It's a very well located medium-sized ryokan. Professional and friendly staff. Free sake during the day.

The onsen facility is beautiful, entirely made of wood, but unfortunately a little bit small, it felt cramped when 3 people were there. The outdoor tubs were also a bit small and didn't add much. The meals were good, however for one dinner / breakfast cycle I thought there was an awful lot of salmon. It's not my favorite fish and it is all imported to Japan, so I felt like it would have been more interesting to have a selection of local fish. Room was decently sized but on the smaller side, and interior amenities were not brand new, which at the end of the day is not a huge problem.

This property was amazing! If you are looking for an experience staying in a Japanese Ryokan this is it! My husband and I arrived via the Hida Express train from Nagano. The hotel is an easy walk from the Takayama train station (less than 10 minutes). The staff was incredibly kind & hospitable making us feel like we were at home for the entire stay. My favorite part of this stay was the private soaking tub in our room as well as the public onsen available at the hotel. I left feeling relaxed! Thank you for a lovely stay at your property. Excellent location, friendly and welcoming staff, well-maintained facilities. I loved that it had the feel of being a little older rather than super modern. The Onsen was fabulous and the decor throughout the ryokan was very aesthetic. Just a warning that very little English was spoken by our host - this was our first ryokan experience so we needed instruction, but the communication wasn’t a problem for us. She was so nice and did her best to get across the instructions to us.

Everything! This was the most beautiful ryokan with wonderful staff who were welcoming and attentive throughout our stay. We had breakfast and dinner in our room and they were both superb - beautifully presented, exceptional tastes and served gracefully by the staff. A true delight! The amenities were comfortable and the onsen beautiful with both indoor and outdoor baths. The hospitality of Ryokan Tanabe is exceptional - if you are looking for a great ryokan experience I highly recommend staying here.

Nothing - except that we had to leave!

Our stay at Ryokan Tanabe was one of the absolute highlights of our trip. The staff were so charming, welcoming and attentive. The building is very traditional and beautiful, and the onsen was fabulous. The dinner and breakfast were so beautifully prepared, and we were especially grateful that they accommodated us as vegetarians. The vegetarian breakfast in particular was one of the best meals we had in Japan. We sadly could only stay one night but it was amazing and we highly recommend to anyone wanting a traditional Ryokan experience in this wonderful part of Japan.

Dinner and breakfast served to us in our room -- great!! Onsen -- loved it! Used it twice while we were there. Everyone who served food, set up the futons, showed us around -- all were wonderful. It was a highlight of our trip to Japan.

It wouild have been nice to stretch out and rest in the room after travel and lots of walking, and I did that, but there was on the mats on the floor to stretch out on.

This is a ryokan. It's a different experience from what an American or Europaen would expect from a hotel like this. There is an onsen (Japanese mineral bath) and the dinners and breakfasts are served in your room. I've stayed in many ryokans and this is one of the most traditional and best. They maintain the property with excellence and we've stayed in this particular ryokan 5 times over the years. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants a truly traditional Japanese experience.

The size of our room was great! Our 2 breakfasts and dinners were delicious and very filling. The location was central to everything that we wanted to visit and see We found we needed two futons rather than one (but the staff were very accommodating and this was no trouble)

The male onsen was quite small if multiple people were attending compared with other hotels we stayed in.

Everything really. The staff is so helpful (I asked for the ingredients of a sauce we like and they printed us a recipe, how cute). We have a massage there. So good. In your room and even good value. Dinner is in your room and they make your bed after. In the middle of town. Amazing place !

Bit hard to find where it is from outside but that is most things in japan. I loved everything. Maybe onsen a but small but even. One of the best place I stayed in japan.

Room was lovely and traditional, though not the most comfortable futon beds we slept on during our Japan trip (ask for a second futon mattress!). Location was great -- easy access to train/bus station as well as old town and morning market. Onsens were traditional - one inside (hot spring) and two small (heated water) tubs outside. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

We did half board with all meals served inside our room. This was not the best kaiseki experience we had, and we found the food to be fine, but not exceptional. There are so many cafes and izakayas nearby that it was a shame we had to eat in the hotel.
