This facility was conveniently located right by touristy stores, eateries, and the train station. The attention to detail with the food (dinner and breakfast) was impressive and the baths were clean. We arrived at around 5pm, checked in (staff there speaks English), informed Yuki-san (person in charge of our room and meals) the preferred times of our meals and headed out to explore the neighborhood. Given the times for the baths and meals, the experience is really about enjoying the meals provided and relaxing in the baths and the room because there's nothing else to do. Suggested breakfast time was 7:30-8am, which allowed an extra quick soak in the morning before the 11am checkout time (grateful for this).

We noticed a cobweb at the doorway of our room but it wasn't a big deal though.

The entire experience was off the charts Fabulous. The traditional Japanese rooms were very cool, with large opening windows overlooking the river. We booked a private open-air onsen, also overlooking the river, which was a great experience. But, by far, the most amazing part of the stay is the fish-forward 20-course dinner and 15-course breakfast served in your room. Every bite of food was absolutely delicious. We'd read the reviews from people saying to come hungry, so we were careful to starve ourselves all day in anticipation of the feast to come. My wife and I travel to eat and have had amazing meals in 60+ countries, and this stay and food experience ranks in our top ten. That said, if you're a steak and potato person, this may not be your thing. To summarize our experience, we agreed we'd hit a home run after taking in the onsen, but decided we'd hit a grand slam after eating our fabulous meal.

Outstanding hotel with very kind staff and excellent location. The beds on the floor were very comfy, and much more padded than other ryokan sleeping mats we had experienced on the trip. Location was perfect for train and bus access. Lovely view of the river from the room. The food was incredible and had so much thought and skill put into it, and the staff looking after us were so kind. Not a criticism, but the food was actually a bit much at times as many of the dishes were beautiful traditional cuisine, but I felt bad that I couldn't stomach a significant portion of it. The meals were amazing but there were some 'challenging' dishes for people not familiar with Japanese cuisine. No 'western' breakfast/dinner options which was great for an authentic experience, but just a heads up to people with particular dietary needs.

The pictures of the onsen on the booking.com website are a little misleading as they are actually depicting the private onsen which you have to pay extra for and are much smaller in reality.

It was very easy to get from the train station to the hotel which was welcome after a long day of travelling. The hotel was spacious and very clean and the staff were helpful and responsive. The room was great with a lovely view to the river and surrounding forest. The bath on the balcony was a lovely feature that we enjoyed. Dining each morning in our own private dining room was a special treat and the room service staff were extra kind and welcoming. As it is in the middle of town, it is an easy to walk to lovely nearby restaurants (highly recommend the pizza place just outside) and convenient access to the astonishingly efficient public transport to get to all the area's incredible tourist attractions.

The hotel has no laundry services and cannot offer any solutions within the town area. This was surprising and a little disappointing especially given the price we were paying.

My most special stay in Japan to this point. A traditional Japanese style room, spacious beyond anything I've encountered to this point. The arrangement, between the tatami mats, low dining table and futon bed were all more comfortable than I expected. Capping this off was the room being set against the river, visible out the window and providing a wonderful ambience. Facilities were a bit on the old side but clearly cared for. I enjoyed the kaiseki dinner and breakfast, which were filled with foods and flavors I had never encountered. Sachiko-san was patient and understanding with me and did her best to explain the meals to me, despite the language barrier. All in all, I appreciated the service I received while I was at Suimeisou. The onsen was a wonderful experience, with me getting the open air bath to myself thanks to the subpar weather the night I stayed. I also enjoyed getting to wear a yukata, though I probably needed a little help putting one on correctly. Lastly, the location is very accessible, being almost adjacent to the station. No worries about dragging your luggage around or arranging for transport. Lots of restaurants and shops nearby, though you won't need the former if your booking includes the meals, which I recommend.

As a solo traveler, it was a little expensive (it is Hakone, after all). I could also see some being bothered by the open air onsen being set against the river, as it doesn't offer too much privacy. Should also bear in mind that Hakone-Yumoto is a fair distance from most of the sights in Hakone, which combined with the set times for dinner can be a little limiting in what you do on a given day. Be sure to arrive in Hakone early.

1. Location - So near to station. You can easily walk. So many food options nearby. Highly recommend the pizza place next door. 2. Property - It’s an old property but excellently maintained. Nothing was broken. Everything worked. The baths both public and private were of very high quality. Looks like enough attention is being given regularly to keep this notoriously breakable things in working order. 3. Cleanliness - Everything was spickingly clean. No dust or unkempt surface anywhere. 4. Staff - Extremely courteous and helpful. They take care of all your needs. They will setup the room in sleeping configuration at night and then restore it back to living conditions in the morning. The morning breakfast that they served was exceptional and very tasty.

Some may crib about a few strict rules regarding how to behave especially with tatami mats around, but that’s common sense and perfectly understandable.

A very traditional Japanese ryokan. Very clean with tasteful decoration. Excellent dinner and breakfast, but menu very Japanese: great for those who know what to expect or those willing to experience different tastes and ingredients. Beautifully presented. ( I am glad I didn't have to do the dishes.) Very close to the station. Onsen overlooks the river, but not as picturesque as some mountain ryoksans. We asked for double futons and slept well.

Very costly, but still reasonable value given the experience. Be aware of the nature of traditional Japanese rooms before you book. No chairs!

2 minute walk from trains and buses , but backs on to the river so I there is a very relaxing soundtrack!

We purchased the half board (breakfast and dinner) option for our 3 nights there and although the food was unbelievably good, it was quite regimented in how we took these meals (eg breakfast was either 730am or 8am and dinner was either 630 or 7am. For people like us who are on holiday, we preferred more flexibility with our meal times. Also, the only option was eating in our room. Although the staff were really lovely, it did feel strange to us having someone serving us in our bedroom! There are some good restaurants close by. The onsen is really awesome at this hotel as it has an outdoor one also.

Location is excellent. Just a short walk from Yumoto station. Great for those who doesn't drive and rely on the free pass to travel round Hakone loop. Many shops around the area. The pizza restaurant serves excellent pizza and tiramisu. The traditional breakfast and dinner are great even though some of the dishes served are not to our liking which I think is our individual preference. Will stay here again if come back to Hakone

We loved our stay here and would highly recommend! We checked out several places before picking this one and we were extremely happy with the choice. Perfect location few minutes away from the station. The japanes room with private onsen had a lovely view on the trees and river and we could enjoy the bath in full privacy. The room has the traditional nice style but a bit more modern and very clean. The dinner included a lot of food as well as the breakfast (that we enjoyed a bit less because not fully used to this food in the morning). Would definitely go back!
