Whenever I stay away from home, I like to pick somewhere a bit different, and this stood out to me, the price was very reasonable and the accommodation very quaint. There is an Italian restaurant that opens in the afternoon which hosts a bar also, the cocktails i am informed are really good. The food is lovely. Diana the host of the hotel is really lovely and very engaging, she went above any beyond while I stayed, she made me a slice of toast this morning and even dropped me off outside Sunderland college for my meeting, the hotel is very old but a lot of effort upgrading is clear to see. I will definitely be staying again if I'm ever in Sunderland I'll be contacting Diana, perfect host.

The shower space was very snug, it was ok for a little one like me but even I struggled washing my hair.

I wanted to stay in a 'real' place that reflected Sunderland's past and not a chain. Thus I chose the Boar's Head down by the old docks with a view of the river. Diane was such a lovely person and she was so helpful and friendly at check in explaining everything. My room had the comfiest of beds and was spotlessly clean with everything I needed. I loved the separate kitchen where there were many cereals on offer along with pain au chocolate and different breads and jams etc. Fresh milk too in the fridge and I noted some gluten free options too. There is also a cooker and a microwave so one could have cooked other products one might have bought. It was delightful meeting another couple and a gentleman and having a very interesting conversation whilst eating breakfast. A big shout out too for Irene the cleaning lady that not only was responsible for the immaculate cleanliness of my room but who also helped me use a toaster as perhaps I am unusual in not having one at home! In the evening I met friends and we had a meal in the terrific Italian restaurant downstairs. One could just have a drink in the bar before heading off out too.

Comfortable room, although a little small if there's more than one person staying in it. Bed was very comfortable, quiet location and the best part ..... there's a great and original Italian restaurant right next door with exceptional food, closed Tuesdays though. The hotel is not a traditional hotel but a charming boutique, no front desk but the charming lady owner will meet you there with your keys and give you a guided tour of the place. There's coffee anytime in the breakfast area which also has a small selection of breakfast items. I certainly would stay there again in a heartbeat! There's a few restaurants within walking distance and a good view of the riverfront and docks.

The Host ! She was so so warm. And getting a god host is a very very rare thing these days. This is a shout out to Diana, thank you for all the help. This accomodation is quite far from main city centre, and the city of Sunderland has become very dull.. there's no tesco/sainsbury anywhere.... she offered me a drive to a local grocery store, in quite a remote area, waited for me, while i picked essentials for the night... very very rare these days.. and more off, she offered a free breakfast too... which wasnt offered when i booked. Sunderland is quite a boring place, tbh, but if you decide to come, do give this accomodation a chance

The hotel is very cozy and exceptionally clean. Diana is warm and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble for her! I particularly liked the kitchen area which we used to eat a pizza after the gig we attended at nearby Poprecs. Diana also provides cereal, bread, jams and fresh milk for breakfasts. This was perfect for us as an alternative to the usual big breakfast served early in the day in other hotels. It was particularly nice having tea and toast on the terrace with a beautiful view of the river

Diana was lovely and friendly, very helpful giving us telephone numbers for taxis and telling us what amenities were close by. Loved the idea we could use the kitchen however we had already made plans to eat out.

The double bed in our room was really comfortable however the single mattress needs replacing as it's very flimsy, not sturdy at all, felt as though you were sleeping on the bed base. Also, the seagulls are very noisy on a morning outside. If you struggle with stairs this isn't the place for you as the first set of stairs are very steep and narrow.

Room was clean and tidy and sufficient for our needs, breakfast not served but there is a communal kitchen with bread toast, tea & coffee + cereal if needed - good size table if you want to order a takeaway. downstairs is an Italian restaurant which is also very nice small car park to the side which is free

Stairs to the rooms are very steep and you need to be careful with both the old / young members. You might initially be disappointed with the look of the building but it more than meets your needs and the price is excellent

View on the terrace was stunning. Facilities were brilliant, great to have a kitchen which was stocked with bread, butter jam, tea, coffee, milk and cereals- everything you need for breakfast! The owners were both lovely.

The only down side for us was the walk into the town centre- a wee bit far for what we wanted so we ended up taking taxis. However, I really wanted to try this location as the view was stunning, and it is also nice and peaceful.

This was easily a ten out of ten stay. The hotel was spotless clean and very comfortable. There was tea and coffee facilities in the room and guests are also able to use a shared kitchen area.There is an outside deck area overlooking the river that guests can also use. The towels were good proper sized towels, not always the case in some hotels.

We stayed on a very warm night. Our room overlooked the road and we had to have the window open. A family living opposite were on the balcony until 3:30 am talking and laughing, kids making noise ( yes, kids up that late ) This probably wouldn't bother most people but I sleep very lightly and have sensitive hearing. So despite all the good things I slept very badly.

We had a very pleasant stay in this characteristic hotel in the Old Sunderland area. We were travelling with three friends and had a great spacious room with three separate beds, a couch, a big television and everything we needed. There's no breakfast service in the hotel, but we could use the kitchen (that has a roof terrace with a nice panoramic view) where our frienldy host left everything for us for a continental breakfast. Absolutely a hotel to come back when we are travelling trough the north-east of England again for a football trip.

The bathroom was a bit outdated.
