booked the room with breakfast and dinner included and found the food, as well as presentation and private dining room, excellent. Even though we heard other people in this ryokan, we did not encounter another guest during our stay. This ryokan is about a 7 minute taxi ride from Aomori station and within walking distance of Old Town.

Considering the cost of staying here, the one, small thing that bothered me during our stay was having to pay for a cup of coffee at breakfast
