Location. Friendliness of staff. Bed. Price. Cleanliness of room. Plenty of sockets.

The creaky floor boards upstairs. I went to bed early as I had an early ride and was woke constantly when people moved about upstairs. I appreciated there is northing you can do about this but it is a niggle, espec when I was confidently told I had was given the quietest room. There was no bike rack, told to lock to a black rail near rhe back door - which was fine until someone parked their car perilously close to my bike. A bike rack would be a welcome addition. These two are just shared in the spirit of "constructive feedback" - they didn't spoil my stay.

Castle and Ball was a great place to stay right in the centre of Marlborough - my first visit. Having a car park was great - the room was great - the wifi was uncomplicated for once! The staff were friendly, the location was fantastic. Breakfast was included but I didn't get up in time so I can't rate it but I bet it was good! When I got up the market out the front was in full swing - 3 punnets of strawberries for £2 !!!

It's a very old building so the floors are all a bit spongy and creaky and you can hear all the movement from floors above. But the noise didn't go on late or disturb me - it just took a bit of getting used to!

We stayed 2 nights room only and the room (number 2), although a little out of date, was fine. It was on the ground floor, easily accessible from the (free for residents) car park and a good size. We ate in the hotel the first night and the food was very good. We also got 20% off as a resident. The hotel restaurant is clearly very popular with locals and was busy. Very conveniently situated in the middle of the high street.

The double bed was only a 4'6" and the pillows were not very soft. The loo seat was very wobbly and when we reported this it was clear that it had been a problem before (just replace it).

Location is perfect. Right in centre of town. Some excellent staff, Gregory (Barman) in particular was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. Very pleasant and helpful lady in Restaurant on Monday evening. Restaurant was fully booked but she reserved us a table in a quiet spot nearby. Had requested a room with as few stairs as possible due to mobility issues. Was offered the choice of 2 rooms. Excellent , clean spacious room. Loved the old beams and double windows looking out onto Main Street. Thank you

Having stayed here before was looking forward to the cooked breakfast. However was a little disappointed on Monday morning as it was not really hot enough (cold plates didn’t help) and poached eggs were hard . Breakfast Tuesday morning a little better as warm plates but once again hard poached eggs . A shame as good quality produce which would have been far more enjoyable if hotter. Guiness on Monday evening was not good. Barman on duty changed it but still not right (my husband has drunk guiness for 30 yrs so knows how it should be ) changed drink choice Windows are really dirty and need cleaning as spoils what would otherwise be a fabulous view !

The central location, in the High Street, was ideal for exploring the town and a great base for walks around it and the room on the ground floor was wonderfully quiet and cosy. I appreciated the free parking on offer but unfortunately when I arrived, mid-afternoon, it was full with people enjoying a meal in the Hotel. Now unlike a lot of people I have a small car so I parked in an area which I felt would not be blocking anyone and certainly not on the yellow box at the top of the parking area. Unfortunately the next morning when I was due to leave a nearby resident expressed her annoyance that I had blocked entry for Emergency vehicles - not that there were any that night.....she regarded me as inconsiderate despite My protestations that there was nowhere else to park - Apologies of course to her.

One room was lovely, the other poor. It was very small and had no view being overshadowed by the domed roof of the restaurant which of course was lit up. There was also a walkway around this and so had to have the blind shut all the time. I thought this room should have been much less money than the other. Also housekeeping missed this room on one occasion.

Housekeeping in general. Lack of attention to detail like not noticing the soap dispenser over the bath was empty. A bit late to discover this when in the shower. Not noticing the milk was missing. Reception, however, was very happy to supply this in abundance when mentioned. Also serving staff at breakfast could be encouraged to use their eyes and hands and clear the dirty plates off the table. A bit off-putting being served the next course while the table is covered in dirty plates.

I was in the annexe by the archway, leading to the car park. Sadly, I was woken a little earlier than I anticipated by people wheeling metal trolleys through the archway, but aside from that, had a good sleep in a clean, comfortable bed. The bedside tables and lamps were a little dusty along with the tv remote control. The shower was very good with instant hot water. The free wifi was a little hit and miss, and I found myself having to log into roughly every 30 minutes. Staff were friendly and professional and the food was good with large portions.

7th hotel in eight days. Three 3 star ones were super, 2 were awful and the sixth with 4 stars was just about alright. This one, dating from the 16th century, has real character and and has to be judged in a slightly different way to the others. It has its own large car park which is free for residents - though since I arrived at a busy lunchtime, I was fortunate in being able to find a space. After after parking, you enter the back door to the bar and reception area. There I got a very warm welcome and was pleased to find that, as I had requested, my room was already available. Though there may be a couple of rooms on the ground floor, almost all are all upstairs. Since there is no lift, so the hotel is unlikely to be suitable for persons of reduced mobility, especially since the stairs are somewhat uneven. My room number, 18, was on the first floor. It had a small entrance area, with clothes cupboard, door to the bathroom, framed mirror and door to the bedroom. This was plenty big enough, with bed, desk, armchair, television and two night tables. In any other hotel, I might be inclined to say it was a little dilapidated but it was clean (though I did encounter one nut and a red sequin on the carpet) and what can you expect in a building with original oak beams that's well over 400 years old. The bed was comfortable and the heating could not be more efficient. The bathroom is also rather dated but has a sink, a nice big mirror, a toilet and a bath with adjustable shower head. There are warnings about the temperature of the water and the taps are not thermosthetic, making control quite difficult. I also don't much go for flexible shower curtains and there were some traces of mould on this and around the edges of the bath. The panel with the lights above the sink could do with being replaced. There's also a towel rail which - quite exceptionally in my experience - is actually hot.

The staff was very friendly and professional. The room was clean. The bed was comfortable. The hotel itself was charming, located in a historic building on the main street (High Street) of the town. The ground floor pub was warm and welcoming with good food and drink.

One of the windows would not stay open because of a broken sash cord on one side, so I propped it open with a clothes hanger. The floor had several soft spots that you could feel through the carpet. There was no lift, and the stairs were uneven, but these things should be expected in a 400+ year old building!

I've stayed here before and was happy to return. Like many hotels the price fluctuates according to demand, and I was lucky to book here for about the same rate as for a well known budget chain that is often found in motorway service areas. The Castle & Ball is in a different league all together so only the price is comparable - fantastic value. Comfortable room, nice staff and a great breakfast. Will be back.

Other reviews mention the creaky floorboards which is noticeable, but given that the building is so old, not unexpected.
