All the staff, from the front desk to the waiters in the restaurant were great! Very friendly and all focused on service. Front desk staff (day and night) were very helpful with booking of tours and taxis. They really want you to have a nice stay. The layout and architecture of the hotel added another a layer of interest. Our room (King Suite, room 52) had a nice view of the valley. We especially enjoyed the restaurant for the quality, ambiance and excellent service.

Not really a great area for walking but it didn’t really matter as we spent 4 days exploring via tours and 1 day in San Jose by taxi (6 miles). All picked-up and dropped-off at the hotel. Windows are only single pane but with only 23 rooms in the hotel noise wasn’t an issue.

Hotel Alta Las Palomas is my go-to whenever I visit Costa Rica, and for good reason—it’s simply perfect! I can’t recommend it enough. The staff treats you like royalty, and the service is consistently exceptional. The atmosphere feels like you’ve stepped into a serene, otherworldly retreat where relaxation is the top priority. And the food? It’s so amazing, it’s worth planning a trip just for that alone. Every bite is so delicious, you’ll want to rave about it to everyone back home! This is the kind of place that keeps you coming back. I also have to mention the spa-like experience each time you step into the bathroom, with high-quality beds and crisp, fresh linens that ensure a peaceful night’s sleep. The rooms are wonderfully quiet, and the balcony offers a lovely view of the city, framed by palm trees. The pool area makes you feel like you’re on a true vacation—it’s the perfect escape.

We had the most lovely view from our private balcony over the glittering lights at night! The hotel has so many beautiful spaces- we enjoyed dining al fresco under the giant guanacaste tree as well as in the beautiful dining room. The design took advantage of the views over San Jose and all the windows could be left open to let in the gorgeous air! The elevation kept it nice and cool! The food was delicious and fresh and the service was wonderful. Would love to stay at this gem of a hotel again!

Good breakfast and a nice pool.

-The mattress was too soft and very uncomfortable. - The lady in charge was friendly to start with and became less friendly when issues were raised -The shower door didn't close properly which meant the bathroom floor got wet -Each time you enter the hotel you need to ring the bell because they don't issue an entrance key. Several times i waited 10 mins for the staff to answer the door.

I was upgraded to a suite and read the reviews about requesting one of these on a higher floor ( I was on the 4th floor). An uninterrupted view of parts of the city and the mountains, awoken to birds singing in the morning - it was amazing. The suites at this hotel are really well appointed, large living room when you enter leading to the balcony. Off to the left, arched doors lead to a large bedroom with views of the balcony, city and mountains. Large walk in shower, large storage and dressing area. The only thing I could slightly fault was the AC in the bathroom wasn't very strong. It was 80+F when I was there and the bathroom was always way hotter than the other rooms (even when i wasn't using the shower). Aside from that I LOVED the layout and facilities of the suite. Breakfast was included and no complaints -pretty standard, well made. I had dinner at the hotel twice and again, tasty food, good quality- no complaints. The restaurant itself is very beautiful, there are long planters lining the inside of the large windows, running the full length of the restaurant (overlooking the pool area) and another set separating it from the bar, a nice added touch. The one thing that was an issue was wasps/ hornets- on my last day I sat near the door by one of the planters and there was a mini hornets nest inside in one of the corners above the planter. As I'm allergic to stings I had to quickly move and pointed it out to the restaurant staff. The hotel decor in the main areas is really beautiful, you feel like you are walking down a little indoor street with huge wooden chests, structured "fairy" light decorations, high-back throne like chairs beautifully decor'ed, long sofas, huge floor to ceiling curtains . At one end it opens into the restaurant and the other end is the entrance. Aside from the beauty of the hotel, the staff are so friendly and kind, they stop and chat, they're efficient, nothing is too much.

Address the mini hornets nest in one of the corners above the planter by the door! For someone allergic to stings that was a little alarming.

Absolutely beautiful property, the lobby and public spaces are something very special and unique. it is a place that clearly has had a lot of thought and love put into its design and build, albeit it is showing signs of tiredness in places. the owner (husband and wife) came out to introduce themselves which was a lovely touch. Swimming pool superb. The restaurant staff (particularly the lady - I forget her name) were so lovely, really friendly and attentive. food was delicious

Rooms need a bit of maintenance - shower handle falling off, insect screens not shutting properly, towelling robes a bit threadbare, all showing signs of age (although beds really comfy!). Receptionists let the property down a little - I think she was quite junior and didn’t really know how to welcome guests - took a long time to check us in and had to call someone else to help with queries.

A beautiful small hotel - elegant, comfortable, excellent and helpful staff. Not in a main tourist hub but definitely good for a night or two in combo with other stays or for work.

I found no fault. But do check location to ensure it meets needs of the stay.

I love this hotel, it's classic style, has lovely floors and wooden windows and doors throughout, you can sleep without Air Con (there's screen doors, natural mountain air - which is a real treat for San Jose). The rooms are calm, cosy and quiet, feel very safe, and the pool area is superb. The restaurant is far above the average for San Jose, and comparatively very reasonably priced - and there's no loud obnoxious music played anywhere which is a joy! The included breakfast is by far the best I've had in SJ. I've stayed here a few times now (I live in Costa Rica) and I will keep coming back. There's always a few little things that could improve (I had an odd lamp that went on and off randomly which created a strange ambiance! I think the electrics in room 16 are a bit odd) and sometimes there's slippers and sometimes not (the floors are lovely natural stone and get cold underfoot in the rainy season so slippers are a really good addition to the rooms). Coffee facilities in the Reading Area could be better. But generally we love it and will keep returning when we can afford to :)

a bit of inconsistency between rooms - strange lamps/cheaper furniture in some; sometimes slippers provided, sometimes not (the floors are lovely and cold!) Coffee facilities in the reading room need an option for milk (small fridge/insulated jug?) so Espresso is not the only option outside of restaurant hours, for those of us who enjoy a regular mug of coffee when we get up (breakfast starts at 7am, so if you're up earlier there's only an espresso machine)

Everything! Wonderful place to stay, very calm and relaxing. Fantastic staff, very friendly and helpful. Food was great, dining room has an amazing view. Everything felt luxurious.

Not super walkable to many places, but otherwise there really isn’t anything I didn’t like about this place.
