As someone with moderate chronic asthma that’s triggered by various common airborne allergens, I’m always concerned about whether I’ll be able to breathe through the night when staying in a hotel. I messaged ahead letting them know this, especially since it’s a dog-friendly hotel, and they responded quickly & attentively, saying they’d do everything they could to minimise. The staff were kind & helped us out with check-in arrangements (we were there for a wedding, that started before check-in time, and finished after it!) - definitely recommend calling ahead if you’re in a similar situation. They actually made it so that our room was one that wasn’t booked/stayed in the night before, so that it was already ready without any extra arrangements the morning we arrived. This was such a relief for us because we had luggage that we couldn’t bring to the wedding! It was also incredibly helpful for my asthma because it meant an extra day of airing out from any previous guests, and I had very little trouble overnight compared to most of my hotel experiences. Additionally, the bed was *enormous*, I’ve never seen anything like it! A very comfortable night’s sleep. Thank you to all the staff, for making our stay as stress-free as possible ❤️
These aren’t complaints, only suggestions: The bathroom lighting would benefit from being less bright/white - or if there were an option for a small mirror light or similar? The shower could have done with a bit of fixing, as a lot of the water didn’t make it to the nozzles and was instead coming out of the connector to the hose. To be fair, it wasn’t something that bothered us enough to pester the staff about it, and we were only staying for one night so it wasn’t a problem for us. The water was still a good temperature and we had enough towels which were clean & fresh.

We stay here for a night or two (occassionally longer) three or four times a year because Halstead suits us well for visiting friends and family. It's an original tutor inn and has some of the original timber structural beams. The staff are always welcoming and very friendly and do their best to please. They're a good team. The hot breakfast is well cooked and satisfying. There are also cereals on offer. It's still quite a traditional kind of English pub, but it also has quite a good menu for lunch and dinner too. It's got a spacious garden where they serve food in the summer. It's good value for money.
Since we stay here quite a lot, we know what the place is like, so the following things are NOT a problem for US, but for some others they may be. Because of it's age, the bathrooms are not easy to maintain and there might be plumbing issues. The floors are not even and you may need to bend down to pass under some of the aforementioned beams. The stairs to the rooms are quite steep and of course there is no lift. However, there are rooms in the annex at the back that would not have accessibilty problems - we've never stayed in the annex.

The pub food was good value with excellent choice including children's menu, outside space meant that our large family gathering could minimise inconvenience to the pub staff or other guests. Location in the centre of town meant it was easy to pop out for essentials of necessary
Rooms are on the small size except the family rooms which are generous, but it is making the best of a 500 year old building. Steep steps mean that None of the rooms are suitable for any mobility impaired guests

A lovely old pub. Car park..good position on the edge of the high street with lovely walks and picturesque cottages and river there as well… secondary double glazing so rooms quiet… lovely hot water and comfy bed
Hardly any tea, coffee and milk or drinking water in the room… the food was below its usual standard, we have stayed 4 or 5 times before… the water system is noisy and the toilet chain did not flush very well..no bath mat so used one of the towels

The Bull inn is very unique, great decor, amazing rustic ceilings very country life feel to it, the staff were incredibly polite and able to understand my accent easily :) Ben the Manager, thank you, :) when I had a complaint about my room, he instantly helped me and moved me to another room, no animosity and had a total understanding of my requirements and that made the stay a little more comforting for me :) I will definitely book here again when visiting family:)
Room 19 was the only room I didn't like haha, this room is next to the water mains supply cupboard so it sounded like a washing machine on cycle all night haha it can be quite loud and keep you awake, that was literally my only issue was lack of sleep due to this noise lol,

This is a great place to stay. Located at the bottom of the town in Halstead, it has easy access to all the local shops, restaurants, supermarkets and cafes. The accommodation was very clean with the room serviced every day - bins emptied and clean towels always left. Compact room but had everything we needed - television, tea and coffee making facilities, iron and ironing board, fan, storage facilities and a hairdryer. Good sized shower room. The choice at breakfast was very good - you can choose from either continental or Full English (or both if you're feeling hungry!). A good choice of food on the evening menu. Always a table available in the evenings. I can recommend the steak night on a Thursday evening. All the staff were very welcoming, helpful and friendly. The light stopped working in our bathroom but was checked and repaired within minutes. The public areas are also very clean and well kept. A good sized car park for off road parking. No noise heard at night. Very reasonable price for a 4-night stay including breakfast. I have already booked to return in October!
The only disappointment was no bacon at breakfast on the first morning and the first 2 choices we selected from the menu on the first evening weren't available. No other issues at all.

Breakfast was exceptional which was included in the price. The room was adequate for the price, although when I booked asked for a double bed when i got there it was two single which the friendly receptionist change straight away.
Cannot think of anything I disliked. Only critism there could have been more tea and coffee in the room also my partner who is plumber found out water into the room was from a tank but we were giving water from mains in a jug.

Decent breakfast, quirky pub, friendly staff and quite cheap
Furniture very tired, kept bumping my head on the low door frames and low beams. Not much selection for the continental breakfast. No toaster, very small hot water urn, which wasn’t filled so there wasn’t enough for everyone at breakfast time. Small shower cubicle and constant noise of running water in the room. Needs another method to block out the light from the corridor. Steep stairs to the bedrooms and creaking flooring.

central location with lots of amenities friendly and helpful staff a building with some history
Little bit dated furniture and some fixtures not finished which just let the property down ie bathroom flooring, repairs around bath, grouting in bathroom needed a deep clean

We liked the central position of the hotel in Halstead as we could walk to visit our friends from there. The room was really quaint - we were particularly fascinated by the old sloping floor. The breakfast was very good and served promptly by pleasant and friendly staff. It was far less noisy than we had been expecting.
The shower was a bit cramped for my husband but fine for me.
