This place is enchanting! Absolutely stunning views from the terrace, lovely, quirky and quaint "cave" suite with modern facilities tastefully fitted in to the carved out rock structure. Plenty of choice for breakfast, with the fruit picked straight off the trees on the terrace and a very sweet owner. You can't drive up to the entrance because it's up a steep staircase of a path but there is parking and a bus stop just at the bottom so no problem.

It wasn't a problem for us because I was delighted to practise my (terrible) Italian but the owner doesn't speak any English and nothing is translated. Also, Matera has mosquitos so bring bug spray - we were bitten to death!

Everything was a great and different experience.the Il carrubo, is situated in the center of Matera .it is at a short distance from everything you want to see and walk, in this lovely town.When you arrive, it is easy to find the place due to the good and fully detailed directions which we were given.the breakfast was really nice.italian!!Gianni, the one in charge, was very helpful,polite, full of joy, and always there to surve and help the customers and give to us all, information about the city the history ,as well as the things to do in this amazing place, Matera!!!

Really interesting property on a 20th century road around the sassi. Room very spacious. Gianni, the host, is a passionate lifelong Matera resident and leads walks through the town and local area.

Communication wasn’t always the easiest, and wifi is very poor, for those concerned by this. There was a lot of noisy building work outside so not very peaceful. This party is no reflection on the property at all, but purely to pass on my experience; public transport on and out of Matera is rather difficult. Take extreme caution with the Freccia link bus, as basically nobody in the town knows where to catch this!

If you're staying in Matera, you have to stay in a rock house! Il Carrubo has been really tastefully renovated and brought up to current standards. Excellent bathroom/shower, spotlessly clean, lovely bed linen & towels, really comfortable bed and a quiet location convenient for the shuttle bus which stops right outside the property (you can't bring cars into the historic town). Our bedroom - and one other - are not in the main part of the house - these were probably store houses - but a short flight of steps takes you down to the front gate with reception and breakfast area/terrace with lovely views over the gorge. Breakfast was perfect for us - Matera bread on offer too - and great coffee! This is not a hotel as such with a constantly manned reception but we had a WhatsApp number to contact the owner should we have any issues (which we didn't once installed) and although he doesn't speak English, we managed with texts and Google! He very kindly rescued us from the car park outside the old city as we found there were 3 in the recommended area - one at 5 euros/hour, another at 1 euro/hour and finally a free one where thankfully we were able to park. If you stay here and you're driving, do be sure to think about parking and check where exactly to go.

We loved this place and can't think of any drawbacks - as with all Matera, bear in mind the steps and potentially slippery surface should it rain! Highly recommended!!

Nestled at the very top of Matera, you'll find the Il Carrubo residenza Walk&Stay B&B. It's important to note that you can't drive directly to the B&B with your own car. However, there's a parking garage just a 15-minute walk away, making it convenient to stroll through Matera to reach the B&B. A word of caution: the tiles can be quite slippery. While sneakers manage well, leather sandals can be a bit treacherous. The room itself was beautifully designed, with comfortable beds and a spacious bathroom. The breakfast was simple yet delicious. Above all, the hospitality upon arrival was truly warm and welcoming. Highly recommended for a genuine Matera experience!

Lovely accommodation in the old part of Matera. Lovely breakfast provided, which is a great start to the day. Perfect location for sightseeing. Information provided on the day with directions on how to get there and check in.

Such a beautiful labour of love! The room was superbly presented - authentic caveso with modern comforts so sensitively achieved. Location was exceptional as were Gianni and his fabulous receptionist and breakfast host extraordinaire, Angela. She answered sooo many of our questions. I would happily return to this incredible property.

I liked everything but wi-fi in the lower floor room was difficult- of course, we were in a cave! perhaps a kettle for tea etc would also be nice.

Great location, within walking distance from where we parked the car, close to restaurants, and with a great view from the front door. The room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was also great, with savory options as well, which is not all that common in Italy. Would definitely stay there again.

All was good. Gianni was an excellent host. We learnt a lot about Matera through his profound knowledge and love of the place. Thank you, Gianni! P.s: we stayed 3 nights, the bare minimum to visit this wonderful place.

The room is situated within a large rock. The location is in the Sassi. People with walking disability may have a hard time with the steps needed to climb to reach the office and rooms. The owner, Johnnie spoke very little English but he was very kind to pick us up outside the Sassi since our driver couldn’t get us there.

The room is small but was perfect for my husband and I.
