We stayed at the Candeo in Tokyo's SHimbashi area before we came to Kyoto and loved our stay so we kinda knew it would also be as awesome but we weren't prepared for how much better it was in Kyoto! The hotel's design and lay out is a chic blend of traditional Japanese Ryokan upon entry and flows out into a gorgeously designed courtyard that leads to the elevators to a modern building where the rooms are housed. It is located on a quiet side street about a 10 minute subway ride from Kyoto Station and about a 7 minute walk from Karasuma Oike station, the local subway stop. It is also a 5 minute walk to the local bustling market Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping street and about a 15-20 min walk to Kamu river and the Geisha/Gion district. Our room was another twin on the 6th floor and was even more prettier than the Tokyo location. It was wide and spacious with Japanese blinds, spotlessly cleaned and the shower and toilet are in separate rooms which is a total plus for travelling with friends as you don't have to wait to use the amenities. The women's onsen was on the 2nd floor and just as clean and peaceful as the Tokyo location. The staff are a blend of Japanese and international folks and were super helpful and friendly our whole stay. Big thank you to the wonderful front staff lady who helped me figure out the washing machine situation! We loved Kyoto for it's serene, traditionally oriented and natural settings and Candeo's design and hospitality truly reflected the city. Looking forward to coming back.
The hotel was a bit challenging to find on our arrival to the local subway station. We put in the hotel name in our google maps and it indicated the hotel pin was located at the center of the nearest major intersection and we were a bit at a loss. We had to roam the area for a bit to no avail then we decided to pop into a local bar in a bookshop close by and met a kind and lovely bartender who called the hotel for us and asked for the exact address. They gave him the address for Rokakku Kitchen 109 which finally provided us with the right address. It would be more efficient to fix this on google maps for future guests who might experience the same confusing pin drop dead in the middle of a busy intersection.

The hotel looks exactly as it does in the pictures and yet it still exceeded my expectations. Breakfast is kaiseki style and cold but let's you try a lot of the regional/seasonal vegetables. It's really delicious and nutritious. The public bath was simple but came with a lot of amenities. I was pleasantly surprised by everything and would stay here again.
If you have a lot of luggage... Exit 6 on Karasuma Oike Station does NOT have an escalator or an elevator going up to the street level. There's about 4 mini flights of stairs. You've been warned. Instead, I suggest getting a taxi to and from Kyoto station when you are bringing your luggage along.

The hotel had a beautiful aesthetic that was both mid-century modern with an older Kyoto style - but all the conveniences and luxury of a four star hotel. The breakfast was an exceptional bento box offering - with a large rang, including many vegetarian items (Japanese version).
The Onsen (public baths) on site allowed small children who didn't have much supervision and had loud iphones and ipads for their entertainment - not making for the most relaxing experience. It would be great to have some better rules around kids accessing the bathing areas.

The rooms were small, but well laid out and quite comfortable. Free coffee in the library was very appreciated, but I was not sure if we were allowed to take the coffee back to the room as the tatami mat area said no food or drink allowed. The property was a nice blend of history, with the front portion of the building and modern amenities. The ladies’ onsen was quite lovely- I especially appreciated the steam room.
Just a few downsides- the older part of the building has very low ceilings, so watch your head when walking through doorways! Also, it would have been great to have a cold plunge in the ladies’ onsen (I think the men’s side has one.) Also, at certain times of day a very strong smell of cigarette smoke wafted into the onsen (from the street, perhaps?)

We really liked this hotel! And also the city of Kyoto. The hotel is well located. Just walk around the area and let yourself be surprised by the many little bars/ restaurants around it. The bath was good and not too crowded every time we used it. It’s open until very late so you can enjoy it basically and any reasonable time. Perfect for a day after visiting the main attractions. We did not have breakfast in our stay.
The hotel has 10 floors full of rooms and just 2 washing machines. One of them work with a code and if the person who used it is irresponsable, the machine could be blocked for hours. We wanted to use it (as we were already 3 weeks on the road and needed to wash clothes) but it was simply not possible. A pity!

Staff was very friendly and helpful.
The bed pillows. Much too thick and hard. Prevented me from having a good sleep. Asked for a different pillow; it was different but still uncomfortable.

We had a very comfortable stay at Candeo Hotel. The room was clean and a bit small but normal for local room size standards. We really liked the hotel's common areas at ground level, with beautiful tradiional Japanese interior spaces (library, study and dinning rooms). Also enjoyed the spa and the beautiful internal garden. The location was excellent, with tube stations and bus stops at walking distance.
Overall we had a great stay. Staff could be a bit nicer. The bereakfast was somewhat repetitive, I would recommend not paying for the hotel breakfast as there are interetsing cafe's just around the corner form the hotel.

Clean room, decent size for 3 people
Please check you have the right location as we showed up at the google maps address and apparently it’s been an issue they have been trying to fix and sometimes it’s wrong. Overall however location was amazing and perfect for exploring. The Food…. The Japanese and western style breakfasts were presented beautifully however they have limited time slots so I would book your slot in advance, we didn’t end up loving either, just not ready for so much fish in the morning, but if you want to skip the breakfast in the hotel, there are two gorgeous bakeries around the corner, Fiveran, and Amon Dacotan. Literally across the street.

Proximity to everything in Kyoto - location is amazing. It was fabulous. Cool old Japan vibe with modern amenities. The beds were comfy, big for tall Canadians, onsen was lovely (our favorite in Japan), laundry machine awesome, easy to use. Wash and dry in one unit. !!! It was fabulous. Totally recommend.
The area is really busy and I think next time we would stay out of the downtown core. But we are from a small city so appreciate a calmer pace. The hotel is quiet. Close to Starbucks, Ace hotel for Stump town coffee which was a ten.

Loved the old traditional structure at front !! Gorgeous, the decor and facilities of the main building behind was 10/10. Location was also 10/10.
The bar was useless. Impossible to enter, serve yourself, the library etc was rubbish. It was impossible to get advise on where to eat, the Hotel should provide food. A restaurant or even a cafe with goo snacks and espresso would go a long way. The breakfast was crap, a gimmick that was almost inedible and $40AUS. Glad I only had to endure one. You should have a gym, never used the phoney Onsen, just crap.
