Nice location in the small village of Gilling. On site parking and friendly checking in staff. Our room was nice, in the main building, quality furnishings. Kettle provided with nice teas and coffees etc, only downside no fridge. Bathroom good, hot shower. I thought the room might have been a bit noisy at night, as it it is above the public bar, however all was good. We ate in the hotel both the nights we stayed. Food is a little pricey, main dishes around £19 to £28, however the food is good quality and felt it was worth the extra cost. Top marks for choice of 4 real ales, including Theaksons, Black sheep and Bradfield brewery. Also to note, breakfasts were good too. Overall a pleasant stay, all staff helpful and polite, would return in the future.
Nothing all good.

The staff were lovely, very welcoming. The atmosphere in the bar, restaurant and outside seating was very relaxing. The pub is a lovely building and the conservatory is exceptional, real quality. The evening meal was exceptional, the food was delicious and head and shoulders above a top hotel in Harrogate ( previous stay).
The generator below by room was loud and on and off all night. difficult to sleep. Ask NOT to be out in room 6. Small thing though. Room also needs a full length mirror.

Really nicely appointed rooms with so many lovely touches. Breakfast had a very good choice and served in a lovely light filled dining room. Really nice pub in an idyllic Yorkshire village.
We were disappointed that we weren't able to have our evening meal in the restaurant as it wasn't serving food on Sunday night and Monday evening (public holiday). These were the two nights we were staying. We didn't realise this at the time of booking, just assumed the restaurant would be open (at least one of the nights). We had to drive to Helmsley/another local village to find pubs serving evening meals. Not so restful for the driver. We would definitely go back though, but check this time that the restaurant is open (the menu looked great!)

On arrival extremely happy . Very friendly , helpful staff. Wonderful in every way. Every facility including wonderful bath robes. Great attention to detail. Excellent and very varied food.A charming front bedroom. BUT
It was impossible to sleep. I presume there was some form Of cooling generator for the beer cellar directly under the window working at full blast until 12 midnight. It then seemed to have a slightly lower output but still heard. There were earplugs in the room but they didn’t make a difference. Such a shame. A perfect place to stay but impossible to return if unable to sleep.

Friendly staff. Large room and bathroom. Parking. Evening meal was excellent as was the breakfast omelette.
Really breakfast was a minor issue and would not prevent us returning as everything else was very good but I think the breakfast could be improved. Bacon overcooked and had become solid. Continental breakfast poor. Lacked much choice of fruit, no cheeses ( not even cheese triangles), or meat, no choice of breads or pastries. I am intolerant to eggs so am dependent on the Continental breakfast range and found this poor in the choices offered. My husband found the pillows uncomfortable.

The Fairfax Arms was a lovely pub with great restaurant and friendly service. The room was comfortable with a good shower and bath, chocolates and bathrobe’s. There was an exceptional cooked breakfast included in our rate which was good value for money.
We were in room 6 which looked over the front area of the pub. While we slept well the large fridge cooling generator went all night and was pretty annoying (there are earplugs supplied in the room which we don’t like to use). The room had a sloping floor which wasn’t really an issue, just a bit quirky.

A lovely inn in the Yorkshire countryside. The facilities were very good, the room clean and comfortable if a bit on the small side. All the little extras like dressing gowns, water, eye masks etc. were most welcome.
Unfortunately there was no hot water as the boiler had just broken down but the staff were very apologetic and we moved room on the second night to a room with hot water. This was just one of those things that happens and the boiler was being fixed the next week. (The verbally promised refund for one night has not arrived yet.)

This was our second stay and again it didn’t disappoint. All the staff we encountered were welcoming and friendly. We had an evening meal which was sensational and breakfast was exceptional. They are more than generous with the heating, once inside the main building and once outside, both rooms we’ve stayed in have been toasty warm. Although we didn’t use them a good selection of toiletries are provided. Tea and coffee facilities were a little treat with added extra of hot chocolate and some lovely biscuits. Its location in relation to castle Howard where we were visiting after our stay is simply perfect. We intend to make this an annual trip!
There’s nothing to dislike!

January 2025
Very welcoming, well appointed room, friendly staff. Excellent Dinner, very generous portions.
The only criticism is that it was early January with snow on the ground and minus 4 overnight. Bedding consisted of a rather thin duvet only. There was no bedspread or blanket available. When I asked they looked surprised but did allow me to take another duvet from adjoining empty room which was helpful. Just an observation really as I find this a lot nowadays but some of us like to sleep with no heating, window open and good warm bedding. In winter this should be provided.

Beautiful country pub, in a lovely little village
Someone had left two dogs on their own, they cried and howled until 3.15am, when the owners finally came home. The noise was so bad that I couldn’t sleep, neither could some of the other guests. I was asked my a lady who was staying in the courtyard if I would press the buzzer at the top of the stairs, which is there to enable guests to contact a member of staff if there is a problem. However this didn’t seem to be connected to anywhere. I did speak to staff the following morning about the dogs, they said that unfortunately that if guests chose to leave dogs in the property there wasn’t anything they could do. They were very apologetic and offered me a box of chocolates.
