A very stylish oasis of a hideaway not too far from the old town crowd that still retains the Japanese charm and sense of peace within the accommodation and its surrounds. We enjoyed the intricate 4-course dinner and had long group conversations over a bottle of good wine in a beautiful common space with a fireplace. The ample spaced shared bathrooms are a real treat after a long day in town. We slept very well on the comfortable beds and the loaned PJs were a dream during our 2-night stay. It was truly one of the more enjoyable stays we experienced during our trip around the gorgeous Gifu prefecture. Thank you for your hospitality.

What an exquisite place. We spent two blissful nights here and from start to finish felt coddled and cared for by the lovely, gracious family who own and run the auberge. Our room was spotlessly clean and comfortable, with the highest quality bedding and softest pyjamas imaginable (I had to buy some to take home!). The food was absolutely top-notch, five-star by any rating, as good as anywhere in the world (I’m talking NYC, London, Paris). The wine pairings were delicious, unusual, well thought through (and natural). The design was beautiful, clean, understated and very very cool with lots of locally crafted furniture. The service was attentive and kind, and we had everything we needed provided for us. Lastly the private onsen was a delight and always available when we wanted it. What a lovely, intimate hideaway—on the outskirts of Takayama, shuttle from and to station provided, making it very easy. Thank you Toshi and Keiko and family—this was an unforgettable stay.
We loved every minute.

Away from the town, so free from disturbances in amongst the trees (but not entirely isolated - there are neighbours!) Oh, the onsen - shared but for private use with a window into the woods, but don't fall asleep in there, you'll upset the other residents! Stayed for dinner with paired wine - just fantastic...great food and drink, entertained by our amiable host. Free transfers around the neighbourhood/town, although we walked back from town via the Museum of Old Buildings and the winding forest road (including a stop at the microbrewery). Brilliant.
We only stayed 2 nights...

This is an immaculate and welcoming quiet refuge in the mountains. I came here to write and relax in the midst of a longer trip and I could not have asked for a more comfortable place. My room was beautiful in a spare, clean way. I had a view of the snowy mountains next to my desk. The baths were so nicely set up--and private. But the highlights were the service (just amazing--warm, without ever being intrusive) and the food. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, creative, and generous. The wine pairings in particular were inventive and often surprising. This really is a gem.

The meals were out of this world delicious. Highly recommend eating here during your stay. The whole property was remodeled in 2022 and they did a fantastic job from the lighting on your dining table to the use of plants throughout the common areas. Very comfortable western beds with rooms facing the trees and garden area making it extremely peaceful and quiet. The setting in the two private baths was very relaxing with a huge picture window looking out over the forest. Each room also has its own sink and toilet. A two minute walk away is a lovely park where you can venture up the wooden staircase into a huge preserve with lakes and trails. The riverfront morning market in Takayama is fun as well with wonderful shopping for unique gifts on the side streets as well. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Awesome stay.

We were conflicted about where to stay during our first visit to Takayama. While it might be tempting to stay close to the city center, we can't recommend seizing the opportunity to retreat to this cozy, special place after a long day of exploring. Auberge Hidanomori is a labor of love operated by a lovely, passionate couple, and it shows. Every detail from the thoughtful and minimalistic yet charming design, to the quality and creativity of the food was carefully considered and created an environment of pure bliss. We will be thinking about the incredible meal that Chef and Owner created for a long time to come. We highly recommend paying for at least one dinner while you stay here. Multiple courses that complemented and represented the Hida region with French and Italian fusion. Chef Keiko is very passionate about wine and has over 300 natural wines in his collection that he will be happy to pair with each course of dinner. What a fun culinary adventure! Complimentary breakfast was also coursed, delicious, fresh and hearty! The shuttle service made it so convenient to get to and from town and they accommodate your schedule. Rooms are simple, clean and relaxing. Don't be intimidated by the shared showers. It may be an inconvenience to some but they include onsen-style baths that feel like your own personal spa. We loved our stay and would recommend to anyone seeking a unique, zen experience run by a family that has devoted their lives to the comfort of their guests!
Nothing. Everything was great.

I have no words other than - wow. Beautiful place in the woods, minimalist interior, impeccable. It’s all about the small details! The shuttle service to and from the stay was also super helpful. We had dinner two nights in a row, the first night with the wine pairing. We had drinks we never had in our lives (we ended up buying a couple of bottles) and tasted one of the best meals we have ever had. The second night they remembered our favorite drinks and in general were so attentive. I have nothing but good words to say about this place and I’d recommend staying there to anyone coming to Takayama.

This property is owned by two chefs. The food was beyond excellent. In addition, although it was 15 minutes outside of the main part of the town, they graciously drove us back and forth. In addition, you can choose to add on their chefs menu for dinner and /or the wine tasting. Both were fabulous-comparable to a NY restaurant quality at 1/3 the price. The ambience here is zen. The rooms are amazing. The service is superb. They have two small private baths which were lovely and adequate. This was the highlight of our trip to Japan by far! Do it!

Amazing property, very thoughtfully designed and cozy. Although it is a little far from the train station, the free shuttles were perfect and always available to bring us back and forth when we needed them. The breakfast and dinner were unforgettable. The wine pairing with dinner was one of our favorite experiences in our entire 5 week trip in Japan. We never had to wait to use the shared shower/bath either. The family running this place are incredibly kind. I would 100% recommend this property, thank you so much for an amazing stay!

We loved our time at Auberge Hidanomori. The decor is beautiful and in a lovely location in the outskirts of Takayama. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who gave us recommendations for some local walks and provided a free shuttle to/from town. We would definitely recommend booking in for dinner - the food was incredible and the best that we had during our trip to Japan. We hope that we will be back again some day - thank you!
Nothing, it was perfect.
