Very comfortable! Staff are lovely and breakfast is delicious. Only a short walk from Kyoto station but in a very quiet and charming neighbourhood. We’d happily stay here again.

We had such a memorable stay at this lovely ryokan. The Japanese breakfast was absolutely beautiful. You can truly feel that the owner family has poured their heart and soul into creating a warm and thoughtful experience for their guests. The owners were also incredibly friendly and helpful, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. The decor throughout the ryokan was charming and full of character, and our room was generously sized, offering a genuine ryokan experience. We also appreciated the small touches like helpful instructions in English, which made everything feel welcoming and easy to navigate as my partner is unable to understand Japanese We only wish we could have stayed longer. We’ll definitely be back again!

The holder of this ryokan were such a lovely and welcoming family! They always try to help when you need anything and give you advises for Kyoto. The small apartments were so lovely. It was amazing to experience the old living and sleeping style of japan. It was really clean and had anything you need for our stay. The breakfast was outstanding! It tasted like my japanese grandma cooked just for me. The small onsens are really cute and absolutely sufficient for 2 people.

The sanitarys could be bit cleaner. There were some dark spots on the hose in the onsen. The water pressure in the apartments is a bit weak. Sadly I spent more time trying to not burn or freeze myself.

This place was so lovely - it has so much personality and charm. The owners have poured their heart and soul into this place and it shows. I loved all the details with photos of other guests, trinkets, and other decorations around (as a cat lover, this was particularly great!) The room size is very generous, with a tatami-floor bedroom, a hallway with a sink, a separate toilet, and a shower room. There's also a big closet to store your luggage. This ryokan is very quiet and peaceful and such a great way to get closer to Japanese culture. The breakfast was delicious, but you need to remember to order it the night before. Honestly, I wish we stayed longer and got to know the owners better, they seem absolutely lovely.

The midnight curfew - I completely understand the reason for it, but for me personally it was a bit stressful. So this might not be a minus for a lot of people :) The area is very quiet, which is nice, but it's also a bit of a walk from the main parts of the city.

We had a great stay, location is decently close to the train station. Couple managing the Ryokan are very friendly and helpful! Breakfast is amazing! Futons were very comfortable for a futon, with an extra mattress underneath. Still a futon though, which is sometimes problematic if you are a curvy woman. But they had extra pillows in the cupboard, so easy enough so put an extra under your waist/back! We used the onsen several times and it was really nice after a log day of walking. Just a note. It was very hard to book this place. I booked another hotel for 4 nights in Kyoto with free cancelling, and then checked this Ryokan several times a day for weeks. Finally I found 3 of our 4 night avaliable and booked them on a spot, getting a business hotel near the station for our final night. So worth it. Best accommodation in value vs price so far in Japan, now having spent 4 weeks travelling here. We even got some coasters and a Polaroid from the hosts to remember our stay by!

Being an old Japanese building, you can sometimes hear other guests. Not bad at all compared to some guesthouses we've visited, and it's a very quiet neighbourhood, but its good to keep in mind if you're a light sleeper.

If you are looking for a relaxing place where to stay during your days in Kyoto, this is the best one! Ryokan is owned by a lovely couple that was always available at the desk, they were so kind and reliable, also there was a lady cooking delicious breakfast everyday (I had loved to try the traditional Japanese breakfast even if it was very different from my normal one, taste was amazing). The ryokan is so quiet, with curfew and rules about noise, I was comfortable with it because after long day walking around the city this was helping for me to rest. They have a small nice onsen that you can book at the desk, it was perfect for me in the evening time before going to bed. If I will come back to Kyoto, I will choose this place without esitation. The neighborhood's neatly lined roads and the property's close proximity to the Kyoto Tower as a visible landmark made the place extremely easy to navigate around and to and from, especially with the Kyoto Station nearby as well. The room was cosy with just enough space, various amenities were provided, and the futon bed was comfortable to sleep in. The breakfast was abundant and delicious (shoutout to the blueberry alcohol served), and the staff were friendly and accommodating when asked if I could pack my unfinished food to go. The place itself was also beautifully decorated from the entrance to the lobby, as well as all the hallways. We were given a nice little commemorative photo and some coasters as we were leaving after check-out.

Having just a single key per room, which needs to be returned to the front desk whenever exiting the property, just means that a bit of coordinating will be required when multiple people with separate schedules having to go in and out are involved.

We absolutely LOVED this place. The ryokan is ran by husband and wife and they were super friendly and welcoming. The place also have private onsen that you can book for yourself during 4pm-9pm window. They also offered Japanese styled breakfast at ¥1200/person that we would recommend to try once. The decorations are lovely. They also have parking in front with fee of ¥1000/night. Ryokan room is spacious, with private shower and toiler. The location is at a quiter part of Kyoto which we much more appreciate. On check out day the owners take photos of you to put on their wall

Nothing major but the ryokan is not soundproof so for other travellers that prefer more privacy please keep in mind.

The couple who ran the inn were so accommodating and kind. The rooms were spacious and lovely. I particularly loved that they had a public bath available for private appointments. The breakfast was exquisite and the woman who brought out our food was lovely. We loved our stay and would recommend this inn to everyone and would gladly stay here again. The location was close to Kyoto station and many bus routes.

I would suggest adding a trash can under the vanity. Having a spot to put clothes would also be helpful but I also understand I booked the traditional room so that may be just how traditional rooms are set up.

This is an excellent place to stay!! The owners are kind, joyful and always available. It's walking distance to the train station; breakfast is Japanese style, fresh, delicious and plentiful; the lodging is completely spotless, from top to bottom! Each room has separate climate control. And, a bonus, if you're hesitant about trying the Japanese public bath experience, they extend a private appointment option. And finally, the room rate is budget friendly. Don't hesitate about staying at Ryokan Shimizu, you will enjoy authentic and amazing Japanese hospitality!!
