A very charming hotel with extremely helpful and friendly staff that attended to our every need. Our room was spacious and featured a good-sized balcony overlooking the attractive gardens. The breakfasts had a good variety of both hot and cold dishes, and the a la carte evening meals were very tasty and reasonably priced. The indoor and outdoor pools were well-kept, and the spa facilities were a treat. We were grateful for the shuttle bus to the Marina on days that we preferred not to make the 20-minute walk down to the centre of Funchal. We would very happily stay at the Quintinha Sao Joao Hotel & Spa again next time we visit Funchal.

A Perfect Stay at Quintinha de São João – Truly Unforgettable We had the most incredible experience at Quintinha de São João during our recent stay in Madeira. From the moment we arrived, everything was perfect. The staff were genuinely warm, welcoming, and attentive – they made us feel completely at home. Our room was spacious and beautifully maintained, with a stunning balcony that looked out over the lush gardens and offered breathtaking views across Funchal. Every detail, from the peaceful surroundings to the thoughtful touches in the room, added to the overall sense of calm and comfort. This trip was especially meaningful as we were celebrating my retirement with family, and it couldn’t have been a more perfect setting. The atmosphere, the people, and the beauty of the hotel made it truly unforgettable – a celebration we’ll cherish forever. I would 100% recommend Quintinha de São João to anyone visiting Madeira. It’s a hidden gem with heart, and I already dream of returning one day.

Nothing to dislike

An outstanding experience! The whole personnel was professional and pleasant. Breakfast was nice, I liked how they had focused on the quality instead of the quantity. Everything in the hotel was very well thought. I definitely recommend you to try the spa - such a relaxing experience! Some have criticized it for being too small, but it also means personified service and tranquility. Our room was on the top floor, and we could enjoy the beautiful sunrises and sunsets and how they landed on the mountains from our balcony. Definitely my favourite moments from our trip.

I liked how the hotel has stayed true to the traditional decor, but some of the surfaces were still a bit shabby, and could use some renovation. It wasn't something too bothering, but if I had to make up something they could improve, that could be done rather easily. This might be an unpopular opinion, but the hotel, in my opinion, was designed and planned for adults, so it could easily label itself as an adults only-hotel.

I loved the location, the views were beautiful. And although up a hill, only a 10 minute walk to the harbour. The staff were absolutely fantastic. And If you don't want to or can't make it walking, they had a shuttle bus that ran monday-friday into town as well. Had food in the restaurant one night too and it was delicious, as was breakfast. There's even a games room for the event of rain!! Absolutely amazing holiday. :)

Nothing. It was all perfect.

The whole ambience was lovely, it had the feel of a high end hotel but with a much more personal feel. The room was spotless and much larger than we thought, the staff were excellent and couldn’t do enough for you. The food in the restaurant was very good and very reasonably priced.

The indoor pool was a little tired but perfectly useable, but I’m just picking at straws here. There was nothing to dislike about the place

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Good location, short walk into town ( steepish hill). Our room was comfortable. Hotel was very quiet, fully booked but hardly ever saw anyone else.

The spa had a very limited selection of massages available. The staff member we spoke to wasn't overly helpful. We didn't particularly like the food, dinner the first night wasn't great so we only had breakfast from then on. Coffee was undrinkable every morning. Cold buffet was Ok, not that extensive and no changes from day to day. We tried the cooked breakfast twice and again not impressed

Restaurant : we visited Sao Joao because an ex-colleague had recommended the Quinta. Throughout our stay, the level of empathy across the staff was exceptional. One night of our three nights, we ate in the restaurant. The delicious food was undoubtedly the best of the three evening meals that we experienced. It was presented with flair and the restaurant staff once again demonstrated real warmth.

All aspects of our stay were extremely good. I wish that we had had a drawer in our bathroom, as I had to leave all our toiletries spread about the surfaces. And a bin in the main room would have been nice.

This is a lovely traditional well-managed hotel on the outskirts of Funchal. The staff are delightful and helpful. The food was of good quality, though missing the dairy-free vegan basics. We asked for vegan options for dinner which the kitchen tried hard with but were not always satisfactory.

We were missing the basic dairy free alternatives (butter, yogurt, milk) which are available locally in the shops

Fabulous Team, always warm and friendly, it was great to be back .. loved the Poncha Workshop, it was good fun and enjoyed attending the all aboard welcome drinks evening and greeting the general manager.

I had been allocated a low level room, with no view, only trees! Happy to feedback that this was rectified by reception really quickly. Unable to use the spa for last two days due to maintenance. Both indoor and outdoor pools needed cleaning, had a lot of debris so did not use.

I wish to give them 100 not 10 ,we have met with love specially my baby ,early checkin ,perfect breakfast ,provided soft drink and water to the room , clean room with prett view and the people in reception are the heroes they saved our vacation and borrowed us a baby stroller until we receive ours and provide us with early breakfast in the room as we have early plan even our trip guide (not booked through the hotel) told us you choosed a lovely hotel, thank you dear
