Stayed at this hotel before. Our room was excellent, with both bath and shower which suits us both, plus a nice (sunny) balcony with good chairs and table. The breakfast selection was very good, but the option to sit outside on the terrace makes breakfast one of the best times of the day. We ate in the hotel Taverna Grill one evening, both food quality and service were excellent.

Arrgh, the hotel WIFI is extremely poor as it has been for years unfortunately. Like before, we received better (but not great) WIFI service by using the WIFI from the nearby Reids Hotel. Also, every day there were a number of vacation club touts who harass you outside of the hotel. Did not encounter these folks anywhere else in Funchal, just around our hotel.

Despite being fifty years old the hotel is generally still in excellent condition. I assume there have been renovations over the years. The pool is lovely and the location is excellent with Funchal just a twenty minute walk away. It's great the area where you can swim in the sea is a small 'harbour', which offers much better protection from the waves than their neighbour hotels. For those (like my son) who are into Ronaldo, his house and museum are a ten minute walk away. The staff are incredible and simply cannot do enough for you - everyone from the reception staff, the waiters, the pool boys, the people that fix things and even the cleaners.

If you look behind the scenes, there are areas that could do with some shining up. The whole section by what used to be a tennis court is quite tired and the lift down to the sea-side pool was broken for some of the time we were there. Why on earth don't they fix the tennis court and make it useable instead of just being an eye-sore? We had planned to use the running machine while we were staying at the hotel, but they were both broken when we arrived and stayed that way throughout our eleven day stay, despite the reception staff assuring us on the first day that they would be fixed. Finally, please add some differentiated rubbish facilities in the hotel and by the pool. So many plastic bottles just ended up in the bin with all the other rubbish.

Excellent location, a short stroll to the marina. The breakfast was very tasty with lots of options and a lovely outdoor balcony. The outdoor pool was great.

The car park is extremely tight and difficult to navigate down the ramp which is frequently blocked by something and you don't know until you get to the end of the ramp if there is space or not and then have to reverse back up if none. The upstairs parking is expensive for what it is. It is a pleasant hotel overall but does not have the attention to detail that one would expect from a 5 star hotel.

Location was superb. Staff were very friendly and helpful, in particular, the doorman, G Rodrigues and the officer , Gomez, who dealt with our check -in. Evening entertainments were lovely. Food was good. Very helpful staff in room service . Happy to recommend and definitely visit again. As a negative fact, wish to say that the house-keeping staff should pay more attention to the kettles and irons that are provided to the guests.

I had a family room.( 1110). Quite spacious but housekeeping staff should pay more attention to the kettles and irons they provide. I had to ask the staff to change them. No bottles of water were provided and no milk sachets.. Temperatures in the sauna and the steam rooms were not up to the required temperature levels. No staff were around for any help. A suggestion, there should be a light for the big mirror near the second sliding door.

we upgraded our room to an ocean view suite which was magical. The view space and services was top notch. The location fantastic and in walking distance to all major Funchal Destinations. We appreciated that there was free parking although not a great lot, one was provided. There is also a paid lot that was fairly priced. It is a vast hotel. The breakfast, Resturant taverna and pub were convenient and provided delicious meals.

Our first room was a bit dated, the shower head and bath tub old but It was still a nice spacious room with stunning city view on a high floor so the city noise was minimal. The staff regardless was wonderful.

The hotel has a fabulous pool area overlooking the sea. The whole place is well-tended by staff. We were able to get an early check-in - reception rang us when the room was ready. Our room was spacious with a really comfy super king bed, plus sofa and I think we were given a bigger room than we had booked. The bathroom was huge with double sinks and separate shower and bath tub. There was a huge selection of food for all tastes at breakfast, including an omelette station. We were only there one night so didn't try the gym, etc.

It's a bit dated in terms of decor, but no big deal. The quality of the breakfast wasn't as high as we've had in other places - the coffee was poor and the fruit juice was weak. I didn't notice any provision of non dairy milks which is unusual these days. Staff at breakfast were struggling to keep up with replenishing crockery - either understaffed or not as well-managed as they could be.

Amazing, not touched, old architecture with the great understanding of comfort. I truly believe that a great designers who can preserve the old and inhale new elements in the building could make a place an unforgettable gem of the Funchal. Good lack. I personally believe that it was a great value for the money :)

The only bad experience was on the reception, when we were checking in. Since I ordered our stay through booking, the rude lady named stay in 5 stars hotel with pools and jacuzzi and several other facilities a “bed and breakfast” stay. That was unpleasant and rude. I was waiting for that young lady to leave the reception to talk to someone else. P.S. breakfast on the terrasse before 8 am would be a perfect thing too.

A very enjoyable stay at Pestana Carlton. Our view was amazing overlooking the sea. They offered a wide selection of fruit, pastries, breads, cheeses, cold meats for breakfast. The hot food was also delicious. There was a chef who cooked you an omlette of your choice each morning. We dined al fresco most mornings overlooking the sea. It was breathtaking. Finally, a huge thank you to the staff at this hotel. They were so kind and helpful. They went above and beyond for us. We had the most memorable stay at this hotel. We will be back. 😊

Everything was perfect,room was clean, we got room in the highest floor so view was amazing. Reception very helphul with all quastions. It was our honeymoon so we got champagne in room,and after long flight it was so deligtfull to sit in the balkon and absorb the view. The breakfast- most delicious we had in few years of staying in hotels. Pools very clean, there always a person to accomondate if you need and umbrella or anything else. To sum up,place in the city,reception,food was on the spot.

One minus,that they had very small free parking lot, and it was quite inconveinience to park there, as there downhill and very small spots.

Great hotel, resort, many pools, private beach, great room, balcony facing the ocean, small presents everyday on the bed, pub attached to the hotel, great lobby with live music everyday, great location- close to the centre of Funchal, many restaurants and coffee shops near the hotel just minutes walking.

They had a bath tub in the room and not shower. We didn’t like the food in the restaurants- it was pretty common and simple in breakfast and in dinner. It was nice but less than we expected from a 5 star hotel.
