Very striking building, with authentically renovated interiors. We loved the reading windows in the drawing room, and our accommodation was very spacious and comfortable (we were in a separate building from the actual castle). The history tour was fascinating, giving us much insight into the history of the castle, as well as special access to rooms and floors which we otherwise wouldn't have seen. Loved the spacious grounds with the family of peacocks roaming about freely - never seen peacock chicks before! Service was excellent, particularly the reception, and we had a very delicious evening meal in the restaurant - proper fine dining. This is an excellent place to locate yourself when exploring Hadrian's Wall.

The choice for breakfast was very good. The staff were very well trained and attentive without being overly so. The Hotel and the grounds were amazing. The organised tour after breakfast was very informative and overall the stay was everything you could ask for.

Breakfast times could have been a little more flexible. I understand that staff need to be able to work at a comfortable level of stress but we witnessed a very empty breakfast area not filled any more at the time we originally requested that we were told was NOT available. Dinner was either fine dining set menu or relaxed dining with a wider choice. We only knew this because of the website. When we booked dinner for the first night online we assumed we would have a choice. We were only offered fine dining. We assumed it was our error. That evening we booked at reception for the following evening and specified relaxed dining this time. The following evening we were brought only the fine dining menu until we raised it. We noticed other guests not being given made aware of the choice

This place is a hidden gem and the pictures don't do it enough justice. I always wanted to stay in a proper English Castle and this castle did it for me. The staff are so attentive to all our needs and nothing was too much trouble. It was a beautiful evening when we arrived and we had a couple of drinks out in front of the castle and it was amazing. They have Peacocks that roam the grounds and they're so timid. The grounds are so well kept, we stayed in the courtyard in Room 13 and it's so peaceful with the huge trees all around the castle. Loved the breakfast it was delicious.

We only stayed one night. You would definitely need two nights to appreciate this place, so we will definitely be back.

In an age where one luxuray hotel is much like any other anywhere in the world this was a fantastic last minute find on a road trip of the North East. A genuine 14th century castle set in immaculate grounds which has been beautifully restored. There are rooms in the castle but we stayed in the cheaper Castle View Annex which is in a conversion from some very old buildings. The room was large, comfortable, spotless and beautifully apointed and air conditioned which was a godsend in the heatwave. Breakfast was cooked fresh in the restaurant which is in the main castle and was delicious. Dinner and drinks were very reasonably priced for the quality of the food and again excellent. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and is really nice to see that the hotel is bringing on young locals who were obviouly enjoying working there and likley to stay for many years. I have stayed in many more "upmarket" hotels with immacualte service and more facilites but they rarely have the "feelgood" factor to make them truly memorable beyond some self indulgent luxuary. This place really is very special combining a wonderful historic setting, comofortable rooms, great staff and good food. We will be back

Leaving after two days

Absolutely perfect location, especially if you like castles and medieval history. The rooms inside the castle were spacious and beautifully arranged. The bathroom was roomy and matched the design of the rest of the castle. The food was splendid. Albeit we couldn't participate in it because we had to leave, a complimentary guided tour through the castle was included in the stay. The mood inside the castle was great and fitting with the theme. The decors matched perfectly.

The only real thing, but that is just because I am very much into history, would be to have proper medieval armour or replicas shown instead of the cheap looking 19th or 20th century copies. Most people won't notice the lower quality of the current armours and I am not necessarily bothered by it either. I just think it would increase the flair and quality of the place even more if the armours and shield would be proper replicas of 15th century armour.

This is a wonderful place to dine, relax and enjoy the wonderful history of the building and surrounding area. Our Castle View room opposite the castle was spacious, comfortable and contained all the facilities we needed. The Castle itself is fabulous. We had breakfast each morning and also dined in the restaurant one evening. The food and service were excellent. An added bonus was the free castle tour after breakfast, led by one of the staff. It was very interesting to learn about the history of the castle and enjoy the spectacular views from the ramparts. There were even peacocks in the grounds which were marvellous. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable 2 night stay.

The one slight negative was some dust around the edges of the room and behind the furniture, which we noticed when using the wall sockets. Not a deal breaker but needs attention.

This is a lovely hotel for anyone who loves castles and history. The hotel is absolutely teeming with history and fabulous decor. We stayed in a dog friendly room which was in the Castle View Lodge so unfortunately were unable to stay actually inside the castle, but ate our meals in the beautiful atmospheric drawing room with our dog. After breakfast and before we departed we joined the included castle ramparts tour which was very interesting and recommended. Our Lodge room had a massive patio style balcony with a great view up to the castle. The room was comfortable and peaceful. Breakfast was lovely and cooked to order. Dinner was from the Fine Dining menu - slightly mixed thoughts about what we had. All staff were brilliant, friendly and helpful.

Although we enjoyed our Castle View Lodge room, particularly the large patio balcony, it did seem a little tired and in need of a refurb. The ‘fine dining’ didn’t quite live up to expectations. Neither of these detracted from our stay - we loved it

What an amazing way to spend our wedding anniversary. If you love castles this is for you, the castle is in great condition and has been maintained very well. We enjoyed everything it had to offer, from the amazing spacious room and bathroom with great water pressure, to the beautiful drawing room and lovely dinner in the restaurant. Then lovely breakfast included in the cost and finished our stay off with a tour of the castle. The grounds are gorgeous with greenery everywhere you look and wildlife like bunnies, squirrels and peacocks. Loved our stay, definitely will return.

The fire door from the drawing room to room 1 kept banging every time someone opened and shut it but other than that our stay was perfect.

Absolutley stunning location, close to Hadrian's Wall walks for those thinking about combining. We booked a room in Castle view, it did have a view of the castle, it was a lovely room, comfortable bed and all the facilities required. We booked ourselves in to their restaurant, the pre drinks in the drawing room set the scene, ( think big fire places, huge sofa's or leather wing back chairs, or indeed the window seats. The staff knowledgable and friendly. The food is AMAZING!!! the portion control at dinner was just right. I really like the way they do breakfast, everything is brought to the table, good selection, no massive over waste. Portions are man sized and we were still full from dinner the night before.... So we booked another night and stayed in the Castle... OMG, what an experience. Our room had a jacuzzi bath, which was so welcomed after a day walking. This place is beautiful, the staff are friendly and the food amazing. We are going back.

Nothing, this place fulfilled my inner princess and my knight in shining armour loved it too.

We had a wonderful meal in the restaurant on Friday night with superb beef pie which are some of the best I’ve ever tasted. However, we didn’t notice that there was quite a lot of dust in the room especially under the bed and also there was snail tracks along the inside of the dining room along the skirting board when we had breakfast on Saturday morning.! apart from those two little hiccups everything else is wonderful. My wife has just mentioned that the extractor fan in the bathroom didn’t work very well cause it was blocked off with dust and gunk which meant that the mirror missed up and the bathroom was a bit like a sauna after a shower.. but these are relatively minor problems that can be fixed relatively easily
