It was definitely the most welcoming place I have stayed at recently. I extended my stay for one more night right after the first evening here. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and they truly manage to create a “back home” feeling. I like places where you are surrounded by people but can still enjoy your own space — and this was exactly that kind of place. I would definitely come back if I find myself in Nagano again. And since Nagano is a city full of activities, three days and three nights turned out to be the perfect amount of time to explore and enjoy it to the fullest!

The staff were so lovely and helpful. I wanted to go hiking and the person working gave me really detailed information about multiple places to hike and helped me figure out all the buses/trains to get there. They also gave out maps and have bear bells you can borrow. While I was there, they had an oyaki party and got a bunch of different oyaki for us to try. The beds were comfortable and the luggage storage area with my bed was nice and big. There was AC in my room which was nice. I felt really safe and comfortable the whole time, so I highly recommend!

There’s only one shower, but I never had any issues using it when I wanted. They also have sign-ups for the shower at night and in the morning, so you can make sure to get a shower in.

As everyone said, this is a very special place!! Not only is it beautiful, but everyone is super warm, and the staff is incredibly helpful and sweet. They helped me plan my trip to Togakushi (with the supply of a bear bell and an umbrella which was very much needed), they dried my shoes when I came back soaked from the day (🥹🥹), and gave me some tips for Kanazawa, which was the city I was visiting next. They were always up for a chat and made me feel so much at home. All of the guests I met were also super respectful and sweet. I loved this place and I hope to visit it again someday, for now I’ll just keep it in my heart!!

I liked everything there. Probably my most memorable place of the past 3 weeks of traveling, and the level was high in most of the places I've been. On top is the incredibly nice, helpful, and sociable staff. They gave a lot of advice on what to do, and what to eat around, they like conversation, and even organised a dinner together. It's the type of place that makes you want to stay longer, and regret you didn't book more nights. The house is perfectly designed to encourage social contact, with the main lobby as entrance, and a unique big table in the middle. It's the type of place where everyone knows each other from day 1. It really feels comfy, like a home outside of home.

I picked this location because of the good reviews on Booking and outside of it... They were not lying, the whole female staff are extremely nice and helpful (and as a female traveller, made me feel quite safe). They are passionate about the city and clearly wants you to have the best experience there. the premises are old (it's in an old Japanese city so it makes sense), but perfectly clean. The beds were comfortable. The location very close to the Zenkoji temple was very practical as well. I will keep this place in my bookmarks for sure.

The hostel is not THAT far from the station, but it was heavily raining on the day we went and it made it a bit uncomfortable to get to the train station with all the luggage. It's a tiny detail to be aware of. There is also some buses however.

I don’t usually write long reviews but 1166 bp definitely deserves one. Firstly, the staff are incredibly friendly and considerate. They served me hot tea and snacks as soon as I stepped into the hostel, and then gave very detailed recommendations about the nearby restaurants, activities, public bath and onsens to me. They also provide me with hot bottle (热水袋） to warm your feet every night (Though I didn’t get one cuz the dorm was already quite warm and cozy for me) The facilities are all clean and fresh. I especially love the living room, in which free snacks and hot tea are provided. Also, there is a wall demonstrating the money from travellers around the world and letters expressing how they felt during their stay, which is quite interesting and fun to explore.

I will be agreeing with most of the reviews for this hostel. This is an excellent place to stay for considerate travelers. The staff are all warm and kind, and they go above and beyond as hosts and local guides. The place also seems to draw the most friendly and respectful travelers as well. Everything was clean and well-maintained, and no one was messy or obnoxious. In the old japanese house, it felt like a home away from home. Just remember that this is a Japanese style accommodation, so don't expect too many western style amenities, e.g. some spaces are small, and the bathroom can be cold at night.

I had an amazing experience at 1166 backpackers ! All the team is so welcoming and nice, they welcomed us with warm tea at check-in and recommended us several spots to visit around town. Each morning, we can have fresh coffee and they help us to plan our visits. I could meet many great people there. There is a working space available for guests too. If I come back to Nagano, I will definitely come again here !

One drawback might be that there is only one shower room but you can schedule your time for it and Nagano has some very nice onsen to enjoy as an alternative. We were recommended great onsen by 1166 backpackers team and it was an amazing experience !

The location was great! Next to several bus stops, lots of cute cafes and a very close onsen. Also, the staff were really kind and very helpful! I felt like they genuinely cared for me during my stay and learned alot from them. They also did a great job of creating a comfortable space for the different travelers and the staff to chat and get to know each other. And everything was clean and the beds had the softest sheets! All in all, this was my favorite guest house while I was traveling in Japan!

The house does have some steep stairs - I didn't have a problem with it, but do keep that in mind if you have big luggage or aren't very balanced.

- Great location and staff. Communication was excellent and the guesthouse has a really good vibe. I appreciated the welcome tea and fresh brewed coffee in the morning. It was apparent that a lot of thought had gone into developing this guesthouse. They even provided a card for vegetarians / vegans to show staff at restaurants. - Excellent binder with key sights around Nagano. I wasn't aware that there was so much to do in this area. The binder was organized, comprehensive, and provided a great overview of how one could spend their time. - The space heaters and hot water bottles were great!

- Only one shower, but the staff does their best to manage it by posting a reservation list and not overbooking the guesthouse. I didn't need to wait for the shower, so it didn't seem to be an issue when I was there. - Check in times are from 4:00pm - 9:00pm. The staff does their best to accommodate earlier arrivals, as they did for me, but this may be an issue if one arrives outside of these times especially after 9:00pm.
