We stayed at the Elk's Head for a night after a family party close by. It is in a nice spot, quiet and everything you would expect from pub accommodation without being exceptional. It is clear that the pub is run on very few staff. Sunday dinner was available but only until 6pm. We would certainly use again if we are in the area.
Breakfast was a little slow in the morning, the chef both cooking and serving but made up for this by its quality. The room we had was above the fans and we had to keep the window open owing to the hot weather and so the room was a little noisy

LOcation was perfect. Being allowed to have my dogs with me. Breakfast was good although presentation of cold buffet could be improved and the weetabix jar just held crumbs when I went down.
As I have the dogs and one is not supposed to go upstairs I would have preferred a ground floor room. If I come again I will book earlier and request this. The stairs were very steep and with the arthritis in my left leg I couldn't carry her as I needed to hold the stair rail. The window was at floor level which meant I couldn't really open it in case the dogs tried to go through it.

The pub and the room give a warm atmosphere, and the staff is very welcoming. We ate there both nights and dinner was excellent. The pub is located in a stunning natural setting with the West Allen River running alongside the back of the property. It was our first stay in Northumberland, but certainly not the last one, and when we return, we'll certainly consider the Elk's Head.
The room could have been a tad larger. Even though we stayed only 2 nights at the Elk's Head, we carried with us luggage for a two weeks holiday, and the room felt a bit saturated.

We stayed a Sunday night and had room 6 which was spacious clean very comfortable. The shower was impressive. Dinner was excellent and i dont use that term loosely, we had the pork loin and it was very tender with massive fresh yorkshire and superb vegetables which included a lovely cauliflower cheese with just enough mustard to make it stand out. Dessert took it to another level with a really great Sticky Toffee pud served with Honeycomb Icecream which was given a further boost having been rolled in more honeycomb. My wife had the Pannacotta, now this was no ordinary Pannacotta being served with Rhubarb jelly, Rhubarb sorbet and poached rhubarb topped off with some light meringue and honeycomb pieces. This dessert sits proudly at the top of the list and it rightfully deserves its place. Staff were great and friendly and clearly the Chef not only knows his stuff but puts his effort into each and every plateful. The staff had to deal with one obnoxious customer and he was handled with grace and patience who just made life difficult, personally I would have told him the kitchen was closed and that he should eat elsewhere.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The evening meal was excellent and there was a lovely atmosphere in the pub. The countryside around is beautiful and it's a 20-25 minutes drive from Hadrian's wall near Sycamore gap. Dogs are permitted in certain bedrooms. The dog friendly room had good access to the lovely gardens and a good size bathroom and a good shower.
If you want to eat with your dog, you need to go into another part of the hotel but that was ok as I put the dog in the car while we ate. In the dog friendly room, the wash basin was a bit too small.

This is a real, friendly, country pub/hotel situated beside the River West Allen in the wooded foothills of the North Pennines. The room was very large, and very comfortable. Before arriving, on a Sunday, we received a phone call asking if we would like a roast Sunday lunch on our arrival ( of course we did ) It was really excellent - Huge, and tasty. This pub is perfect if you love the countryside and great breakfasts.
Nothing at all.

Really friendly and welcoming in a beautiful tranquil setting ideally situated for exploring the area. The breakfast was lovely. Evening meals available although advised to book as the restaurant is popular and busy. We had a meal on our first night which was excellent the menu has a great selection with additional specials to suit everyone. Our room was very comfortable and had a view towards the river which added to the tranquility.
All was good so no comment to add.

Friendly staff. Beautiful location. Clean, basic, accommodation.
Wasn't a major thing but ground floor room got alot of noise from people walking around in their room immediately above and people using the external entrance fire door directly opposite room. Dinner menu food was quality ingredients but quite salty for our taste. Dog owners - there is no immediate, easily accessible, public footpath walk apart from alongside quite a busy road. However there is a very steep climb up a public footpath path close by. Of course within a short drive there are amazing walks.

Great little hotel off the beaten track. Host Jen and Rob were friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The setting is beautiful, right on the river, you can hear the water rushing past. Breakfast is fabulous as is the restaurant, really good food and staff member Holly was delightful. If you're looking for something a bit different and out of the way.. this is the place.

Staff were excellent. Pleasant and friendly. Breakfast was first class. Evening meals were very good both nights. It's really good value for money. The room was comfortable and warm. Very good shower. Excellent location, a bit off the beaten track, but lots of walks nearby and close to all of the key locations on Hadrian's wall. The weather was particularly atrocious, but that was the same all over the North. Racing was unsurprisingly abandoned at Hexham nearby. We will look to return.
Nothing to complain about here.
