Absolutely love staying at the Rainforest Motel in Fox Glacier — it’s become a favourite! From the moment we arrived, the warm welcome was obvious: the heater and lights were already on, making the room feel cosy and inviting after a long drive. It’s those thoughtful touches that make such a difference. Special thanks to Andy and the team for consistently delivering a fantastic stay. And of course, a shoutout to Scotty the cat — the perfect room companion! Friendly, relaxed, and full of personality. We always enjoy our time here and will definitely be back. Highly recommend the Rainforest Motel to anyone visiting Fox Glacier — warm hospitality, great comfort, and a little feline charm to top it all off!

The location is super convenient—really close to the main street, restaurants, and sights like Lake Matheson. Easy to get around without feeling isolated. The rooms are clean, cozy, and surprisingly spacious, with well-equipped kitchens and comfy beds. Great for unwinding after a day exploring. Comfortable sofa. Efficient heating. The owner is consistently friendly and helpful, he gave great local tip, which is always a bonus.

Only one luggage rack in the room by default, which can be a bit inconvenient—but the owner happily provides a second one if you ask, so it’s an easy fix. Refrigerator could be bigger and the bathroom could have some hangers.

Despite some of the negative comments on Bookings, we really enjoyed our two night stay here. Our room was well equipped, clean and in good order. The room was quiet and private. Particular praise must be levelled for the shower. Superb pressure, a really large cubicle and the best shower we’ve had in NZ, together with body lotions, shampoo etc. The kitchen came with good coffee making facilities and plenty of coffee pods too. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The location is ideal for the Glacier and surrounding areas. We would happily stay here again if we return to the area.

Welcoming and helpful host who gave us local knowledge. Betsy Jane has delicious food and great service. Very well equipped kitchen and toiletries in bathroom. Gorgeous views. Electric blanket!! Small niggle but had not appreciated the map was not too scale so what I thought was a 10 min walk to Lake Matheson was more like an hour. But we did enjoy the walk but had not anticipated it.

Rainforest Motel was a great stay - very convenient stop on our journey. Reception was welcoming, and Andy came and checked that we had settled in OK and provided helpful information for our stay. Our room was great - clean and spacious, with all the facilities we needed. Prior to checking in, we took advantage of a helicopter Glacier flight with Mountain Helicopters, which was one of Andy's suggestions in his pre arrival message. This was undoubtedly the highlight of our trip so far and unlikely to be beaten. Strongly recommend the property.

Quiet and spacious, really comfortable king bed, well-equipped kitchen, oodles of space, excellent value for money. Great location only a short walk from town. Heating effective and little extras appreciated (coffee pods and chocolates!). In spite of a few minor niggles, we would stay here again.

A little bit tired and in need of some maintenance, eg water damage around shower, runners on sliding door. TV was cactus - couldn't change channels or adjust volume, would just power off/on until we had to turn it off at the wall. Nothing major, though - all the important things were good.

Nice welcome, parking outside, spacious lounge/kitchen area, comfortable bedroom, good heating, gorgeous shower, gorgeous views - had everything we needed! We walked Lake Matheson prior to check in and it’s stunning, highly recommended - also went to glacier viewpoint and both are just down the road from the motel. There is a 2 hour walk near glacier but we missed that as it was raining the following morning.

TV didn’t work except for one channel but it could quite easily have been poor weather conditions!

It was cosy and comfortable with everything you could need to be self sufficient . It was an older room but there were other rooms which were bigger and had been modernised. We walked to the recommended Betsy Jane Restaurant next door and it was lovely. The man at the reception gave us all the details of what was around and where to go and was very friendly and helpful.

It was a little older than we anticipated

Check-in was friendly and informative - showed me a few things I hadn't planned to do but was very happy to know about. Advised me of local shop closing times so I wouldn't miss out and suggested a great local restaurant for dinner. Room was really well maintained and felt like it had been fit out really well for long-term quality. Had a little kitchenette which I didn't need to use but would be great if you were staying for longer. A very short walk to Betsey Jane's for dinner and only a couple of minutes walk into town centre. Parking right in front of room. Super quiet!

Nothing negative to say

Simple but clean motel without air conditioning, but with heating (also in the bathroom), kitchenette, located directly on the road to Lake Matheson and Peak Viewpoint, the two highlights of the townships. Besides the helicopter flights, of course. There are just as many hotels here as tour providers - namely four. Nice owner Andy, daily cleaning, washing machine and dryer usable, comfortable bed.

Passable wifi despite atmospheric influences, but television reception severely limited.
