The moment I walked in the staff greeted me for check in. Everyone was so warm and friendly. I don’t speak Japanese, so they gave me all of the information I needed about the lovely ryokan in English. I was helped to my room by a nice gentleman. I immediately got into my robe and slippers and enjoyed a beautiful and delicious dinner. In the morning the gongs from the Naritasan temple invited me over. I sat through one of the most memorable experiences of my life…a Buddhist fire ceremony. I can’t describe it, just incredible. I walked the extensive gardens and returned to the ryokan for a filling and delicious vegetarian breakfast, fit for a sumo! :) I wish I could return with my family to show them what a warm and wonderful place Wakamatsu Honten is.

Everything was super.

Welcoming and helpful staff, speaking English and French. Gave good advise on restaurants and local attractions. Breakfast brought to your room (despite the presence of natto, which is an acquired taste). Location in front of Narita-san temple, allowing for an early morning visit before the crowds come. View of the temple from the room.

The rooms start to date a bit - has a certain charm, but at some point might require a little TLC. That everything (including a number of restaurants) closes at 5pm - but that is not the hotel's fault. Just be aware if you want to buy souvenirs.

This ryokan is an absolute gem. The meals were delicious and the staff went above and beyond, especially the managers at the front desk who were true superheroes. We loved the thoughtful explanation of Japanese customs and traditions they wrote out for us. They even walked us to the taxi stand and made us feel like VIPs, even for just a one-night stay. The onsen is open 24 hours so we appreciated not having to plan around closing hours. Our room was huge, more like a one-bedroom apartment, and the view of Naritasan Temple was unbeatable. We stayed here before our flight out of Narita and will absolutely be coming back.

Can’t think of anything!

This hotel is right across from the main gate of the Buddhist temple in Narita! The staff were amazingly kind, and the Onsen was excellent and huge. The building has been a hotel since the 1700’s so the facilities are not the most modern, but everything was clean and complete, and we felt well taken care of. The airport is only a 15-20mn taxi ride and the whole street is full of unagi specialty restaurants if you are interested in the local dish. There is also a lot of other more modern shopping and dining at the top of the hill- though I would say bring walking shoes. Charming!

The location is fantastic. The walk from the station even with luggage is easy, and it’s beautiful. Very interesting signage architecture and business the whole way. Being across from the shrine was wonderful, we didn’t realise what a large or significant space it was and very much enjoyed walking the grounds. You can also walk through the grounds about 20 minutes to get to a shopping mall and Don Quixote which is great for last minute shopping. We would absolutely stay here again for our final nights in Japan. It was a relaxing and comfortable end to our holiday. We enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast and would next stay like to try dinner as well. If you have a morning flights, shuttles to the train are available 8-10am.

We know at booking that we only had a sink a toilet and needed to use the shared bath facilities. We had no issue with this but some may find shared bathing in the buff uncomfortable. Tattoos were allowed which was great.

Traditional style hire with onsen and traditional great food - and the food had an English diagram with what the food was for me. Such a great location. Because of my flight in and out times I had to catch a taxi from and to the airport - approximately $40aud each way. The hotel organised the taxi for me at 5am to get to Narita airport, with absolutely no problems. The stunning and beautiful temple and grounds were literally opposite my room window. I had approximately 34 hours in Narita to enjoy this area and it was the perfect way to get to know Japan for my next 10 days in the country. I arrived on a Saturday night and flew out on the Monday. So I was there on the Sunday and I don’t know if it was just because it was a Sunday but the street around the temple was packed and full of great vibes.

Everything was perfect

The whole experience was amazing, felt like every detail was thought of. The staff was one of the most carrying and people orientated i have ever met. they even offered to make us breakfast after the hours were over, just because my friend got sick and we didn't come down for breakfast. also - even though i was very afraid of the social bath - it was quite an experience for itself as well. also - right in front of the hotel there is an amazing place with temples and a forest park - which was amazing by itself

you can hear the neighbors through the doors

what a lovely place - particularly because of the staff. They were so friendly and very happy to help. We booked breakfast and dinner for one night, the food was very local and plenty. We were beyond full after the dinner. Do be mindful that it is local delicacies so if you do not like very local, traditional fare then it might not be your liking. However, the staff and chef make sure you are well well fed. Great location for a short stay. the park opposite is just beautiful as was the temple.

It’s right across the street from the Naritasan complex. It’s on a shopping street with old buildings. Lots of unagi restaurants. Even with the traffic and the many visitors, the noises were minimal. The bath was wonderful but not from springs.

The breakfast was “shojin ryori”=vegetarian. It should have been stated on the description—“exceptional breakfast “ is written. It was flavorful and tasty but was a surprise. My unagi for dinner was burnt on one edge—inedible. In my 10 years of eating unagi this never happened.

Lovely staff, immaculate rooms, and delicious food. This is my first time staying in a Ryokan, and I felt very welcomed by the staff! I felt like a guest in a 5 star hotel, that's how quality the service was. Immediately upon check in, the staff informed me they could keep my luggage after checkout in the morning, if I wanted to do some sightseeing. The Ryokan is next to an amazing temple, so this was a very kind gesture, as I had planned to explore the temple before flying home. The staff also immediately lent me an umbrella, as it was raining outside. The room was very large, with a warm thermos and tea awaiting me when I arrived. It was spotless and in the traditional Japanese style, looking exactly like the photos. The dinner which I had prepaid with the room, was delicious, and full of seasonal Japanese dishes and ingredients. It was the best meal I had on my trip. The public bath was clean and a perfect temperature, with a selection of creams and lotions to use once you had finished bathing. This was an amazing place to stay for my last night in Japan. If I ever fly out from Narita airport again, I will definitely look to stay here another night.

There was nothing I didn't like. I had a perfect stay
