This hotel was likely once very grand but It seems to have slipped somewhat. Our room was quite functional and clean but could use a facelift The staff at this hotel are all very helpful and we appreciated that they allowed us to bring our bicycles into our room with us overnight.
The breakfast was not good. Granted, it was a continental breakfast but was very lacking. No tea bags to add to the hot water for tea. Only a few sorry looking pieces of white bread available, no whole grain bread.. Only one sad-looking apple in the fruit bowl. No refills of the orange juice picture.

The service was excellent. Special thanks to Deepa who generously accepted many of my special requests. He was also very helpful in carrying my very heavy luggage to the 1st floor (or Level 2) where my room was located. The attendant (did not manage to catch her name) who assisted with tidying my room was also accommodating. The location of the hotel is excellent. Walking distance (in less than 10 mins) to city centre, where there are many amenities and restaurants. If you are staying to go to the University of Reading, there is a straight bus that takes less than 10 mins to reach. If you are one who likes sorting things into storage when you stay at the hotel, then they do have a number of cabinets with many drawers that may be super useful for anyone wanting that. The water flow was good in the bathroom and the temperature is steady and hot - essential for a comfortable bath.
Unfortunately the kettle was filled with limescale. I requested for a change, to which I was given another one - which is still filled with limescale. If you do not mind drinking limescale, this may not be much of a concern. The tap in the bathroom is very low and near to the water basin, which makes it difficult to fill water. Small issue, but may be challenging for people who need a larger space for that (e.g. wash big bottles). I am rather immune to noise, and this is also mentioned on their website - they made it very explicit. So you do get the "noise" on Fri and Sat nights till late hours.

What a lovely hotel experience we had at the Hotel 1843 Reading! The hotel itself is very interesting....it hearkens back to an age of grandeur with many winding staircases covered in lavish carpets and nice comfy sitting areas. Our room was very comfortable with a window that could be easily opened to let in fresh air. We were surprised to learn that breakfast was included in our reservation and it was an excellent breakfast. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The hotel location is perfect, right downtown near the Oracle shipping center and the Kennet and Avon River.

The hotel is very near to the town center, with multiple restaurants nearby. The bus stop is adjacent to the hotel. The staff and hotel manager is very friendly and approachable. Good breakfast option. Room is clean and is worth the price.
There is no lift or elevator facility but the hotel staff helped to carry the luggage to the room, and since it's a one time task it's not a big drawback, unless you have challenges using stairs.

I asked for a twin because my daughter was supposed to come with me. Plenty of room in a well appointed room. Bed was comfy and the room temperature just right. Breakfast was really good, I took it in the library and this room was delightful. It was great being in a building that I had walked past many times in my life when I lived in Reading. So easy to walk to and from the railway station without concern being stuck in traffic. Excellent value for money, next time I will try their restaurant for an evening meal.
Bottom of the bath a little slippy, it had inbuilt grips but they were a bit worn. I expect I could have asked for a bath mat if I was staying beyond my first night.

The hotel is BEAUTIFUL, both outside and inside. Very old school atmosphere, classic with some happy modern elements. The most beautiful I've ever seen, for my tastes. Please, keep it like this forever. It's literally at 3minutes walk from the Reading centre and very easy to go to the train station by walk. Maybe less than 10 minutes
Maybe the floor wasn't so clean, but not dirty for sure, only some long hairs here and there. Matress is very unconfortable, too soft and with a sort of steep toward the left side that forced you to "balance" on the right

The room was well arranged and well lit. The ironing board and pressing iron were provided before my arrival and that was very helpful. I am grateful for that. The beddings were clean and smelt nice.
The toilet and bathroom needs proper washing. The toilet, floor, brush, bath tub and walls also need some deep cleaning. The bath tub had a poor water flow. It looked more like an Air Bnb toilet standard instead of a hotel standard.

Room was nice and clean, bed was comfortable enough and good shower, staff friendly. Great location.
The walls are pretty thin, so could hear the room next door talking at one point. There is no lift and stairs very steep, this should probably be clear on the booking page, had to carry suitcase up two big spiral staircases with only banister on one side, a bit treacherous coming down!!

The great charm of this hotel lies in the extraordinary beauty of the bar, 'library' room, and twinkly stairway....lovely cool Indian artiness, and the delightful and accomodating staff.
The fittings in the hotel room were a bit dated, but the positives above won through. Also, solo women travellers should take a taxi from the station late at night....the route from the train station included a creepy ink dark road - not great.

Great hotel a 15 minutes walk from the train station. Room was spotless and it is obvious the hotel is going through a refurb with signs of paint work being updated and new carpets. The breakfast was basic.....toast, pastries, yoghurt, fruit, fruit juice and cereal...but to be honest it was more than enough for me. Staff were helpful and on hand for any issues.
