March 2025

I booked a cheap and cheerful guest house, I arrived at a luxury hotel! What's not to like?? The room was clean and comfortable, but I spent most of my time hiking the area during the day. In the evenings I made use of the bar and lounge, where I sat in front of a fire reading in total peace. Breakfasts were good an they catered for me as a pescetarian. They serve light meals in the evening such as paninis etc but do not run an evening restaurant service. The staff were fab! I was there over New Year and requested 12 grapes, which were wrapped up for me with a lovely note. My car broke down on my way home, and they looked after me in the lounge even though I had checked out.

One morning I decided to sleep in rather than have breakfast. They knocked on the door (even though do not disturb was on) to ask me if I was coming down or not. It made me feel awkward...

The Staff.... The staff really could not do too much to oblige with any request, i had a lot of personal dietary needs that the staff met as though it was just normal. This was extremely appreciated. The Food... The food was hot and cooked well, it was also customized to my requirements without any question. The Building.... This is a beautiful Georgian building with period Georgian decor and furniture. It was also noticed that there were several out buildings that appeared to be undergoing restoration, which was nice to see. The Location.... This beautiful Georgian house was situated in the village of Wem, and was central to my visiting requirements in Shrewsbury and Ellesmere.

This is more personal things i believe would make this building better, they are in no way criticisms to the building or owners. The problem on period buildings (especially listed buildings) is that to keep things period is also a little un customizable not to mention expensive. I did have issues getting the room key in the door lock when returning to my room. Again this is no ones fault, but its something i noticed each time. The Hotel would really benefit from new reproduction Georgian double glassing, as i imagine that it must cost a small fortune to heat the building at this time of year (Nov, 2024). But again appreciate this would also cost an initial small fortune to action.

It was the first time that my fourteen year old daughter had stayed in a proper hotel and the experience was amazing! When she asked for hot chocolate with breakfast rather than tea or coffee, nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was served and the toast arrives a few moments later providing staff with an opportunity to check that all is well before they leave you to it! We were shown to our suite by a friendly receptionist who talked with our chatty daughter all the way to the room and made her feel really welcome and happy. When we compared the price of our stay to what we would have paid for some of the large national chains, it wasn't that much more and the amazing service more than made up the difference! On the day that we were due to arrive, we received a telephone call to inform us that a disco would.be taking place until midnight that night and they hoped that it wouldn't disturb us! It wasn't a problem and we didn't hear much of it anyway!

It was my second time staying here. I visit the town because a friend lives there. Before my trip, I kept talking to him to plan ahead and find good places to go out to, like pubs. Since it's England, we thought we should find a place serving shepherd's pie. We both barely found a place in a nearby town, serving vegan shepherd's pie. We even asked them if they can make the original version, which contains mutton. They replied saying the menu will have changed by that time. I told this to the staff at The Rectory via direct messages, they confirmed that they haven't seen shepherd's pie around either, then the manager told me the chef will make the dish just for me and my friend! The same "hunt" happened regarding cottage pie (that one is made with beef) but the one pub we could find, serving vegan cottage pie in a nearby town, simply agreed to make us the non-vegan version. Back to The Rectory: Their chef made us portions that were about twice the size of the aforementioned cottage pie from the neighboring town. And it cost us much less than we expected, about half of what we thought we'd pay. We thought we could at least leave a tip for the favor, but no!

There's little to dislike at this place. Even the room cleaning lady would sneak in while I was having breakfast, to clean the room without me there. Her colleague from over the weekend didn't do that, however. What else should I dislike? That the toilet seat was made of wood, probably capable of holding people weighing 150kg/300lbs? That's a good thing. That they ask you nicely to leave your key when you go out, in case you come back late, so that they know who to expect to come? That's also a good thing.

Excellent breakfast with good full English ( and choice of kippers or haddock too) and good coffee. Staff exceptionally pleasant and helpful. This is a 19th century Victorian rectory with great character so don't expect modernism. Plenty of hot ( sometimes rather too hot!) water . Plenty of parking and we were able to get a light meal in our room when we arrived about 8.30p.m. the first night for which we were grateful. Didn't try the resturant in the evening

Next time would book a full double as the comfy double was a bit on small side but that was my error. Would have liked to try the grand piano as I play!

Perfectly situated, only a 15-minute drive from the venue my cousin's wedding was at. Staff were very friendly and the rooms were comfortable. Good mix of breakfast items; full English, cereals, pastries, toast, yoghurts, drinks. Well attended to. Food was hot and came out quickly.

No major issues aside when we got back at 10:30pm we were told the night porter would let us in. We were outside waiting for 10-15 minutes, pressing the buzzer before anybody came to the door. The night porter did extend his apologies and said he was out back. However, it was fortunate it was a dry evening as I do not think it would have been enjoyable waiting outside in the rain. Perhaps guests could be given a code or a key to get back in if they will be out late?

Nice and quiet Lovely little hotel Only a small food menu but plenty of restaurants a ten minutes walk to the high street or you can order food in and ear in their dining room so there's options.

Very quiet in the breakfast room almost too quiet. Could do with some pleasant background music or something. COVID is no more! so it would be good to help yourself to the cereal and juice ect buffet style rather than order it via table service. Other than that everything was fine friendly staff.

Excellent breakfast served in spacious surroundings overlooking the garden. The staff were very helpful.

We stayed in standard double room which unfortunately overlooked the marquee roof at the side of the property. In our opinion the room wasn't big enough to accommodate the small double bed leaving hardly any room to manoeuvre. A lovely old wooden bed frame in keeping with the property but unfortunately very uncomfortable and creaky Sadley the towels provided had seen better days and although clean they were quite grubby and well worn. We feel that provements in this area are required. Having said all of this, the property is lovely and set in large grounds. Should we return we would book a bigger room.

We found this fabulous building really easily. It is warm, clean, and welcoming. The renovations fit the period of the property, and I loved the textiles and mirrors. Our bedroom was very comfortable and warm with plenty of hot water. Breakfast was lovely. Generous portions and really lovely staff. We had a few beers one evening and a light meal. It was all a fair price, and the food again was really good.

I'm not keen on having to leave the room key behind when we went out and about all the time.

Absolutely everything. Characterful Edwardian building in beautiful grounds with sumptuous interiors and wonderful staff - Nathalie greeted us, carried our cycle panniers up, cooked and served us a splendid dinner and did all the clearing away and washing up. The night porter brought us fresh tea for our early morning cuppa. Eve at breakfast was equally attentive. Somewhere dry and safe for our cycles. Beautiful bedroom with huge bed and lovely bathroom. We felt like landed gentry

Incredibly minor point - we’d have relished some yogurt to accompany our continental breakfast
