For our trip to Kyoto, we took our time to research and find the perfect hotel for our stay - and indeed we found it! Kyoto Shinmachi Rokkaku Hotel was a gem of a small boutique hotel, and offered us just the kind of experience we were looking for. The hotel is set in a very quiet street, but extremely close to most on offer in Kyoto, as well as great places to go out and enjoy the City. The hotel is very small, without any facilities, but extremely welcoming, clean and comfortable. The staff was exceptionally helpful both prior and during our stay, and we loved the seating area by the entrance with complimentary coffee and biscuits. Our room was very large to be in Japan, and with the most incredibly comfortable bed and spacious and well-appointed bathroom. We also enjoyed the seating area in the room. We slept extremely well! We arrived from Osaka by train, and used the subway, and the hotel was within a short, easy walking distance (even with our luggage). For all our sights and adventures in Kyoto, we either walked or took the local bus / subway. So easy. We also enjoyed the local bakery, coffee shops, restaurants and bars, most of which were situated within minutes of the hotel. Some to highlight includes Ki West (Bar - two doors down - brilliant and extremely welcoming), Larimar Blue (Spa - three doors down, great for relaxation), WAGYU KAJIYA (excellent restaurant just up the road), Nota Dorayaki & Black Tea (hidden amazing place for traditional Japanese pancakes and tea, again just down the road), Meat Soul (fabulous Yakiniku restaurant just around the corner), and last but not least - Fiveran - an amazing bakery 5 minutes away where we ate far too much for breakfast each day - delicious coffee too!

The hotel was perfect for us, and we would love to stay there again!

Everything! This is the second time we are staying there. The staff is fantastic, very helpful (they helped us with reservations, checking if shops were open etc.) and were very patient with us :) The Deluxe room is very comfortable! Super quiet, comfy bed, beautiful decoration. The room temperature was perfect although it was getting cold outside. Spacious room, complimentary tea and coffee (good quality). The location is perfect for us - not too close to the touristy placed but walking distance, with bus and subways nearby (10 min walk). Many local restaurants around the area too. Highly recommend.

Everything. The beautifully decorated room. The bath and shower. The comfort of the bed. The quietness of the place! The size of the room (we were upgraded since we stayed more than 5 nights). We keep coming back to this hotel whenever we visit Kyoto. We are never disappointed. The staff is very helpful and friendly too.

Nothing... Maybe the fact that the sun came out at 4:45 am (summer), and although the curtains are thick, there is a bit of space between the curtains and the wall and the light slips in.

The hotel was clean, had all the amenities, quite strategic location for a short stay in Kyoto. Spacious rooms.

I feel there was a misunderstanding about the beds. The room had double bed + futon. We paid for extra bed, so my understanding was that we were supposed to have a room with a double bed, futon + extra bed, instead, there were no extra beds in the hotel, they just prepare the futon for that extra fee.. That made our sleeping arrangements not very comfortable, but we were able to find a reasonable solution with the hotel personnel.

The staff was very attentive and helpful, there was an issue with my booking which they fixed with no fuss, they even upgraded us to a better room for free. The shower is very spacious and nice. They bring the breakfast to your room every morning. It is in a quiet sidestreet but you can get to the main shopping area (including nikishi market) in 10-15 minutes and to the main attractions easily by public transport.

Fabulous! We saw multiple great reviews for this boutique hotel, which guided our choice and it went beyond our expectations. The location was perfect, it is very central and convenient, there are two different subway stations at 10 min walking distance or less, and bus stops as well. It is far enough from the more touristy shopping streets (so it is quiet and relaxing), and there are plenty of local restaurants, bars and even a local food supermarket not far. But it's also walking distance from the shopping streets and department stores. We loved the comfort and quietness of the room, and the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. We booked the standard room and got upgraded to the deluxe (wedding anniversary!) and it was fantastic, so nice to have space in the room, even a small table and sofa, quite a luxury in Japan to have such a big room, beautifully decorated and super clean. Very happy with our stay, we will come again!

Nothing. Everything was perfect. Some may complain that there was no breakfast but honestly there are plenty of eating options within just 5-10 min walking distance (we had fun trying out a few!). And you can make yourself tea or coffee in the room (good one), so it's easy to buy your own breakfast at a convenience store (there are a lot of them around the area, and one just 5 min walking distance away!) the day before and eat your breakfast in your room.

It was a perfect stay! The hotel is cosy and comfortable, it had everything that we needed. The bed was really comfy, I slept perfectly. The shower was also very good, and I loved the cosmetics provided. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Location is very good, just one short metro ride from Kyoto railway station. We didn’t try breakfast, but there was tea and coffee in the room. You can feel attention to every detail.

Everything about this hotel was wonderful- we appreciated the service, location, cleanliness and immense comfort! The room was spacious with a beautiful aesthetic. The western breakfast was a supreme choice. The staff and service was superb.

My only recommendation would be to alert your guests to the wonderful book/resource in the rooms. Ours was hidden in a drawer and we discovered it on the last day along with the coffee and tea availability in the room. We didn’t think to open all of the drawers.

The room was very spacious and the staff were very friendly. It was so close to every attraction point like walking distance or easy one line train or bus. The bathroom was very spacious and modern with touch of Japanese culture. We have been staying in couple of hotels in Japan now (different cities) and so far this one stand out by far.

The hotel doesn’t have Onsen and restaurant but there are plenty of options in walking distance that I personally don’t think it should effect the eating of the hotel itself.

Very amazing staff. Very friendly, outstanding smiles and service. Loved the location away from all the crazy tourist traffic. Quiet area. It was amazingly clean. Bed is heavenly and felt like sleeping on a cloud.

There was an issue where they accidentally over-billed by Equiv of 7 US dollars due do a Japanese tax. They apologized profusely and provided a refund in cash Japanese yen, which was fine! The next day, another staff member apologized and stated that the previous staff member shouldn't have done that & I needed to cancel the booking, rebook, return the cash the previous staff member gave, and they recharged my card with the extra 7 dollars added on to the bill. ..It was fine, but took up valuable time that was, truly, fairly ridiculous over ~ 7 US dollars.
