Bar, lounge, and restaurant were very period and in keeping with the rest of the building. Nice garden area. Despite being swamped with guests (many ignoring their booking time and/or the "please wait to be seated sign") Maja and Tina (the two staff managing the breakfast sitting on Sun 3/8) did an absolutely brilliant job. Both kept calm in challenging circumstances and although we had to wait a while for our table for four, we were served tea while we waited, offered two tables for two (more on that later), regularly updated, and seated at a table for four as quickly as possible, Attentive without being intrusive, Maja and Tina turned what could have been a negative experience into a positive one - both were absolutely first class all round
Having booked the restaurant for dinner a week in advance it was disappointing to find the table not set and a number of items "sold out" when we sat for dinner at 7pm. Although there is a sign stating wait to be seated, many guests just walk in and sit where they like. As a consequence two tables for 4 persons where utilised by couples and tables for two left empty resulting in our party of four having to wait 15mins for a Breakfast that was booked at 9.10am. Bar closed for residents at 10.20pm.

This hotel is full of character. If like me, you’ve got absolutely bored with corporate business hotels, then the Saracen’s Head hotel is a revelation. It’s a hotel that is full of charm and idiosyncrasies, although if you want everything to be clinical and perfect and instantly forgotten, then it’s not the hotel for you. It’s in a beautiful building with a delightful courtyard at the back graced by colourful flower baskets. It’s easy to find, and there is a huge car park at the back which is free. Located right in the middle of the lovely old town of Southwell and about five minutes walk from the magnificent Minster. There is a cheerful bar at the side. It’s not overstaffed , so the lunchtime kitchen closes at 2pm and you have to ring the bell for if you want a drink, but both the bar staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very good, served by a delightful lady in the magnificent assembly room. The experience was much enlivened by the wonderful hotel receptionist, who is a most entertaining character, occasionally coming in and asking us questions like “can you hear it?“ And “I need to twiddle with my buttons, and I’m having dreadful time with my knobs! “ (referring to the piped music system). At 9 am, a whole series of clocks started chiming downstairs – there must’ve been about 12 of them. It was hilarious; like being in a comedy sitcom. We loved every minute and would definitely come back!
The bathroom was a bit tired with a cracked sink and the room was very hot because there is no air-conditioning. I will bring a portable fan next time.

Building is listed and is very nice. No lift, so not easy for anyone with mobility issus as lots of stairs. Room was spacious, clean and shower was good. Breakfast was great with a good choice of things to eat. Only bug bear was that the cooked breakfast was brought out within 5 minutes while I was still eating my cereal. Staff were great, particularly the lady at breakfast who couldn't do more to help. Car parking is plentiful and easy to arrange.
I understand that it is a listed building but there are drawbacks to that. No socket near the bed so need extension lead if you want to plug anything in. Door was very stiff to open, could do with easing. Could have done with more milk. Needs coasters in room as all polished wood so cannot put cup down anywhere. Could do with a couple of glasses for water, juice or to rinse mouth out. Definitely need to supply fans in the rooms as it was sweltering hot. Bar is expensive.

Outside the front and rear seating area are fabulous plants that make you feel they really care for the place. Inside there are lots of period features antiques and oil paintings. It really gives a sense of quality. The staff in every department were friendly and helpful. Comfy beds, spacious bedroom, the toilet flush was weak as a kitten but I forget to mention it…I’m sure it would have been sorted pronto because reception was super efficient. Breakfast was quality and served in a beautiful room with chining clocks pipping away, we really felt like this was an authentic gem befitting the beautiful village it’s situated in.

29 years ago we got married in Southwell Minster and had our wedding reception at the Saracens Head. We were revisiting old memories which didn't disappoint. Lovely old fashioned building with character and history. One slight concern was the fact the bar had closed early so we had to find an alternative establishment, which wasn't difficult however. Probably a sign of the times due to limited staffing. Despite this very slight hiccup, I highly recommend and will perhaps revisit next year for our 30th. Thank you everyone.

Car parking with camera supervision was very good. The room was very comfortable and the members of staff were excellent. The shower and bathroom were great. The hotel was well located for access to the Minster, pubs & restaurants. There was plenty of choice for breakfast and the coffee was good and plentiful. As the hotel did not serve food on a Sunday evening we were offered the option of providing us with plates, cutlery, etc. if we wanted to order a takeaway. We went out instead and after trying a couple of pubs, who were also not serving food on Sunday, found a superb Indian restaurant called Lasani on Church St. Best Indian meal ever and we've had a few.
A sign on the wall at the entrance to the car park driveway would have been helpful. We drove through the gateway onto some wasteland behind the church by mistake. Electrical sockets on the wall behind the beds would have been useful for our mini fans (it was a very warm weekend).

This hotel is itself a fabulous piece of unspoiled history - cosy and comfortable. Check out the fascinating displays of its past. It is an ancient building - twisty staircases, low doorways and uneven floors are part of the charm. Modern facilities don't distract from the ancient structure. Good parking Extremely convenient for a wander around Southwell - great shops and amazing Minster.
Many of the power points in the room didn't accommodate normal plugs. Couldn't get near any mirrors with the hairdryer provided. Bar opening hours not as shown in booking.com or on website - not a temporary situation.

Ideal location as going to evening horse racing at Southwell track then going onto Maret Raen the next day. Good hearty breakfast. Cheery "Good morning" from resident guest. Would return again.
The way into the car park is hard to find if you don't know the way in......I had to park car the away from hotel and walk back. Go inside and ask directions. That's the way it is unfortunately. Along one way High Street pass Post Office . At end of one way to left in narrow road pass school in large car park. Give your car number or you will be charged. The pub part was closed at 9.00 when I returned from racing

Loved that the hotel was central to all amenities. Really olde worlde and quaint. Staff very incredibly helpful and friendly The room Was very spacious with all the facilities we would need. Lovely tea and coffee tray. The bathroom was a good size with an amazingly large shower.
Our son and daughter in law were staying in a different wing and they found it a bit noisy. Guests were loud at times, an extractor fan had been left on all night and there was a lot of creaking of floorboards from upstairs.

Very relaxed and friendly for our dogs with a nice walk beside the primary school which we would have explored further if the weather had been more clement. The breakfast was excellent and we loved the clocks.
It is wonderful that the hotel has electric car chargers on site - a real bonus - but the information on the charging point is out of date and without help from the hotel staff I would never have managed to charge my car. The App identity needs a label over it to give the correct App name. Directions to the car park could be better both on the sign board and on the website.
