Last hour booking while traveling, didn't want to keep driving much later. Picked for location, historic significance, ratings, reviews, so first time staying. We love the historic preservation of the main lobby and hotel. Location is excellent to walk to many establishments in Old Town with great character. Was not disappointed and would stay again!
The rooms are renovated from an original 1857 built I think and improved hotel in the 70s and continously upgraded. Not much we didn't like, too small to mention specifics for one short night. If folks are expecting a fancy remake this isn't your cup of tea but keeping history real is cool and friendly spectral possibilities exist.

A small but nicely decorated room with a fairly soft bed. It had a microwave, a small refrigerator, two stovetop burners, and a fairly large wall-mounted TV which let me log into Netflix or Amazon Prime.
The electrical outlets by the microwave didn't work. There were no outlets to plug my cell phone recharger in next to the bed. There was no cover on the thermostat, and I wasn't able to get the thermostat to turn the heat off without manually turning the fan off. I couldn't contact anyone to ask for a late checkout without walking down to the unattended front desk to get the phone number to call to ask for that.

I love the hotel, it's just so beautiful and has so many things to look at and admire.
I don't like the elevator. It doesn't stop level so when you come down you have to step down. When you go up you have to step up to get out. There was an elderly couple and they were on the 4th floor same as me and the woman was in a small motorized wheelchair and was unable to get out of the elevator. She had to step out (she couldn't walk or stand very much) and wait for her elderly husband to try and lift the chair out. Thankfully my husband and I were there and helped them, but I was worried about them the rest of my stay in case they didn't have help.

Carly greeted us with open arms! She was fabulous with a quick check in and provided us with needed information on the local restaurants. She went above and beyond our entire stay and guided us through the whats what in town. Perfect walking location to shops, restaurants. Hotel Parking is located on side of hotel for free with parking pass from hotel lobby. Room was rooming (2 bedroom suite). Very old and outdated, but one night was perfect!
Nothing, fabulous stay at an old hotel with lots of charm and history. Price was right!

Katie, at the desk, was accommodating and helpful. We had issues with the bathroom in our first selected room. She quickly found another room right as the hotel sold out for the weekend! The rooms are simple and comfortable, the lobby is interesting, and the hotel itself is an historic site right in the middle of downtown Placerville.
Being a very old building, the hotel comes with noises related to either pipes or A/C. This was not a major problem as there was little to no noise within the hotel even though it was completely booked.

The Carey house is furnished with incredible antique furnishings and matching dark brown/red woodwork in the lobby as well as large, back lit stained glass window coverings along the wall across from the front desk,. An antique piano and a chess board with chairs and well as chairs and couches filled out the lobby. My room was similarly furnished though they may have been imitation but IDC. I ended up paying for a single room but ended up with a sitting room with two wing chairs and TV as well as a vary small kitchen (two burner stove top, mini fridge and sink to go with the bathroom and my bedroom with a second TV and a comfy bed. The weather was mild so no AC in the room was a non issue but I can see it could be in mid summer. The only minor drawback was the carpets in the hall were not perfectly smooth but the damn building is 150 years old so its to be expected. Staff was very friendly but the front desk closed down relatively early and opened later than expected (seemed to operate from 8:00am-7:00PM although they could be reached by phone. That they locked the lobby doors when the front desk was no staffed was actually a bonus since non guest could not wander around and the room key opened the front door when it was locked. This is a historic hotel with all the look and atmosphere one could hope for at incredibly cheap price ($83.00/night for three nights). I would stay there again in a second. Also several food options within a couple of block in downtown Old Placerville and while most of the food was just OK it was close and acceptable. I even took photos of the lobby to show off to my friends who stayed in other nearby places at much higher prices.
House cleaning was available on request but I suspect that was due to being unable to find employees. I got whatever I needed from the front desk clerk when they were around.

We were in room 305. It was the perfect size for me and my 2 daughters. Loved having the 2 bedrooms and the beds were super comfortable. It all felt so cozy and warm and I can't wait to come back!
Nothing! We kept in mind at all times how old and historic the building is, so we were prepared for how thin the walls and windows are and how outside noise is a factor. We brought our white noise sound machines for the night times and we slept like babies!

Nice older hotel in downtown Placerville. Very clean and well maintained. Staff was friendly and responsive to HVAC and plumbing issues. Good internet access. Windows open!
Older heating/cooling system was hard to regulate. Room refrigerator froze everything put in it. Parking was down an alley to the rear in a shared lot and exposed guests to the elements. Neat displays of hotel's history.

The location was perfect! We walked to the original Mel’s diner for late night fries and shakes and to The Buttercup Pantry for breakfast in the morning. Shops and bars are just outside the lobby doors and it was a ten minute drive to some beautiful wineries. The old elevator was very cool and the lobby staff was very friendly.
The bed moved and creaked all night and the mattress was thin and lumpy. I get using old furniture to keep up with the historic look and feel but not over comfort.

First, the location was perfect, so much to see right in town. Second, it was spotless, the quality of the towels and linens was top notch, the bathroom was super clean. We paid a fantastic price through Booking. The beautiful lobby was charming and full of history. Obviously updated many times over the last century and a half. The historic elevator workered well. Of course it is old and could have used a little more thought in the decorating, but a great place.
There was a lovely little kitchen space but it had only two coffee cups and a wine glasses. Maybe one plate. No kettle, no pans, no silverware.Again, spotlessly clean!
