The location it is close to everything. It is across the Mondego River. Breakfast is included with the hotel stay, I love the vintage exterior and interior design of the hotel. You feel like you stepped back in time. The elevator is what you see in the classic movies. I love it!

There was an issue with the a/c. When I first checked in it was working fine but in the middle of the night it suddenly turned off automatically and didn't turned back on. I have to open the window balcony to get air into the room. But it was not bad at all since the air was cooler than with the AC on. The next day I told the front desk of the problem. When I got back to my room after exploring the city, I turned on the AC but the same problem occurred. So I opened the window again. I did not make a fuss out of it because I was checking out the next day. The cool breeze was better than the AC. Overall, I will stay here again.

the location was brilliant - very central , easy to find , great access to where we wanted to go and eating out options Staff were amazing - a particular female on reception provided amazing local knowledge in a cheerful and respectful manner - after arriving late Sunday afternoon we needed good advice and she was brilliant .- routes to tour meeting points /. places to eat. /. parking to be welcomed with a food treat and chilled sparkling was very touching and made us feel so welcome Breakfast was all that we needed - nothing over-fancy - but plenty and tasty

my partner found the bed was over-firm / hard - contributing to a less than perfect sleep

This is an old and classic hotel in an excellent location. Our room had a view to the river which was a plus, we enjoyed the view in the morning and also at night, so beautiful. You have many attractions walking distance and also to get a taxi or a bus to go to the University. This is a classic hotel situated in an excellent location. Our room offered a beautiful view of the river, which we enjoyed both in the morning and at night. There are many attractions within walking distance, and it's easy to find a taxi or bus to the university.

We asked for an early check in and we didn´t get it. The hotel doesn´t seem to be full so I believe it was only because that is her policy and they are not flexible at all. I understand when the hotel is full during vacation time but this was not the case. Too bad. We were waiting about an hour in the reception with no air condition there and nothing to drink. We requested an early check-in but were denied. The hotel doesn’t appear to be fully booked, so I believe this decision was purely based on their inflexible policy. I understand if the hotel is full during peak vacation times, but that wasn’t the case here. Unfortunately, we had to wait about an hour in the reception area, which had no air conditioning and no refreshments available.

Gorgeous outside & inside; very nice breakfast; responsive desk staff; amazing lack of street noise up on the 2nd floor; cool view even without a proper "view." (We had initially been put in a twin room, and we were accommodated when we requested a double instead, with apologies for the "view out the back" - but we loved looking up the hill and seeing the swifts flying around in front of us.)

I found the mattress and pillows to be not firm enough for my liking, but this is pretty typical with older hotels and not a deal-breaker for me.

I had a choice between the Astoria and a newly refurbished apartment. I chose the Astoria and I’m very glad I did. The art deco building is beautiful and unchanged for decades. I know opinions will be divided and it is very tired ( completely exhausted !! ) but somehow that didn’t matter at all . In the U.K. the interior ( especially the ground floor ), as well as the exterior would, I believe, be protected by Grade 2 listing status. The dining room is just fabulous and I could picture people there attending balls etc 70/80 years ago with the band playing and everyone in their finery. Plumbing dodgy, always a slight relief when the lift managed to get you where you wanted to go, not the quietest but location is fantastic and the staff in their formal black and white were a joy ( especially given the undoubted moans that they must receive from guests who expect modern facilities )

I really embraced the “tiredness” so nothing really to dislike

The best location in Coimbra. We had a riverside room and the view was beautiful ! The room was well appointed, clean, complete with nice , old furniture with a big bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. The whole hotel has that rare old world charm. The breakfast was excellent and aplenty. The front desk staff were very courteous and helpful. The places to visit were all within walkable distance. The stay in Hotel Astoria made our stay in Coimbra memorable.

Wish the television set were mounted on the wall . That would have kept the dressing table clear.

Location: great. Right next to the main street with shops, restaurants and such. A great walk to the famous Coimbra university. You can take a bus from the train station and it's a short 5 min walking distance. Room: Beautiful room - high ceiling, balcony with the view of the river and the main street. Still quiet when the window is closed; Breakfast: Eggs, caffe, breads/crossoint, pastries, fresh fruit. Very good espresso. Had tabasco sauce and black pepper. Other: the lounge downstairs is nice with the old-world decor and lighting although the sofa covers are falling apart. If visiting Coimbra again, I would stay here (but preferably in a different room due to the bathroom layout, see the negatives).

Bathroom: The room we got (Last room to the right on 2nd floor) has a strange bathroom. The toilet and sink are so close that when you're seated on the toilet, you can literally 4 inches from the sink. You can really brush your teeth. Clearly, not enough clearance there. While both my wife and I are very slim, this could be a meaningful issue for someone with a larger frame. In an otherwise a very nice hotel, the bathroom in this particular room is questionably designed.

Staying at this hotel was truly a memorable experience, like stepping back in time. I felt as if I were in an Agatha Christie novel! The hotel was built and furnished in the 1930s and has retained much of its original character since then. While it is a bit worn around the edges, that only adds to its unique charm. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the bed linen was impeccably white. Overall, my stay was very positive and atmospheric.

The only downside was the breakfast – quite modest in both variety and quality.

We were fortunate to have the absolute best room of the hotel. Top floor at the end at the curvature of the building. If you could not have this one, then the ones at the lower 2 floors. Also great location at the flatter areas and 15 yards to the beautiful walking street of restaurants and charm of old architecture. Also an absolute must to arrange a tour of one of the oldest Universities in Europe and its equally astounding library.

All was perfect for us. It is an old hotel built in early 1900's and retained all the old charm. Some would want more new modern luxurious hotels, but we choose character and charm over all of those. This had it in spades.

Faded art deco hotel in a great location, at the foot of the main pedestrian street separating the lower and upper town. The hotel has a lot of charm. Very nice staff, breakfast was good, room service for extra 5 euros. We could leave our luggage the day of checkout at no extra cost, which, given the heat and the steep climbing, was a life saver. Very good restaurant with a big but intimate terrace right behind the hotel (not part of the hotel, but handy if you don't feel like walking any further).A few minutes walk from the train station.

Liked everything, but the hotel could be so much more with a careful and tasteful renovation. Some of the common areas could be brought back to life with a bit of imagination. But still very atmospheric.
