My friends and I accidentally discovered the Hilltop Hacienda online during our trip in mid-December 2024. It is located on the top of a hill with a particularly good view. It is very convenient to watch the sunrise and sunset in the morning and evening. It's affordable and has multiple rooms to choose from, suitable for couples or singles, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. It has all the daily necessities you need,The most noteworthy thing is the owner of the manor, who is very warm and friendly. He not only provides the living room, kitchen, and dining room, but also provides free food. You can enjoy all the food in the refrigerator in the kitchen, including eggs laid by cage-free chickens on the farm. There are also first aid and commonly used medicines in the cabinet. All in all, we felt strongly at home from the moment we walked in the door. Although our stay was short, Hilltop Hacienda left us with warm and comfortable memories. We all expressed our willingness to visit again, and we must arrange to stay a few more days. Thank you, Hilltop Hacienda!

This destination is more for couples than it is for children. I had reservations, it took me over an hour to find it due to the fact that it was dark out. There were no signs or lights to guide you there. I finally called the owner, Roman & he guided me in. He is currently undergoing renovations. I had my 9 year old Granddaughter with me. Roman was a very nice nice man. I have to say none of this review has nothing to do with him personally. But, I had no idea that we would be staying in his home, upstairs. I thought they were small cabins. Once he went down stairs my Granddaughter got upset, she was scared to stay in someone's home. We left and got a room elsewhere. But, like I said, it's not his fault that my Granddaughter was scared, he was very kind. We couldn't see the entire property because it was so dark out. I'm sure this place would've worked out wonderfully if it was my husband and I going. I think he needs to have lightning at his entrance and a sign & I also think he needs more lightning outdoors. I didn't get a full refund, but I am still waiting for my 50% refund.

Lack of lighting. Staying in someone's home with them

The location, the scenery, the host, the private access, the chicken, the deer, the solitude. It was a great value for a last minute trip and I enjoyed being able to have the quietness of a house instead of the bustling of a hotel.

The shower room needs a little love, and the doors to the outdoors have some gaps due to foundation issues, but all the doors locked and I wasn’t bothered by it. The power to the tv would go out about every 10-15 minutes and would restart. (That only happened for a brief time period). I think maybe that portion of the house was on a power saver setting because the AC and the fan would also slow down at those same intervals.

Share a beautiful home with a nice family. We had the upstairs bedroom that has an amazing deck where we looked at the stars at night and woke up to a gorgeous sunset. The hosts were very generous with drinks and snacks. We were welcomed to use the pool anytime we wanted. We had a great rest as soon as we got there and the house was actually very quiet the entire time. The room has an additional mini split air conditioner, which was great for my wife because she likes it very cold at night. The room also had eight large flatscreen TV, the en suite bathroom had a large soaking tub which we didn’t use although very beautiful and double vanity sinks which we found very convenient. If you are looking for an updated hotel, this is not it but if you’re looking for a nice quiet place just outside of San Marcos on 2 1/2 acres with deer at night and free range chickens throughout this is the place for you. We will be back.

Location and price were excellent. We had 6 people in our group and this property was able to accommodate us with beds to spare. We loved the chickens, wildlife, cool breezes, and the ambiance in general. We were out on one of the many patios or in the pool for the entire stay other than sleeping. I cannot emphasize enough how amazing the views are!

Okay, I’m going to be real here… nothing in the listing indicates that this is a shared space and that a family lives here full time - think “shared space” as in you may be in the kitchen or outside with family present. Roman and his sweet little family were so kind but had I known in advance, we would not have booked this place. That said, I will definitely book this place again because their presence in no way interfered with our visit. He also left out bottled water, fruit and cereal and welcomed us to anything that was there. I will say the place is dated and there are construction materials all around. There are also a lot of steps but that wasn’t a problem for our group.

My husband and I went here for our 14th anniversary and couldn’t have been more happy! The property was absolutely GORGEOUS!!!! The room was beautiful, comfortable and the view from our private balcony was beyond amazing! The owners was also AMAZING! So hospitable and welcoming! We live in San Marcos and this is definitely gonna a place we go for at least a night once a month!!!

The location is on top of a hill and the balcony room has a gorgeous view to wake up to! The property is spacious and the owner was very friendly and even cooked us breakfast! A great experience if you are open to a more traditional Bed & Breakfast! We rented out two rooms, one downstairs and one upstairs - everyone absolutely loved it!

Nothing. Just know that you will be staying with the owners and you will likely hear some roosters in the morning!

Great host, though not shown in the price I had access to the family fridge with all the basic essentials plus numerous cereals and milk at no extra charge. This is an older property and the owner is refurbishing but imagine a family home that has had a generation worth of use. That is what you get here lived in and a bit dated but very comfortable and welcoming. Plenty of local wildlife includingh nightly deer visits but this is in the hills so expect the occasional scorpion leave them alone and they will leave you alone

As I have said a few area need TLC in my room it was hard to drain the sinks as the lever to raise the plugs did not work.

Hilltop Hacienda exceeded my expectations. The place is remote enough that you’re in touch with nature but not too far away from the city attractions and amenities. Roman, the host, is super friendly and made sure we were comfortable during our stay. Our host had basic groceries ready to share with us, fruit, water, cereal and all the breakfast basics! The beds are great, very comfy and clean! Overall, if you’re a nature enthusiast book this place! My kids even got to feed a deer & we saw a red cardinal. We’ll be back!

The pool is very welcoming and inviting but it’s super deep, so make sure you’re an avid swimmer.

The host, Roman, was very welcoming and accomodating. He chopped up fresh watermelon for us and had plenty of food options in case we wanted anything from the kitchen. The rooom beds were so comfy that my mom, who can usually never sleep well anywhere, even her own room, slept 9 straight hours! The gardens, the hilltop views and the birds and passing deer added to the peacefulness of this location that is very tranquil. The room had an attached bathroom with a huge walk in shower, private camode and sink, two beds (Q and F), private entrance from driveway and private exits to pool and to the common areas of the house. We loved it and we will return regularly to this rental to visit friends and family in the area.

The temporary construction around the pool area made direct access to the pool from our room closed off, but once this is finsihed, it will be my favorite room to rent. The route through the common area of the house made the pool very accessable either way.
