Nice staff, clean, the common areas looked really cool (didn't really use them since I checked in late and checked out early the next day), would have like the location which is a bit outside of the city center, but...

... currently there's a road closure due to construction between the hostel and the city center (where the bus / train / ferry / tours go from) and the detour is a pain in the ass on foot with a heavy bag. Tip: If you come with the Intercity bus and the driver asks if someone wants to get off at Nelson Square / Sequoia Lodge: do that

I liked the theme, my daughter especially loved the front door as it was shaped like a coffin and the graveyard across the road. I booked our stay there as she is very much into that type of thing. It was central to everything as well.

Nothing really, it was great.

The family rooms with ensuite are ideal for a family of 4. Having a fridge and tea/coffee making facilities in the room was a really nice addition. The kids enjoyed the games (table tennis, pool and darts) and we all enjoyed the spa. The rooms are quiet with good bedding and heating. The shared kitchen facilities are basic but OK. The dining room and lounge are functional and the scones for breakfast included in the tariff are a bonus! And the location (right next to ferry check in) couldn't be better!

The shared kitchen, dining and lounge are a bit tired. They are functional, but a coat of paint in the communal spaces and a bit of a spruce up in the kitchen wouldn't go amiss.

Beds were comfy. Walking distance to Bluebridge (only a minute or two). I paid for the dorm room, so that's what I got - 5 roommates - but that is what I paid for so not going to complain about it here! Someone wet the whole bathroom floor which wasn't nice to go into but not the accomdations fault and lots of other bathrooms to go into anyway.

I guess more frequent checks on state of bathroom would be good, but they probably expect adults to be more responsible/tidy than some people seem to be- so not really the owners fault. And options for earlier breakfast would be good - something simple before 8 would be fine, wouldn't need to be the amazing home cooked scones, but some people do need to leave earlier so an option for this would help

We arrived off the late ferry and it was so easy to collect our key and find our room. Very impressed with the room and provisions. We had to giggle at the snoring coming through the wall from next door - glad we hadn't woken them with our late arrival. Morning scones in the communal kitchen were exceptional and thanks to whoever left the butter on the sharing shelf, make our scones extra delicious. Great location for arriving late on the ferry but next time we'll try and stay longer to enjoy all the facilities - the spa pool with view over the harbour looks Fab!!

The Tombstone, with a coffin-shaped door and by a cemetery, is super charming. It has a kind of tropical atmosphere with its lush foliage and sleeping cat. There are plenty of shared bathrooms and a hot tub with a view of the harbor. Gary, the manager, was pleasant and efficient and gave us a ride to the bus station for $10NZ. He also gave us a great tip for dinner, which was the Seumus Irish Pub, a short walk from the motel, where the food was wonderful and not at all the usual pub fare. I would have liked to stay in Picton longer than one night.

If you have a lot of heavy luggage, be aware there's a steep walk up a short hill.

The shared areas of this lodge are fantastic- there's tons of space from the outside seating to the kitchen to the living areas. There are plenty of bathrooms and they were clean. The room itself was great and the bed was comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful and let me store my bags during the day. It's a 10-15 minute walk to town and a 15 minute walk to the Interislander Ferry terminal.

The walk to town can get a bit tedious if you're going back and forth often. Plus it's up a steep hill (for just a couple minutes) so if you're lugging a heavy suitcase, be warned.

The whole facility was exceptionally clean. Rather impressed by that. The games room/area was excellent, albeit cold as it was set up outside on the verandah, BUT the fireplace was soooo toasty, and the lovely white cat was affectionate and well loved by my children. The location was awesome, so close to the Ferry. Happy to stay here again.

The sounds from the Port at night. This really can't be helped though. I personally didn't notice, but my daughter is a light sleeper and complained a little. Other than that, a great place. Happy to stay here again.

I recommend Tombstone MLB as it's a home away from home tucked away on a hill in a private garden setting. It's small, cozy & safe. There is enough parking available more than the other backpackers in town. Laundry facilities and washing line. A view of the ferry terminal. Spa bath and lawn chairs. It is a very beautiful outdoor dining setting. Easy walk to the ferry and train station. Beach & supermarket is within 10-15 minutes walk. Picton is a friendly town in New Zealand. I would return here in the future.

All the reviews are right. We had two family rooms at a great price. the two rooms slept 8 all together. Each room with ensuite.A lovely place with lots of facilities including a mini gym table tennis boardgames spa. many pretty outdoor places to sit and enjoy the view. Kitchen was the best at any backpackers we have been to - well equipped, clean and super functional. Entire place was well run, very clean and friendly. Loved the tombstone door and many sofas for relaxation.

some might find it a bit far from the main street without a car.
