The location is great -- right on Gran Via -- although prepare yourself, it might get a bit noisy. The hotel is very clean and has a daily room service (which was a surprise). The staff was extremely polite, friendly and helpful. We took the cheapest room and it was really small and old -- so if you want more comfort, it might not be a match. We loved the late checkout at 12pm. Overall, solid value for money.

We know it's a budget hotel so our expectations were not too high. The main feedback would be re: shower head in the bathroom. It was impossible to attach it to the handle, so we had to shower while holding it in one hand -- it's a bit inconvenient when you try to wash your hair ;) Otherwise, solid value for money.

The location is perfect, right into Gran Via with many shops and restaurants nearby. The room was quite dated but comfortable to move around with daily cleaning and fresh towels.

The beds were uncomfortable and very, very stiff. The walls are thin, we could hear other people talking from the reception (who kept us up till 2 am and everyone checking in late/early woke us up).

The position is GREAT! The staff is very available, always, they explianed me the tours available, they call me the taxi to the airport, they are very nice people. Our room is NEW, also the bath, very small but clear (and this it's the most important thing) and there is a beautiful big window with balcony.

There is a strange smell, but I think it was because there are works outside.

Extremely convenient, right on Gran Via, in the heart of actions, friendly helpful staffs, good value for money. Yes, it is a bit older, but it does the job to keep you there, decent wifi, ask for a room at the back, not facing Gran Via.lots of restaurants at the door steps, lots of choices of different kind and budgets.

The staff was very friendly and helped me with everything I needed. They booked a great Flamenco Night and also a city trip for me. I felt like I was at home. Also the room was always clean, and warm. They have hot water in the bathroom all the time. The hostel is in the centre, you can walk everywhere in 5 minutes.

Location is just excellent, everything is near, you don't have to use any transport (except airport). Staff is very friendly and helpful, special thanks for the hot water in the first evening :)). Very simple but clean room, you can find there all you need for your stay - double bed, wardrobe, table, 2 chairs, sockets near the bed.

It wasn't crucial for us but you can hear everything what is going on in the hostel from your room :). And I missed electric kettle in the room.

The central location on Gran Via, opposite Callao metro, right in the heart of shopping and restaurant precincts and above a 24/7 supermarket and elevator all make Hostal Excelsior an exceptional bargain in Madrid. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the lounge area and balconies gave this character-filled hostal a charming family feel.

The lack of usefully located power points. There is only one, high up on a bathroom wall and nowhere near any useful furniture. Also, the pillows were very lumpy. Soundproofing could be improved, with nightly garbage collection noise between 12.30am and 1am. The bigger noise issues come from arrogant, careless guests who seem to have no concept of hotel living.

Location can’t get any better! Right in the middle of Gran Via. Very near to multiple metro stops: Callao (nearest), Sol, Plaza España, Sto.Domingo, Noviciado. Very nice staff and very clean. Had a small bouquet of flowers and when we came back, the cleaning lady had put them in a jar with water. :) We will be back!

Elevator is very small (only fits 3 people), beds were a little hard.

It was extremly central and close to everything. Very friendly and helpful staff in the hotel. Everything was very clean.

Decoration is a bit old and tired. Negative side of being so centraly placed on Grand Via, is that there was a lots of noise coming from the street on Friday night.
