The Angel and Royal hotel was one of the reasons I visited Grantham and I was not disappointed, it is a beautiful old building. My room was on the ground floor looking out into the passageway that runs out to the car park and a back road. It was spacious and clean. Breakfast was good and served on the first floor of the main building in a room with all the fittings of an old coaching inn but with much more, the remains of a "secret" staircase and a spectacular fireplace to name the two most obvious features. The breakfast was not included in the quoted price of the room.

My room was fine but the bed was not that comfortable.

We loved the hotel, even though it's very old it's a lovely building. The courtyard is a great place to sit, chat and have coffee and cake and later have a nightcap.

Unfortunately my husband and I really suffered and struggled to sleep in our room. Reasons being very hot weather, can't control the weather, on the top floor, heat rises, and no air coming into the room and the fan was very inadequate. When we came back to our room at night it was like being in an oven and no air circulating. We were beginning to get a headache because of the heat and in the end we had to wedge our room door open to get a breeze from the open window in the corridor going through our room. Not ideal. This needs addressing.

The rooms are lovely the only problem is found was the tv very dated for having kids. The staff are amazing. Recomed the Sunday dinner though the price is more then id normally pay. The food was was exceptional just like the cocktails. My mum lives around the area so ive stayed alot here, nights are so lovely here great ambiance. Music and bbq in the summer. The history of the hotel goes with the decor. The children loved looking at pictures around the hotel. I really am not keen on paying for the car park when I've paid to stay. But 4 pound for a lovely stay won't stop me coming back.

The breakfast was beautifully cooked with quality ingredients and generous portions - worth the extra charge! Staff were welcoming and helpful. The restaurant was excellent, serving delicious food to a high standard - the cheese board was exceptional. Generally, the hotel is very characterful and steeped in history. It is centrally located. Our room was quiet and spacious, overlooking an attractive cobbled courtyard. The bed was very comfortable. Parking is to the rear accessed via a one-way street. Interesting church and National Trust house are within walking distance, both are worth visiting if you like history.

Nothing to dislike.

Everything was amazing extremely clean. All the staff was so helpful, especially the lady at reception and the night porter The room had great facilities it was pretty much an ensuite .. big bathroom big room I just really was surprised to be honest it was great. Only thing I could say is the interior of the rooms need a little bit of updating because the lobby and everywhere else is lovely but to be honest that is personal preference and nothing at all to do with my experience or stay here. I really enjoyed it. It is about a 12 minute walk from the train station. All the stuff I spoke to you, which is so kind and courteous.

As I said all I can fault is the interior of the bedroom but that is completely personal taste. I didn’t like the colour of it. It’s just extremely dated. But to be fair, the clientele seemed mostly above 50 that I could see in the waiting room so to be honest, you are probably tailoring to the right people lol . The mattress wasn’t the most comfiest in the world, but I wasn’t too fast. That’s just another observation. Everything else was amazing.

one whole day I did not have hot water, staff said there was a boiler issue. did not have hot water to shower or shave, from early morning to late afternoon, had to use the tea kettle to heat water to shave for my daily meetings. requested a concession and consideration on my hotel rate for that day. Reception said that they would bring the issue up in the next staff meeting with management. John Ridley my stay was from March 2 through March 10, 2025

Easy check-in. The bedroom & bathroom were large. Evening meal on the set menu was delicious - best calamari I have ever tasted. Staff on check-in and on evening meal were courteous and helpful.

Up & down of numerous flights of stairs to get to & from room (and I was only on the 1st floor) but understandable in a hotel of its historic age. It was a hot night, unable to initially open window due to the noise of people sitting & drinking in the court yard - aircon would be a major help. Whilst the breakfast was tasty the time it took to receive was long - there were only 4 of us in total in the breakfast room (and disappointingly to receive incorrectly to what I ordered). The flies flying around and landing on me in the bar and the restaurant during the evening.

The friendliness and professionalism of the staff: from reception; those involved in getting beverages and cake for afternoon tea/coffee; the restaurant staff for our lovely evening meal. The comfort and cleaniness of our room. I single out Sam for special mention. Although she was busy with tidying the reception area; she attended to our request for tea, coffee and cake straightaway. We felt welcomed and that our request was no bother at all. Her attitude and professionalism deserves to be recognised and commended by her managers. Thanks Sam! :-)

Late at night/early morning singing and shouting from people on Grantham High Street (no doubt from those leaving the nearby pub). However, we recognise there is nothing that the Angel and Royal can do about this.

You turn off the busy high street and enter an avenue of wonder. Little doors and subtle Christmad lights made it feel like I stepped back in time. Lovely setting . The smell of woodsmoke and comfortable surroundings plus the gorgeous alleyway provide a unique welcome. Staff friendly. Sumptuous bed and very comfortable. Thoughtful additions like pencil and paper, a table and 2 very comfortable chairs. Lots of touches to make guests welcome.

Curtains covered radiator, so had to raise them to get any heat. The room was cold, which was not surprising given we were in the midst of a cold snap, but staff provided a storage heater when I explained it was cold. Still went to bed with cold hands and feet. Heated towel rail on bathroom not working so after a shower guests shiver before diving under the duvet.

After a few weeks of travelling, we decided to upgrade our room on arrival so we could have a bit more room. Due to the age of the building, each room is very individual. The team showed us options for an upgrade, which was really lovely. The room we chose was spacious and comfy. Navigating to the hotel was easy. Parking was no trouble at all. The bar and restaurant were nice too.

4pm check-in. This was quite unusual. Everywhere else we had stayed this trip was 3pm.
