We did lots of research on Matera before visiting and chose Cenobio mainly for its fantastic location and comparable value for money. The staff are all friendly and cannot do enough for you. All of the rooms are well equipped, with the range of rooms offered giving options on price points. We had a standard double room and also the hot tub suite, both were great! Breakfast was varied and a hot selection on request which was appreciated. The location was perfect, a few minutes from the cathedral square but also a just few steps down to the road around Matera with some great restaurants. The views from the hotel were stunningly beautiful. We could not fault the hotel and would recommend it as a wonderful base to explore Matera!

Just to note the suite with hot tub is completely open, there is no bathroom door or curtain for privacy. Also, the air con is unsurprisingly limited by the cave rooms structure so does not get fully cold.

The most magical experience staying in an updated, modern cave. The hotel room was large and well appointed. The uniqueness of the lodging is unforgettable. Staff was lovely and very helpful. Private spa for a fee was wonderful- I love the idea of a private space. I don’t mind a fee to have the space all to ourselves.

The public steps to get to the hotel could be a bit slippery. But honestly the magic of Matera and this amazing hotel is too good that anything negative is forgiven.

Location and staff were awesome. Especially Sammy who helped with pretty much everything from carrying our very heavy bags through the hot streets of Matera or translating our every request. The taxi driver picked us up from random locations as requested and helped us with picking finding post offices to try and send luggage - he was also such a lovely personality. Please treat them well!!

The spa devices should be included to give it an extra edge. Including it in the name doesn’t make sense if you are just charging extra.

Excellent location, clean, comfortable, authentic, great value. Associates are friendly, but special mention to the night manager, Mario. Mario is like the Italian uncle that everyone should have. Great sense of humor and entertaining. Breakfast offered is adequate.

Could have used a coffee maker in the room, but thought that it is a historic site and maybe the absence of one was precautionary.

The room was spacious and comfortable. It was a real feast for the eyes. We have not stayed in a nicer hotel. Everything is thought out down to the last detail, authenticity intertwines with comfortable modernity. You can even see fossils in the ceiling and walls! Very comfortable bed, amazing shower and spa bath. The front desk is staffed by wonderful and helpful people. They can order you dinner at a selected restaurant, excursions, etc. We were particularly impressed by the breakfast buffet lady. Her warmth and smile made the all days special. Thank you very much! Shower facilities could be replenished more often (we stayed 4 nights). Could also be a couple of simple wine glasses (we only found two plastic ones, which were later thrown away by the maid). It doesn't matter if you choose the hotel for one or several nights, it will definitely not disappoint you. Both a great location and an exclusive interior and warm staff.

The experience in Matera was as expected. The rooms were very spacious and the bed was clean and comfortable. I don't usually spent much time in the rooms, but since I travel for photography (and to acquire life experiences) I always aim to get a room with a desk so I can work a few photos at night. This was not possible in Matera. I did not get the exact room I saw in the photo when I booked, but the one I got was fine for the amount of time I was in it.

the configuration in the bathroom (very little room to have your own toiletries) but it has the right water pressure so it compensates.

The location, the staff and in particular the room with the jacuzzi!

The staff was so kind. The rooms were beautiful. We arranged an airport shuttle through the hotel. The driver stopped at many viewpoints in Matera before bringing us to the hotel. He and his colleague were so excited to share the history with us. There were a lot of steps to get to the hotel and they carried our bags for us. They definitely made it easy! Great hotel.

The room got a little too warm in the middle of the night. But everything else - fantastic!

Although our stay was only one night, we couldn’t have been happier with our experience at the Cenobio. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. From booking us reservations at restaurants to organizing parking for us, the staff made everything extremely stress free! Ask for Betty or Mario! The location couldn’t be better in terms of sight seeing, shopping, restaurants and bars. We will definitely be back and for a longer stay next time!

From our one night experience, I can’t think of anything that could have made it better. We found the room was a little warm for sleeping but that is a very small issue that didn’t truly effect our stay.

Location and view of Sassi was perfect. The staff were all exceptionally friendly, willing to help with anything we needed, the beds and pillows were extremely comfortable and promoted great sleep, towels were plentiful, the shower was a full size, they provided cold bottled water, the breakfast was fresh and tasty...I just cannot say enough about this hotel!
