The property was lovely. The staff were lovely. The rooms were spacious. The shower worked well but the bathrooms are a little dated. We did not use the pool or gum but we would have happily stayed a fee more nights to use it. You have 4 choices of breakfast and unlimited tea and coffee. It was very good. A local restaurant about 100 metres away was Cafe Roja. Other restaurants are a much longer walk away. The area was not one you would stroll in at night. Every facility in the hotel was close by. It had car parking but we did not need it.
The water was expensive to buy and there was no restaurant or bar, just a paid for coffee station and a water bottle fridge. No alcohol was available.

Great location for museums, parks, art galleries and restaurants. Room was exceptionally clean and staff were welcoming and helpful - lovely people.
Included breakfast was abysmal - selection of 3 sets. The one I choose consisted of 2 toast - no butter or jam, badly scambled eggs (tough and cold) and few small slices of fruit. Coffee very weak. 'Free' coffee from lobby was Britta machine and not free as advertised. Neighbourhood pretty schetchy - hotel front covered with steel fencing and gate - razor wire. Typical of most of San Jose.

Santo Tomas is a historic jem in the heart of San Jose. Once you step into the lobby you can see the detail of the furnishing and finishings have been well preserved. The rooms are comfortable and there are several lounge areas throughout where you can relax and mingle with fellow travelers. The pool and hot tub provide relief after a day of exploring the downtown sites, all within walking distance. The (provided) breakfast is excellent and the staff are friendly and helpful.
There was no complaints with my stay at Santo Tomas

The hotel is situated very close to the centre of San José but is not noisy at night. The location is good for walking to most of the attractions in the city and to the shops and markets. Most of the rooms are large with one or two double beds. The shower in our room worked well and there was always plenty of hot water. There are several areas within the hotel to sit and enjoy the sunsets. The Wifi is excellent. Parking is available within the hotel on Avenida 7. Breakfast starts with a fruit plate and is followed by a cooked breakfast - rice and beans and eggs or eggs and toast. The staff in the hotel are all very friendly and helpful. The hotel does not provide an evening meal, but the Café Rojo is well recommended. On the same street the Alliance Francaise has a good cafe that provides a light lunch if in need. While staying in San José make time for the Jade Museum (information in both Spanish and English) and look out for the Postal Museum which is inside the main Post Office. Everything is in Spanish, but the displays on topics such as space travel, wildlife and calypso, are beautifully designed and illustrated with stamps from all over the world. If you want a local hotel rather than an anonymous American chain, then Hotel Santo Tomas place to consider.
No kettle provided in the room to make cups of tea, but visitors from the UK are used to this in the Western Hemisphere.

Friendly and helpful staff. A very homely stay. Both the room and bathroom were very spaceful. Good breakfast with different options
The neighbourhood. We were warned about not walking in the area in the evening as it seems to have become a 'red district'. Anyway, this situation is easily sorted out by taking a taxi or Uber which offers a very efficient service and it's inexpensive. Despite this, I would definitely stay at the Santo Tomas if I went back to San Jose

The room was nice, clean and comfortable. I liked the location of this hotel. It was convienient to walk to city center or take an uber. There was a market nearby to stock up on snacks, wine, etc. The breakfast area was nice and the food they prepared was tasty. I liked having the various seating areas throughout the hotel where we enjoyed playing cards. They were able to hold our luggage for us while we were touring the city. The staff was very helpful. The neighborhood was fine to walk around during the day. I ventured across the street to a bar for some wine at night and it was fine too. I probably would not have walked around much farther at night though.
I had to take a cool shower one day. It was about 9 in the morning and I guess the hot water was all used up. I missed not having and ice available to chill my beverages, but there was a communal refrigerator to use, but it was very full.

The elegance of this restored historic hotel …the cooked to order breakfast…the location for a pretty walk to central area..the friendly, caring owner and his daughter as well as the very helpful staff….extraordinarily clean..lots of pleasant places to sit outside your room for a visit with friends or other guests.
I loved this small slightly quirky hotel but those who like the flash of a Hilton or Marriot may not

Great location. Everything within easy walking distance. Great secure off street parking. Lovely old building with large rooms. Comfy bed. Loved the hot tub. Great breakfast - both food and ambience. Multiple areas for lounging etc. Gym was an added bonus. Although you are aware of outside sounds the whole place gives an air of escape from the bustle outside.
Communal fridge available at end of corridor. Would have preferred one in the room. Pool loungers dirty and rusty.

The property was a big surprise from the inside, a diamond in the rough, the staff were very friendly, polite and accommodating. It’s a great atmosphere and a great place to stay.
The jacuzzi hot tub was disappointing, the water at night was Luke warm at best, no temp control and no one to talk to. The other major issue were 3 your kids that destroyed the peaceful environment. They were yelling and screaming which made other guest uncomfortable. Frankly it ruined sitting outside and relaxing.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel was a beautiful older colonial building and had multiple outdoor verandas. The rooms were very spacious. But the thing that won our hearts was the pool. After a long day of walking, etc. we'd come back and relax in the beautiful pool and jacuzzi. We were only able to do the breakfast once, but it was very good, standard Costa Rican breakfast.
I feel bad even saying this, because I never felt particularly unsafe, but we had two taxi drivers tell us that we were staying in a rough area. I think maybe it was on the edge of a rough area, but it was very close to walk to any of the places we wanted to go in San Jose.
