This was a wonderful Bed & Breakfast experience. Joao and Graca were wonderful hosts, and gracious about a late arrival. Graca went above and beyond with a wonderful breakfast spread. We were only sorry that we had one night in their beautiful house. Pictures are accurate and the house was exceptionally clean. It was a fantastic location to access the University of Coimbra and the old town. Joao gave a great overview of the area when we arrived and excellent restaurant recommendations. They were very accommodating with storing our luggage and using the facilities after our check out time. Parking was relatively easy with paid street parking right on the same street. Highly recommend!

We chose Republica for two reasons: its location being ever so close to the University and historic area, and its rating by other travelers. The owners greet you and provide you significant information on the 'apartment' and its parking, the locale and restaurants, and the historical sites nearby with great care as he grew up in this his former family home that is now Republica. His wife greets you in the morning with several breakfast options and ensures that things are moving smoothly. While parking can be an issue, especially during the construction that is taking place nearby, we visited on a national holiday and traffic was minimal and parking was free. The history of the property was extremely interesting including its current use as (upper floors) residence for female students during the school year which had just concluded and as a guest house / hotel for temporary visitors / travelers in the several rooms on the lower floors. Easy to see why it is #1 rated on TripAdvisor by travelers!!!

The owner Grace was over-the-top in providing a wonderful & hospitable 3-day stay. We felt more than welcomed - upon arrival, she oriented us to the city and it’s highlights with a map and provided great recommendations for must-see sites as well as restaurants, which were all excellent. She even made a haircut appointment for me, which was one of the best haircuts I’ve ever had! The daily breakfasts were fresh squeezed juice, a variety of fruits, breads, yogurt, cheeses, sliced meats, & eggs - all delicious and kept us going till dinner time! During breakfast, we enjoyed chatting with the other guests from France, Germany, & the U.S. A very charming downtown home that has been in the family for generations - perfectly cozy!

Nothing other than finding city parking was challenging but Grace helped us find free parking just minutes away!

This guest house is beautifully kept in a location convenient to reach attractions and restaurants in Coimbra. The breakfast, including home-baked cake, home-made jam, Portuguese cheese... was so delicious. The hosts of the guest house are so warm, friendly, and helpful. We are grateful that João drove us to the train station himself after our bolt driver canceled our ride at the last minute. Otherwise we were sure to miss the train to Porto. The short stay in this guest house will long be remembered as a highlight of our trip to Portugal.

The República was genuinely a home from home. The house is beautifully and imaginatively decorated with many quirky features, and immaculately clean. The included breakfast was ample, fresh and tasty. As other reviews have mentioned, the hosts – Graça, João and Janet - were incredibly welcoming and helpful. Usually, in seeking to give marks out of ten, one works downwards, reflecting any problems or faults. On this occasion, however, our ever-considerate hosts have saved us the trouble by making our stay totally faultless!

Loved everything about this property. It was the most comfortable rental I have had in Portugal. The rooms were beautifully decorated and so clean and comfortable. Every detail was well thought out. The breakfasts were abundant and included fruits, eggs, meat, cheeses, breads, granola and yogurt. Additionally there was coffee, tea and fresh squeezed orange juice. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful. Janet, one of the staff, was friendly, welcoming and extremely knowledgeable about history and the area. I wished that I could have spent a month in my cozy bedroom with those wonderful breakfasts! I would absolutely stay here again!

Very nice hosts and very good communication all along. Upon arrival, take some 30 min for a generous tour through the house with its many beautiful features and ingenious decoration, as well as many useful explanations about town, where to go and what to see. Very good guest service with open kitchen, fridge, patio and cosy living room, including drinks. Spotlessly clean. Quiet at night although a nightclub is just up the street (and we were there on a Saturday night). Lovely breakfast with homemade marmalade, chocolate cake and eggs. Good beds.

Loved the hospitality of the host (Graca) and the staff (sorry, I forgot her name). Right from the time we reached there till we left, they were very attentive. The lady staff gave very clear instructions on places to see, where to buy tickets, recommendation for restaurants, best way to walk to reach specific destinations, etc. The breakfast was great with a personal touch. Even after our checkout, we could keep our luggage and were also offered tea before we got back on the road for the next destination. Liked a common living room with some drinks left by the hosts for the guests. It makes for a good rest area at the end of the day. The access to the kitchen is also very helpful for those who need it.

A Guest House like no other! It was the second time I stayed at Republica Guest House, and it was as perfect as the first time. It’s for me a sign of excellence, when an accomodation manages to maintain its high quality over time. The room and bathroom are comfortable, clean and spacious. The bedding is really comfortable, and the room gets cleaned up daily. The breakfast is delicious, homemade with fresh and local products. You truly feel at home when at Republica Guest House: the house is arranged with everything you’d need and has a very charming and welcoming atmosphere. Graça and João are one of a kind: they make their very best to make you have a great stay. They are kind, available, welcoming and happy to give recommendations and interesting information about the city.
